The new series stars Sarah Wayne Callies and draws inspiration from the book of the same name written by Bruce Feiler about his own experience. Feiler shares the concept of a “council of dads” that he hand-picked to participate in a paternal role for his children had he not survived his cancer.

The new NBC series tells a similar story with the Perry family. Husband Scott Perry is diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer. Scott decides to select a “council of dads” to be there for his family if he does not survive. It is an inspiring story of love and community that Phelan gushes about in the Instagram live with fans. Find out what we learned.

Connecting with fans

Tony is thrilled with the idea of “connecting with fans” and “having a dialogue with the audience”. This is an aspect of social media that he seems to really appreciates as a series creator. Speaking of social media, several Council of Dads cast members also joined the Instagram live session asking questions and saying hello. Clive Standen, Thalia Tran, Lindsey Blackwell and Blue Chapman all made an “appearance”.

Getting some scoop

Phelan also revealed two additional cast members that have signed on for the show. Hilarie Burton and David Walton have joined the cast of Council of Dads. Tony has worked previously with Burton on Grey’s Anatomy. The showrunner used words like “excitement” and “romance” to describe the story line associated with Burton and Walton.

Tony sounded very pumped about the season finale episode. He also revealed that there is “a central mystery” throughout the season.

Savannah’s hospitality

Phelan shared how wonderfully hospitable the locals in Savannah have been during filming. He said that they are very excited about the show and have generously shared their homes and businesses for production. One such establishment is The Original Crab Shack. which has posted on Twitter about being part of the show.

Timeline

A fan inquired about the time structure on the new series. Tony revealed that the pilot episode takes place over the course of about one year. Future episodes cover shorter time periods and may also jump ahead in time.
