The Exorcist Episode 7: Can the Exorcists save Andy?
We start the episode with Marcus and Tomas performing an exorcism on a tied down Andy.
This episode is seen from Andy’s point of view. We see the events that led up to Nikki’s death and the aftermath.
The day Nikki died
We see Nikki’s suicide three different times in this episode. Once, the way it really happened… another where he almost saves her and the third time he basically forgoes the children and saves her. Bringing us to the theme of the episode.
“Help me”
Throughout this episode we explore the downfall of depression. We learn that Nikki brought Verity home not only to help Verity, but to help herself.
We hear Andy say “Help Me” multiple times within the show. The two words that he never “heard” from Nikki, but the two words he thinks she was trying to show him.
The second time Andy relives Nikki’s suicide, he also sees the kids standing there saying “I’m glad she’s dead.” This seems to be us not only seeing Andy’s pain, but Nikki’s as well. She seems to feel that she was being forgotten for the children and that they hate her for the depression.
One way we clearly see this is right after a fight Verity has with Nikki. Verity tells her that she isn’t her real mother, and that she shouldn’t be lecturing her because she ‘sits in the bathroom, takes pills and cries everyday.’ We see Verity storm out – but Andy, who still has his own will, knows that’s not how it ended. Andy heads upstairs where we see Nikki holding a very visibly shaken and upset Verity.
This scene in itself, though being the demon trying to manipulate Andy, also shows us the pain Nikki is feeling as well. Andy’s pain is obvious too.
In all of the powerful scenes – one sticks out: Verity asks Andy if Nikki was sad and he replies “depression is much more complicated than that.” This statement should be posted in every doctors office in the country.
As someone who suffers from depression and has a mother who does as well, this episode really hit home. I’ve never experienced anyone trying or succeeding in taking their own life, but I could relate to the inner struggles that Nikki and Andy were facing.
This brings us back to Andy and how he never asks for help. Not wanting to look weak in front of the kids after Nikki’s death, he falls into the same pattern as Nikki. Never seeking help. His guilt of not seeing her pain, and his wanting to protect his kids, caused him to spiral within his own mind.
Focus was kept…
On Andy and his inner struggles. We saw what the demon was doing and the stages leading up to the full possession. Though we all wanted to find out how Mouse knew Marcus and what her and Father Bennett were up to, it was important for us to see why and how Andy ended up so far gone.
In two weeks…
We shall see where this exorcism goes and hopefully they are able to save Andy and his family.
