“Book me”

Bosch: Legacy season 2 episode 9 opens on the heels of Honey’s arrest at her home. The FBI speaks with Honey in the interrogation room threatening her with obstruction of justice and life in prison. They are willing to change their mind if she gives up everything she knows about the pipeline explosion and all those involved leading up to Rogers’ murder. Agent Jones likens the offer to “happy hour”.

Honey calmly and eloquently points out that “happy hour is a con”. She goes on to describe the bait and switch of cheap drinks followed by pricier ones. She refuses to cooperate and replies, “Book me.”

Trust Me

Trusty mentor and colleague Martin Rose arrives to bail Honey out of jail. While willing to help Honey, he is unnerved that this FBI debacle has not been resolved as she promised it would. Honey pleads with Marty to trust her that this will go away. Honey sees the press circling and walks over to give a statement. Martin prefers to go get the car instead. Honey explains she does not require a ride because she is scheduled to go visit the DA with Bosch.

Honey reminds the reporters of the years she has been defending clients against unjust Goliaths. She claims that the federal government wants to tarnish the work that she has done. We learn that she calls the FBI “the Federal Bureau of Intimidation”. Back at FBI headquarters, Baron fears that Honey has something up her sleeve and pointedly tells the other agents that he does not want to be embarrassed by her. We’ll see.

Date canceled

Mo is at Honey’s safe house safeguarding Ashley and Annie. We hear him on the phone with Jade apologizing for missing their scheduled outing to Huntington Gardens. He has a work obligation. Just then, the ladies shout in surprise when they see Honey on TV talking to the press.

Mo says he has to go. Jade wants to know who is there with him and he says it’s a client.

Formosa for conversation

Harry walks toward the Formosa restaurant to meet Maddie. He sees a hulking man watching him closely. Inside the restaurant, Maddie shares her concerns about Harry declining protection from RHD while Ellis is still on the loose. Harry says he is fine on his own.

The large man approaches their table to remind Harry that his efforts landed him in prison for 10 years. Harry needs no reminder and calls the man by name, Daryl Hill, who murdered someone over a drug deal gone wrong. When Hill learns Harry is no longer a detective, he taunts Harry.

Maddie puts a quick stop to Hill’s badgering when she reveals her badge and gun and refers to Hill by one of Harry’s favorite monikers. (You know, the one about the feathered friend that poops.) Maddie is clearly frustrated and tells her dad that his stubbornness is distracting her from issues of her own.

Really, Emmett?

Harry and Honey speak with District Attorney Emmett Archer. They lay out the evidence in the Foster case explaining how the watch inquiry leads them to Ellis and Long being the murderers.

Archer scoffs at their explanation acting like it is just a narrative. Honey tells Archer about their two witnesses. Again, he laughs off the idea calling the escorts Annie and Ashley (actually, Deborah Stovall and Josette Leroux) suspects rather than witnesses.

Honey accuses the DA of being only concerned about re-election when he insists that they proceed to trial. She says he simply does not want to be seen as having made a mistake in charging Foster.

Meanwhile

We find a nervous Ellis on a boat named Calamity Jane in the marina. One of his minions arrives to deliver his new identity (forged Passport and ID) along with a change of clothes. Ellis learns that his getaway driver is asking for more money and time now that Ellis is all over the media.

The delivery guy suggests that Ellis just take the boat instead, but Ellis explains that the boat has a broken engine, a fact the owner failed to share when Ellis extorted it from him. Ellis agrees to the increased charge.

Mo reaching his limit

Mo calls Harry when he is reaching the end of his rope with watching the escorts. Harry implores Mo to “take one for the team”. He assures Mo that Honey has a plan, and she will be ready to depose the ladies soon.

Harry hangs up and takes Chandler’s call instead. Her hearing is scheduled for the next day, and she is acquainted with the presiding judge.

Motion to quash

Honey has filed an “emergency motion to quash and traverse a search warrant”. The Feds walk in with the bag of shredded documents looking smug as usual.

All rise for Judge Colburn who describes the motion as suggesting that the probable cause in the search warrant is not accurate. Honey will be representing herself with Bosch at the table beside her.

Honey calls her first witness, Agent Baron. She asks Baron to read from the subpoena calling for Honey to safeguard all files related to the Carl Rogers case. He confirms the accuracy of the document.

Second witness

Honey then calls Attorney Amanda Scones as her next witness. We met Amanda briefly last year when Honey consulted with her about Lt. Cosgrove, the lead SIS officer in the James Sharp takedown.

Scones has a box of files with her. She testifies that the box contains all of Honey’s paper and digital files related to Carl Rogers. Amanda was hired by Honey to keep the files safe as dictated by the subpoena.

FBI Agent James is visibly embarrassed. Honey has indeed complied with the order to maintain and safeguard the files. She has NOT destroyed them as the search warrant claims. Honey managed to fool Matthew and the FBI into thinking she had shredded evidence.

Case dismissed

Judge Colburn rules that the false probable cause statement resulted in “tainted and illegal searches”. All evidence from those searches is no longer useable. Colburn asks the prosecutor if he plans to proceed with the case against Honey. He admits that he is not able to proceed, and the case is dismissed.

Judge Colburn does suggest that Honey may have led the FBI into this mishap, but she does not plan to act upon it. Baron threatens Honey that the inquiry against them is not over. Honey is not dissuaded.

“Yes, Officer”

Harry senses he is being followed as he heads to his office. He makes a dangerous left turn almost colliding with an oncoming vehicle in an attempt to lose the tail. Police lights flare and he realizes he is being pulled over.

Harry is ready with license and registration when he learns the approaching officer is Maddie. He finds out that CRU is watching him since he refused the RHD protection. Maddie asks about Honey and Harry confirms that she is free and that he should be out of the dark as well shortly. She pleads with her dad to not do anything crazy, and Bosch replies, “Yes, Officer” as she walks away.

Twins getting antsy

Mo calls Harry in desperation. The twins almost escaped in an Uber. Harry assures Mo that he and Honey will be there soon. Mo requests some good vinyl for the house.

Honey is just about ready to get the twins to sign their affidavits. Harry requests a ride from her since CRU is watching him and his Jeep. He tells Honey to pick him up at The Record Parlour

Harry slips out the back past the watchful eyes of CRU and heads to the record store. He selects some albums for Mo and gets into Honey’s car.

Howdy, neighbor

A man named Frank is working on the boat next to the Calamity Jane. He sees fresh snacks on the boat next door and calls out for his friend Dan. Of course, Dan is no longer there. Frank hops on to the boat calling out for Dan thinking he has returned.

Ellis takes Frank hostage.

Meanwhile, Maddie confides in Reina about struggling with the line between justice and vengeance much like her dad does. Reina says that Dockweiler has influenced her, but she will be able to regain her balance.

Getting statements

Honey works diligently with Annie and Ashley to get their statements including all the details and exploits of Ellis and Long. They hesitate but Honey and Bosch explain that anything left out could negate their immunity agreement. Ashley then tells them about extorting Dan, the boat owner. When Dan did not have the funds demanded he gave his boat the “Calamity Jane” to Ellis. Annie thinks the boat is in Marina del Rey.

Suddenly, Bosch realizes that may be where Ellis is hiding out. He takes Honey’s car and her gun asking Mo to locate the boat.

Coltrane with the tip-off

Maddie and Reina get a radio call saying someone was spotted leaving Harry’s office. It’s Sam walking Coltrane. Maddie stops to ask Sam what she knows about Harry’s whereabouts, but Harry did not tell her. Maddie uses her GPS tracking app to locate her father’s phone heading west. It looks like he is headed to the marina.

Maddie does not want to wait for backup. She believes Harry refused the original protection from RHD so he could go rogue in the search for Ellis by himself. They head to the marina.

Harry and Ellis

Harry gets a call from Mo identifying the dock and slip numbers for the Calamity Jane. He boards the boat with gun drawn looking for Ellis. Bosch finds neighbor Frank gagged in a closet. At that moment, Ellis comes up behind Bosch, taking his gun and knife off him.

Ellis has Harry at gunpoint as Harry. Harry tells Ellis that CRU is on the way. He tries to distract Ellis by telling him to check the police scanner to confirm that CRU is coming. Just as Ellis briefly looks toward the radio, Bosch knocks him off balance and they begin to fight.

Maddie approaches

Reina and Maddie have arrived at the marina and are searching for signs of Harry. Maddie hears fighting, breaking glass and a gunshot. She runs toward the noise and sees Ellis choking Harry. Ellis has his gun drawn on Harry who is on the ground. Maddie yells, “Freeze!” Ellis points the gun ready to fire when Maddie fires knocking Ellis overboard with gun still in hand.

“I got you”

Harry pulls himself up from the ground and sees Maddie standing in the distance. Maddie says, “I got you.” She repeats the phrase as did Harry when he pulled her from the box in the desert. Rescue comes full circle.

Sgt. Edgewood escorts Maddie and Harry away from the scene admonishing Harry for still talking to Maddie. They need to remain separate per FID (Force Investigation Division). Harry thanks Maddie and tells her she had no choice. Maddie tells him to thank Coltrane for tipping them off.

Betrayal

But the episode does not end there. In a moment of grave betrayal, Baron calls Agent Morrell into his office. We know her as Jade Quinn. Morrell has been deep undercover and now the FBI has Mo in their grasp for infiltrating Pharmawell. Baron asks if they are ready to go after Mo. Morrell/Quinn confirms that it’s go time. They have found their way to take down everyone in the pipeline explosion from a new vantage point.

That was certainly an eventful episode on multiple levels. Just when we think Honey and Harry are in the clear, we learn that they have been pursuing Mo this whole time as well. And now Maddie has to endure an FID investigation. That’s a lot to navigate with only one more episode to go in Bosch: Legacy season 2.
