Empire – Slave to Memory

Vengeance is mine

Diana Dubois’ plan is fully implemented and the Lyons have been caged.  Andre has gone mad due to overdosing.  Detective Rose is literally a figment of his imagination.  Jamal fell in love with a devil named Warren. Bella Lyon is now being raised by Anika Lyon and Angelo DuBois (Taye Diggs).

However, you can never keep a Lyon down.  It is extremely foolish of Diana DuBois to believe she doesn’t have to worry about retaliation.  So many smart moves and then she makes what I call a foolish decision to have a philanthropic ball to showcase her families’ achievements.  Come on!  This is the perfect set up for Lucious and Cookie to bring down their wrath in a public setting.

The Lyon Ball

Putting their revenge into play, I thoroughly enjoyed watching Cookie and Lucious Tango in the middle of the

Guest star Phylicia Rashad in EMPIRE on FOX CR: Chuck Hodes/FOX

Captain’s Ball as Diana DuBois looked on cringing.  I admit I was smiling ear to ear as I tapped my feet.  The timely beating of Angelo and the prompt arrival at the ball are all a part of the Lyon takedown.  How dare Diana have a shocked look on her face. Did you really think you would mess with Cookie’s children and not have repercussions?  Perhaps Diana Dubois is naïve to think she’d won?

Wait…Don’t Shoot

Did we really think Angelo was going to shoot Warren? I didn’t – so hats off to the writers for an unexpected move.  The gun struggle between Jamal and Angelo was not as believable.  Losing a Lyon son in the mid-season finale?  I don’t think so.  It is unfortunate to see Angelo Dubois (Taye Diggs) leave the series.  Let’s talk about why Jamal felt the need to call the police and not just leave?  This man caused irreparable damage to his family why show sympathy. Leave him on the floor and run.

Deadly Confessions

Trai Byers in the “Slave to Memory” fall finale episode of EMPIRE CR: Chuck Hodes/FOX

I guess I’ll blame Andre Lyon, confessing to Lucious that he tried to kill him, on the drugs in his system. One-minute Andre confesses to attempted murder, the next he’s hallucinating about the imaginary Detective Rose.  I found this little trite and confusing.   The confession seemed forced and not part of his hallucinations.

One of the biggest shocks of tonight’s episode, (besides Becky’s potential pregnancy scare) OMG!  Claudia, the therapist makes a triumphant return and kidnaps Lucious from the hospital. Chaining him up in cabin reminded me of the movie Saw.  I was waiting for the mechanical voice “Do you want to play a game?”

Overall the midseason finale did have some unexpected surprises and few twist that did make me smile and cringe.   Packed with mobster style comebacks and high society powerhouses this episode ended the Dubois takedown of the Lyon empire.

I look forward to the return of Empire on FOX in the Spring of 2018.

After watching this episode I’m left with three questions

  1. How will Cookie find kidnapped Lucious
  2. Will Shine try to kill Andre once he finds out Lucious knows about the attempted murder
  3. Does Jamal go to jail for Angelo Dubois murder
