Designated Survivor – Equilibrium

Equilibrium, a state in which opposing forces or influences are balanced. President Kirkman is embroiled in trade import talks with the country of Mexico. Everything stalls when a life is taken

Trucker’s vs Trade agreement

A life is taken in the midst of trade import talks with Mexico. Citizens on both sides of the border (US and Mexico) create a blockade. Uproar ensues and negotiations stall.  President Kirkman tries to get out in front of the problem but fails. A big rig blockade of truckers has prevented border entry for all vehicles. Tensions are rising at all border crossing stations.

The actions of Jose Menez (Alejandro Ampudia) sparks a domestic incident.  He’s killed attempting to drive into a truck blockade. Chaos erupts as bullets fly everywhere. The Investigation into the shooting reveals it is an American weapon that killed Mr. Menez.

Trade talks halt and the focus turns to the murder of Mr. Menez. Initially, I didn’t agree with the rash act of Mr. Menez. This caused children to lose their father and a wife to become a widow. Trying to salvage the deal, President Kirkman goes on the hunt for solution.

Ask me the question

FBI agent Hannah Wells discovers damaging evidence.  The information implicates  First lady Kirkman’s own mother, Eva Booker(Bonnie Bedelia) in a Federal offense.  It appears the terrorist Patrick Lloyd, had intentions to destroy the reputation of President Kirkman even in death. After all, he did want the FBI to find the documents incriminating mother-in-law Eva.

“Designated Survivor,” (ABC/Ben Mark Holzberg)

John Forstell, FBI director discovers there is more to Eva’s involvement than originally thought. He lays out the circumstantial evidence to Hannah and begins to investigate. This could turn into a major scandal for the White House.  First Lady Kirkman confronts her mother, who reveals she did illicit a bribe from Eric little.

When committing a crime, you think your reasons are justified. Just think about it for a moment. If you could potentially save a loved one with an organ transplant. What would you do to make that happen? Would you break the law to move them up on the donor list? Mother –In-law Eva did. Is she a bad person? The only problem with this justification is the chain reaction it causes.

What happens to individuals taken off the organ transplant list?  Suspiciously, Eric Little, the individual who was bribed, is now dead and Alex Kirkman’s mother isn’t. Who killed Eric little? Did the White House try to limit the president’s mother-in-law’s involvement?

Dinner with a friend

President Kirkman is very intuitive when dealing with the American people. Discovering Orantes (Ruben Garfias) direct involvement with the truck blockade and the cause behind the subsequent death of Jose Menez. He finds a way to salvage part of the trade agreement.  President Kirkman meets with Dax Minter (Chris Butler) entrepreneur of electric car and saves the trade import agreement. Both sides are making money and producing electric cars at automated plants.

Not a permanent solution but it will buy much needed time. This resolution seems to have fallen into President Kirkman’s lap. I wanted a little more struggle between the White House and Mexico. The episode resolved this issue too quickly for my liking. It’s missing the thrill of the chase with twist and turns.

After watching this episode, I’m left with three questions:

1. How will the President protect his Mother-in-Law Eva from Federal Charges
2. Will First lady Alex Kirkman share her mother’s confession with the FBI
3. What other evidence did terrorist Patrick Lloyd leave behind
