Leaving the nest again
She has decided to move out after a few months of respite with her father. We see her at the walk-through of her old apartment. She is visibly uncomfortable as she revisits the site of her abduction. She turns in her keys and will be back when her security deposit is available.
Maddie takes a long look out over the view from Harry’s home before rolling her suitcase outside. Harry returns from walking Coltrane and asks why Maddie has to leave so soon. She says it is time for her to be on her own. But that does not mean she will be alone. For now, Maddie has chosen to live with Rico at his apartment.
Father and daughter express both their love and worry for one another. They share a hug and Maddie waves goodbye leaving Harry home alone with his trusty canine sidekick, Coltrane.
Case updates
Harry watches old footage of Lexi Parks in action on the job as Assistant City Manager of West Hollywood. He identifies her assistant Geisy Morales and meets with her to ask about Lexi. Geisy is not aware of anyone who would want to murder Lexi.
Honey calls Harry asking for help tracking down David Foster’s alibi, James Allen. She has been unable to reach him by phone and his voicemail box is full. Harry will try to identify his last known address using a booking number for James that Mo uncovered. This leads Harry to the home of Jordynne Allen, James’s sister.
Harry asks the sister about James’ whereabouts. Unbeknownst to Bosch, Jordynne reports that James is dead. He was found in a Hollywood alley and had apparently overdosed on drugs.
Hello, Youngblood
Harry gets the names of the detectives who reported Allen’s death to his sister. What do you know? It’s Pierce and Vega! Apparently, when Bosch left the department, it allowed Pierce to leave his graveyard shift assignment and rejoin his old partner, Detective Christina Vega.
The pair of detectives exhibit some reluctance to talk to Harry. Harry asks them about the circumstances of Allen’s death. While they told the sister that it was probably an overdose, the autopsy revealed strangulation with a wire. There are similarities to another male escort’s murder, so it may be a serial case. Allen’s phone was not recovered.
Welcome to CRU, Maddie
New living quarters are not the only change for Maddie. Sgt. Edgewood learned of her prowess on the bracelet burglary case and asks her to fill an open position in the Crime Reduction Unit (CRU). We learn that Vasquez also sang Maddie’s praises, and the two cops will be partners again.
As thrilled as Maddie is with her new assignment, she does not tell her day. Harry finds out when he meets up with old pal Mank at Swingers Diner. Bosch plays along when Mank brags about Maddie getting promoted to CRU.
Therapy talk
Honey meets with her therapist. She expresses frustration about representing David Foster. Honey talks about defending him when he was 19. She was able to get charges reduced and arranged a place for him to clean up his drug habit. She is upset how things have fallen apart with him.
Honey is also irritated about the man who wanted to chit-chat with her after meditation the other night. When the therapist suggests they further explore the topic more, Honey refuses to talk about it.
Pancakes and Promotion
Later, Maddie is working on her victim impact statement for the upcoming Dockweiler sentencing. Rico returns from a run, and she shares how she is struggling to understand why she needs to do this. After getting less than the first sentence written, Rico pulls some Du-Par’s pancake batter from the refrigerator. Maddie is onboard with pancakes but suggests they go to the restaurant instead. (Do yourself a favor and go check out Du-Par’s Fall and Halloween menu items . . . yum!)
That evening Maddie celebrates her promotion with Paulina, Reina and Rico. She talks to Paulina about the possibility of her returning to duty. Paulina still has days with pain and her mom wishes she would not go back. Only time will tell.
The next day Rico drops Maddie off away from prying eyes. While Vasquez knows of their relationship, they choose to keep it under wraps otherwise. Rico would like Maddie to continue staying with him, but she explains how she needs a place of her own.
FBI “digs deeper”
Agents James and Jones visit Raul Arraya in prison. They play the recording from last season where Honey insinuates to Willy Datz that Raul’s gang might do her a favor and visit Datz if he does not give up the information about the Russians. Raul insists that Chandler was bluffing. No, his group did not attack Datz. It was a Russian prisoner that killed him.
The agents ask about Chandler’s visit to Arraya after Datz’s murder. He tells them that she was verifying what had happened and ensuring that Raul had not gone after Datz.
Meanwhile, Mo worked his magic and accessed Matthew’s phone. This allows Honey to know about any further meetings, texts, calls, etc. that Matthew might have with the Feds. At this time, the communications appear to have paused.
Why so angry?
Honey and Harry discuss David Foster’s case over dinner at Musso and Frank Grill. They have lost ground now that David has no alibi after James Allen’s death. They have been unable to find an intersection between David and Lexi. Honey tells Harry they need to express doubts about the DNA findings. Could David have been framed. Bosch is not convinced since David has already lied. Honey comes to David’s defense pointing that the lie was motivated by trying to hide the drug use.
All the while they are talking, one of the men from the extortion scheme sits at the bar spying on them. The man returns to a vehicle with the other gruff looking guy. They clearly have an interest in Honey and Harry, but why?
Also clear is the older guy’s rage. He complains about a homeless man that approaches their vehicle for money. When he refuses, the transient walks away and begins urinating at a storefront. The angry extortionist gets out and feigns an offering to the poor man. Instead, he knocks him in the head with the butt of his gun and kicks him repeatedly on the ground. This guy is the worst!
Following
The pair of extortionists watch Bosch leave the restaurant and stop at the valet. The angry one walks past Bosch and clocks his blue Jeep Cherokee. He tells the younger guy to follow Bosch while he goes in the restaurant to keep an eye on Honey. What do these guys want?
The younger guy follows Bosch home and pulls mail from his mailbox to identify him. Back at the restaurant, Honey requests the check and gathers her things to leave the restaurant. Younger guy calls older guy and gives him Harry’s name (brutally mispronounced). He drives back to the restaurant to pick up his partner in crime. They follow Honey as she leaves in her Mercedes.
False charges
The two mystery men follow Honey for a few blocks. Then the older guy fakes a call to the police reporting her as a drunk driver. Seconds later, they activate police lights on their vehicle. Wait, these guys are cops?? Sure enough, they pull Honey over to test her for driving under the influence. She thinks fast and places a call to Martin. She also locks her extra set of keys in the car.
Honey refuses to take any sobriety test and the two cops pass her off to two uniformed officers who take her to the Hollywood station for booking. The two dirty cops stay behind and break into Honey’s car to look at files in her trunk. The older cop finds the file labeled David Foster and says, “Bingo!” Why is this of interest to him?
“Chocolate croissant, Diet Coke and a barf bag for my friend”
Honey sits uncomfortably in a holding cell next to a woman who is retching. Mank walks down the hall and is completely surprised to see Honey sitting there. He asks what’s going on and then offers her a refreshment. Honey responds saying, “a chocolate croissant, Diet Coke and a barf bag for my friend here.”
Mank trusts her to sit uncuffed on the booking bench until he returns (you know, the same bench where we see drunk Santa in season 1).
David comes clean
Harry and Martin meet with David Foster at the prison. Bosch makes it clear that he is done if David keeps lying. Finally, David admits that he was in a relationship with James Allen for the last six months. He knew nothing of David’s apparent murder.
Later, Bosch picks up Honey and takes her to retrieve her car that has been towed. She is stunned to see that the car is somehow now unlocked. She checks her files for safe keeping, but something is askew. The Foster file is in a different location now. Honey tells Harry that the two cops who arrested her were in plain clothes not uniforms. Harry will try to identify them.
FBI closing in
Agents James and Jones are making gains on their investigation. They have the schematic of the shipping container and Honey and Harry tied to the port. They do not, however, have proof of Bosch blowing up the pipeline. James and Jones find surveillance footage outside Simon Wakefield’s home the day he was found dead.
You will recall that Wakefield was Carl Rogers’ financial advisor. When Honey arrived to his home last season, she found him floating dead in his pool. The FBI now has her fingerprints on the pool skimmer that we know she used to draw out Wakefield’s phone.
James and Johns pull up two portions of the feed. One shows Honey leaving Wakefield’s home. The other shows Lev Ivanovich hours earlier leaving the home. This shows that Honey did not report Wakefield’s murder and explains how she obtained the schematic of the shipping container that Matthew shared.
The FBI is getting closer to charging Honey and Harry. Harry and Honey now have the truth from David, but they have an entirely new mystery with these two scheming cops who are interested in the case as well.
