Let us investigate further the events of Bosch: Legacy episode 10 ‘Always/All Ways’.

Refresh your memory:

A narrow escape

We have the assassin hunting Vibiana and Gilberto in the building. Vibiana has texted Harry telling them they are on the 2nd floor. The assassin is also on the 2nd floor looking for them.

Harry is on the ground floor and uses the freight elevator. The assassin hears the elevator and turns back. Harry calls the elevator to continue up and slips out surreptitiously on to the 1st floor without stopping the elevator.

Harry sees the shadow of the assassin on the second-floor head to the stairs to go up as she hears the elevator climbing higher. As the assassin climbs the stairs beyond the 2nd floor, it allows Harry to climb the stairs to the 2nd floor to find the heirs.

The assassin reaches the floor where the elevator stops and shoots repeatedly through the grate thinking Vibi and Gilberto are inside. She finds it empty.

Meanwhile, this gives Harry time to find the heirs and usher them to his Jeep outside. They narrowly escape in the vehicle as the assassin shoots at them from the top floor.

Too late for Sloan

Harry visits Mo and tells him that he has stashed Vibiana and Gilberto somewhere safe. Bosch has a link to access the cameras in Vibiana’s building. Harry wants to see the face of the assassin(s). Harry had expected more than one person, but learns it is just the one woman preying on the heirs.

Later, Mo finds the video of the assassin holding Sloan under duress making him call Vibiana about a security check. Tragically, as soon as Vibiana buzzes “him” in, the assassin shoots and kills Sloan.

Honey’s request

Honey meets before a judge sitting next to a representative of the LAPD. Honey explains that she needs the body cam footage from the officers on the day James Sharp and Nicole Davis were killed.

Kessler from the LAPD tries to argue that the police do not have to turn over the footage until they complete their internal investigation. Honey responds saying that is not the spirit of the law and that the public deserves to see what happened.

The judge strongly encourages Kessler to release the footage. The judge says she will compel disclosure if he does not comply with her recommendation.

Maddie on the camera

Of course, this footage includes Maddie as she was part of the team drawn on Sharp’s vehicle that day. Harry sees Maddie on camera when he visits Mo about the video footage at Vibiana’s building.

Harry points Maddie out to Mo telling him that is his daughter. He tells Mo to keep Maddie out of the investigative research. Mo responds telling him that it is Honey’s case, and she actually pays him better than Harry.

Harry brings up the matter with Honey. He threatens to end all cooperation with her if she includes Maddie in her case. Honey implores him to understand that it is about what Maddie’s camera shows, not her personally. Harry does not care. He demands that she not include Maddie in any way.

Lunch talk

Maddie and Reina stop for a lunch on the go at a food truck. Vasquez complains about not getting an actual lunch break like they used to. That would allow them to eat healthier. Maddie teases Reina about the comment since they make regular runs to Trejo’s Donuts. Vasquez responds saying that police officers are immune to donut calories.

Maddie spots a man exiting a city vehicle. She believes this is Dockweiler, the inspector she spoke with on the phone. She walks up to him in line at the food truck and introduces herself. He asks if they have captured the screen cutter yet. She tells him no, but thanks him for helping to keep an eye out.

Of course, as viewers, we cringe at the idea of Maddie making personal contact with whom we are led to believe is the actual screen cutter.

On patrol

Maddie and her TO are back out on patrol. Maddie is pleased to report that she just received her first court summons. Vasquez tells her she will soon not be excited to see those orders. But Maddie is celebrating another “first” as a cop.

A call comes over the radio about a shooting. Maddie and Reina respond to the call and pull up to an abandoned house. They clear the lower level and then find an injured man upstairs. He has multiple gunshot wounds and Reina tells Maddie he is “circling”, as in the drain. The man is dying.

Vasquez calls for a rescue ambulance. Reina asks the man who shot him, but he does not reply. Maddie grabs the man’s hand and comforts him. She tells him she is there. Reina does not understand what Maddie is doing. The man succumbs to his injuries and dies. Maddie tells Reina that “no one should die alone”.

Their part is done, and the case now goes to homicide.

Second chance for Gustafson

Harry approaches Gustafson. Mo has given him the video of Vince Shipman selling the opioids she supposedly prescribed for patients. Detective Gustafson greets Harry with his usual snark.

Harry tells Gustafson he is there to help him fix things and solve the Basu murder. Bosch tells Gustafson what he has found out about Dr. Shipman and gives him the flash drive. He also recommends that Gustafson collect cell phone data from the night of the murder. He assumes Shipman’s cell phone will appear in the area.

Bosch tells Gustafson that he should be able to get a confession from Shipman. Gustafson sees the situation as a quid pro quo. He asks what Harry wants in return. Harry simply wants Gustafson to arrest the real killer. He points out that he still talks to people who have the authority to arrest Shipman if Gustafson does not do the right thing and go after him.

Later in the episode, Harry hears from Honey that Gustafson did indeed follow through. She is thrilled that Jeffrey Herstadt’s name is cleared.

Second chance for Morrison

Honey approaches Detective Morrison at a café. She wants to show him the body cam video she has now received from the LAPD. Morrison is not thrilled to see Honey, but he watches the footage.

Honey shows him how SIS assigns Reina and Maddie the job of putting up crime scene tape. Doing so means they are now turned away from the SIS officers. Honey points out where Cosgrove leans into the trunk and then takes something to the driver’s side of the vehicle.

Honey wants Morrison to turn over the recording of Nicole’s talk with her mom about the drop. As you may recall, in the recording, Mrs. Davis asks about James Sharp’s gun. Nicole confirms that she saw him put it in the trunk.

It appears that Cosgrove takes the gun from the trunk and plants it on the driver’s side of the car after having shot and killed James and Nicole.

Kidnapping Creighton

That’s right. Harry surprises Creighton and chokes him out, rendering him unconscious. He tosses him in the backseat of Creighton’s car and cuffs his hands with zip ties.

He peels out of the parking garage and takes him to Vibiana’s building, which is completely abandoned. Everyone has been evicted except for Vibiana and she is now elsewhere hiding out.

Flashback 2003

We get a flashback into Harry’s deployment in Afghanistan. It is 2003 and Harry is a sergeant in Special Forces. Harry’s team captures men from a cave and takes them to be interrogated.

Harry speaks with an officer outside named Edge (not the same Edge we knew from Hollywood Station). Harry is concerned that the prisoner will not give up any information. After all, they did not find any evidence in the cave.

Edge ensures Harry that he will use techniques to get the prisoner to talk. He will explain all the horrific ways he will torture him. If the prisoner does not comply, Edge will implement those horrific techniques.

Interrogating Creighton

Creighton is gagged and strapped to a chair in the abandoned building. Harry ungags him and directs bright lights at his face. Creighton calls for help to no avail. He cannot believe it is Bosch and suggests that Bosch will not really hurt him.

Bosch slams his foot into Creighton knocking the chair back on to the floor. Bosch wants to know who the assassin is. With no response from Creighton, Harry sets torture tactics in motion. Creighton cries out saying he really does not know the assassin’s name. All communications have been via text on a burner phone.

Harry grabs the burner and gun from Creighton’s briefcase. He tells Creighton to message the assassin that the heirs are at Vance’s country home. Creighton says she will think it is a setup, so Bosch insists that Creighton make in convincing. Call his people, set up a drone, whatever it takes to make the assassin believe the heirs are at that house.

Plan in motion

Sure enough, the assassin receives the message from Creighton, which includes what appear to be footage of Vibiana and Gilberto sitting on the dock at the house. She prepares for her assignment.

Bosch prepares as well. He meets with Mo to get gear. Mo has powerful night vision cameras, Bluetooth speakers and a wide-angle lens camera hidden in a gnome statue. Mo has perfectly named the gnome Harry.

Harry struggles to set up the Bluetooth and Mo sweetly intervenes. Mo asks Harry why he does not get the police involved instead of putting himself at such risk. Harry says the police will not respond fast enough and he needs to do it himself. Mo offers backup. Harry thanks him but declines.

Head-to-head

Harry has the gnome set up at the country house and await the arrival of the assassin. He watches her via the gnome camera connected to his phone as she enters the house through a root cellar door.

The assassin moves carefully through the home hearing the voice of Vibiana reading to Gilberto. Harry enters the house as well. As the assassin nears a bedroom, the voice of Vibiana gets louder. She believes she has found them. Harry is lurking nearby.

The assassin fires shots at the bed thinking she has eliminated her targets, but she finds no one there. The heirs are not actually there. Harry calls out from behind holding the assassin at gunpoint. If she surrenders, he will not shoot her. She ignores him and a gunfight ensues between the two of them.

The assassin counts in her head as Harry fires all six shots from his gun. She peers over the railing taunting Harry about being out of ammo in his “old man’s gun”. “Mr. Old School” (as Antonio referred to him in S6) is one step ahead. He has a second gun and takes out the assassin.

Dad, where are you?

That same night, Maddie returns home calling her dad on the phone. Unable to reach him, she leaves a message threatening to sell his records if he does not call her back.

She walks through the duplex turns on the shower and puts her things on the bed. In a frightening moment, it looks like her screen is cut, however, it seems to actually be a reflection of items in the room. Whether or not this camera shot was purposeful, we have a very uneasy feeling.

Then there is a knock at the door. Could the screen cutter be there? She looks through the peep hole and goes to open the door. Of course, she does not realize that Dockweiler is the screen cutter. If it were him, she might still open the door.

Thankfully, it is Honey at the door, and we feel relieved.

Different perspectives

Honey sits down to talk to Maddie about her suit against the LAPD. Maddie is upset that Honey would get involved in something that could hurt Maddie or the careers of other officers. She believed that Honey cared about her.

Honey asserts that she does indeed care about Maddie, but believes the officers are not telling the truth. She wants some justice for Nicole’s young son.

Morrison steps up

Honey is at the law firm preparing to leave for the probate petition. Morrison arrives and wants to speak with her. He offers her the device with the recording under the condition that she use it for more than just settling the case. He asks her to use it to prompt changes in the department.

Honey promises to help how she can with changes. She also reminds him that she works for her client and will do what is best for Kalon. Morrison hands over the recording and Honey thanks him.

Petition filed

Honey meets with reporters outside the courthouse where she has filed the probate petition on behalf of Whitney Vance’s granddaughter and great-grandson.

One reporter asks why the heirs are still referred to as pseudonyms. Honey reminds them of the importance of protecting them when such a large amount of money is involved.

Honey encourages the reporters to read the petition.

Home sweet home

Harry picks up Vibiana and Gilberto from Oxnard. They have been staying at the home of Olivia McDonald, the adoptive sister of Nick Santanello. All three are thrilled to have learned of each other and see their family grow. Olivia now knows she has a niece and great-nephew. It is time for Vibiana and Gilberto to leave, but they are excited to see Olivia again soon at Vibiana’s art show.

Harry pulls into the gate at Vibiana’s building. He takes an extra look around outside for their safety. They say their goodbyes and Vibiana looks forward to seeing Harry at the art show that night. She hopes he will bring his daughter so she can meet her.

Warning to Creighton

Harry slips into a different part of the building where Creighton is still being held. Harry tells him that the assassin is gone. Bosch informs him that it was Creighton’s gun that was used to shoot the assassin. If anyone ever finds her body, his gun will be there, too.

Ridiculously, Creighton begins to offer a job to Harry due to his skillset. Harry uses an expletive to shut him up.

From heartfelt to horrific

Maddie has a heart-to-heart talk with Harry at his office. She was so worried when she could not reach him. Of course, Harry understands all too well and worries about her, too, knowing the dangers she faces as a police officer.

They promise to always respond and let the other one know they are safe. Maddie also happily tells Harry that she had her first experience of driving on shift that day. He is happy for her.

Maddie goes home and puts her things down. She turns on her shower. As the camera pans down the hall, we see the screen cutter hiding in her closet with a wrestling mask on.

Art exhibit

Harry arrives to Vibiana’s art show and tells her that Maddie is supposed to meet him there. She offers him any piece of art he wants. Harry looks around the show stopping at one painting in particular.

Honey walks about and explains that piece is already taken. She asks about Maddie. Harry is still upset with her and suggests she wants to serve a subpoena to Maddie. Honey tries to explain how important Maddie’s body cam video is and that Maddie would only need to testify that she was wearing it. Harry will not budge and returns the one dollar she gave him to “work” for her.

Harry leaves the art show as Gabriela, Vibiana and Olivia take a photo together. It is really beautiful to see the family together.

Maddie, where are you?

Harry does not understand why Maddie did not show up for the exhibit. He calls her but gets no answer. He decides to stop by her home.

Maddie does not answer the door. Harry is so worried that he decides to kick down the front door. He searches her place and does not find her. He does, however, find that the screen in one of her bedroom windows has been cut.

Fade to black. Credits roll.
