Cobra Kai Season 2 Review
Season 1 of Cobra Kai was so shockingly good – I couldn’t wait for the release of it’s second season. It’s here, and I feel compelled to share my thoughts on the show. No mercy, right? (Don’t worry – no spoilers!)
The Truth
Honestly, last year, when I found out they were making the series – I had low expectations. I thought it might be silly and fun – one of those “mindless” type of TV shows you can just sit back and enjoy.
I was wrong.
Season one was fantastic. Blew me away. Could a second season do the same – or was it all just an anomaly?
Reaction
Season two was just as good – if not a bit better. The stories become more complicated in this new season – and there’s things you don’t expect to have happen. From start to finish it’s an absolutely enthralling and easy watch.
The cast of “students” for both Cobra Kai and Miyagi-do are great… Each with their own “issues” or proclivities – they all individually bring something to the story, sometimes making it difficult to choose who you should be rooting for.
Ralph Macchio brings such a different LaRusso to the screen – I still can’t decide if I like him. Comparing him to the 84 championship winner – they’re just not the same person – and Macchio shows this conflicted version with ease.
John Kreese (Martin Kove) is still an asshole. Kove can hold an insidious look for so long – it’s hard to believe the guy ever smiles in real life. I both equally love it – and fear it!
Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) is still the star of the show in my opinion. I cheer for this guy in almost every scene. Zabka’s performance is pure brilliance – and is the catalyst for bringing this series success. If Zabka doesn’t win some major awards – it will be a complete travesty.
Initial Ratings:
So Many Shows Scoring 1-10: 9.0
High points: Continues with a lot of great throwbacks to the original Karate Kid movies. Characters/Cast are top-notch in this show (I’m still Team Johnny – and Zabka is absolutely amazing in the role). The overall story is good and I should have expected the final scene before going to black – it was a good touch. And how in the heck does Martin Kove pull off his sinister nature so well?
Potential low points: Some of the “fighting” is a little over the top, but especially in the finale – there IS a reason for it. Otherwise, no low points. Wait. There is. Coors Banquet Beer. Really, Johnny? That’s the best you can do. I get product placement and cheers to Coors for getting in there… but that’s his drink of choice? Geez.
Final thoughts: I am still shocked at how well done this series is… from script to cast to production – it’s just darn good. If you enjoyed the movies AT ALL – you’ll love this series. The stories are great, writing is done well, and the cast and crew are masterful in getting it done. And that darn Cobra Kai car… I NEED ONE!
