Bosch: Legacy S1E1 brings us up to speed on new circumstances for Harry, Maddie and Honey.

‘Wrong Side of Goodbye”

Bosch: Legacy follows the lives of father daughter duo Harry and Maddie Bosch. Harry has recently left the LAPD and is now working as a private investigator. Maddie is in the training phase of her pursuit to be a police officer with the LAPD, a legacy officer following in her father’s footsteps. Both Harry and Maddie continue to cross paths with defense attorney Honey “Money” Chandler.

A few other reminders from the original Bosch series are shared on screen to catch viewers up to present day.
We are reminded that Carl Rogers is the hedge fund manager who orchestrated attempts on Honey and Maddie’s lives after Vincent Franzen accused Rogers of insider trading. While Maddie did not take a bullet from Charles Kipps, Honey was shot and remained in critical condition for a long time. We know that Rogers is also behind the murders of Franzen and Judge Donna Sobel.
There is a different actor playing Carl Rogers in Bosch: Legacy, so the review portion of the episode is especially helpful for identifying the character.
Let us take a look at present day in the premiere episode of Bosch: Legacy.
One more night
Just like the song of the same name playing in the background (performed by Michael Kiwanuka), Maddie has “one more night” of training with Officer O’Neill. They are in pursuit of two suspects who have exited their vehicle. Maddie follows one of the men, eventually tackling and cuffing the suspect.
Instead of commending Maddie, Officer O’Neill admonishes her for separating from him. He claims the suspect she captured as his own and says he is writing her up.
A grisly attack
Doctor Manny Basu, known for working with the homeless encampments during the pandemic, leaves work at night and walks past several tents on the sidewalk. He stops to check on one gentleman and then continues on his way.
Basu is then brutally attacked with multiple stab wounds to his side. The doctor bleeds out.
Thorne in my side
Lt. Thorne is back for the spinoff series. Maddie sits next to another officer in training, Paulina Calderon, as Thorne briefs the officers during roll call.
The lieutenant mentions the murder of Dr. Basu and tells the officers to also be on the lookout for the Thai Town peeping tom. (This gives me vibes of the infamous Koreatown Killer from the original series.)
Thorne introduces Maddie and Paulina Calderon as officers in training. Before revealing their assignments, he mentions the incident where Maddie separated from her partner.
Maddie learns that she will be working East Hollywood with Officer Vasquez as her new TO (training officer).
Harry, P.I.
Bosch has been asked to recover a music box from a safe.
Harry walks through a neighborhood at night calling to Coltrane even though the dog is not actually there. It is just a ruse to place Harry in the neighborhood.
Harry climbs over a fence and breaks into the house. Someone is assisting him from the outside, helping Harry figure out the code for the safe. Harry opens the safe and retrieves the music box. He opens the box to check for the contents and the music begins playing from the box.
Now Harry is stuck in the living room as the homeowner approaches having been awakened by the music box. Just when we think Harry will be caught, loud music begins playing from the other room. This distracts the homeowner and Harry slips out unnoticed.
Old school
Harry’s accomplice, Mo, picks him up in the car outside. Harry asks Mo how he played the music inside the house. He explains that he accessed the home’s network. Harry is impressed, but Mo shrugs it off as simple.
Harry pays in cash. Mo thinks Harry is “old school” for using actual paper instead of a payment app. Of course, Harry has no problem with that classification.
Favor for an old friend
The next day, a woman named Danielle visits Harry’s office to pick up the music box and recipes that Harry retrieved. We learn that the music box holds her grandmother’s wedding ring. She is so grateful to have these items back in her possession after her ex would not release them.
We also learn that Danielle is the daughter of Harry’s good friend, Dr. Golliher, who later stops by Harry’s home with a thank you gift.
Harry walks Danielle to the door and notices a business card on the ground in front of his office. It is a card for Trident Security. On the back is a handwritten note that reads, “Call me ASAP” signed with the initials “J.C.”
Mistrial
The judge declares a mistrial in the Carl Rogers proceedings due to a hung jury. Honey is there with daughter Michelle for the announcement. Harry and Maddie sit behind them.
Honey is devastated. She is clearly and understandably shaken from the ordeal. She has been doing target practice at the shooting range, quite skillfully, I might add.
Harry presumes Rogers will either get a plea deal or no punishment whatsoever. Honey approaches DDA Alex Kennedy and wants to know about a new trial. Kennedy reports they may not have enough for a new trial since witness Willy Datz recanted his testimony.
You will recall that Carl Rogers’ attorney J. Reason Fowwkes was the go-between who contacted Datz to obtain a hired hitman on behalf of Rogers. Fowwkes is dead and the hitman is dead. Datz was the only one left to rat on Rogers.
Training with Vasquez
So, what is it like for Maddie working with Officer Reina Vasquez? She is tough, no-nonsense, for sure. Expectations are high, social conversation minimal.
At least Maddie is not facing the same ordeal as her fellow training officer, Paulina Calderon. Paulina reports that her TO seems to be hitting on her.
Vasquez is at least a little impressed with Maddie after she takes down a woman on her back during a domestic violence call. Then again, Vasquez does remind Maddie that she told her to watch her back. So, Maddie sort of gets a compliment and an admonishment at the same time.
It will be interesting to see more of this partnership.

Honey takes on a client
Honey is working at the law practice of a former law professors named Marty Rose. The firm appears to be less about glitz and high-profile cases and more about justice and service. Marty asks Honey to represent Jeffrey Herstadt, a young homeless man who confessed to murdering Dr. Basu.
While this sounds insurmountable, we learn that Jeffrey has untreated schizophrenia, and that the confession was most likely coerced. Honey obtains a psychological evaluation for Jeffrey and the expert explains that, in Jeffrey’s condition, his main goal would be to get out of the interrogation room at any cost.
Harry meets Whitney Vance
Harry meets John Creighton, formerly of LAPD, now head of Trident Security, in response to the business card left at his office door. Creighton explains that he did not know how else to reach Harry, who has an unlisted phone number.
Creighton informs Harry that his extremely wealthy client, Whitney Vance wants to meet with him. He has no further details. Harry arrives at Vance’s ginormous home. Harry is escorted through a metal detector by David Sloan, Mr. Vance’s personal security at the mansion.
Before talking, Vance asks Bosch to sign a confidentially agreement. Harry signs using a particularly impressive gold pen that has been in Vance’s family for generations. Harry will get ten thousand dollars just for hearing Vance’s request.
Vance’s request
Vance is very ill, probably near death. He sits in a wheelchair with one hand covered, the other one too unsteady for a handshake. He has no heir to inherit he billions of dollars associated with his aviation company. But Vance shares something no one else knows. Whitney Vance became involved with a young Mexican woman in 1952. Her name was Vibiana, and she became pregnant with Vance’s child.
Vance loved Vibiana but did not have the courage to stand up to his father, who said he would disown him if Vance stayed with Vibiana. Vance never saw Vibiana again. Is she alive or dead? Does he have a child out there? Bosch agrees to investigate, but Vance warns that all communications must be strictly between him and Vance only.
As Bosch leaves the home, he meets Vance’s very over-protective assistant, Ida. He again encounters Sloan who instructs him to also exit via the metal detector. Bosch jokes that they must fear that he stole the fancy gold pen. Bosch grabs his things just before Sloan tries to pick them up and leaves.
Searching for Vibiana
Harry visits the block where Vance said Vibiana lived back in 1952. There is no longer anything there, just empty lots. As Bosch returns to his car, he notices a car parked down the street as if they have been following him.
Later, Harry cleverly covers the “retired” label on his LAPD badge to speak with someone about finding a death certificate for Vibiana. Sadly, he learns that she died of suicide just 8 months after learning she was pregnant with Vance’s child.
Harry reports back to Vance who suspects this is a dead end. But Harry wants to continue the search. Could Vibiana have given birth before she took her life? This feels personal to Bosch, and he wants to help. Vance agrees for Harry to proceed with the search.
Harry gets rattled
It is nighttime and Coltrane suddenly barks while Bosch is working at home. The house begins to shake. It is an earthquake. Windows break. As Bosch reviews the damage the next day, he sees that it was very serious. You can hear the house straining against stretched beams.
Harry’s neighbor called the building inspector fearing that the house would fall down the hill on to their own. Sure enough, the inspector red tags the house. Harry cannot stay there. He will have to sleep at his P.I. office and shower at the gym next door. There also seems to be the problematic detail of his earthquake insurance having lapsed.

Honey asks for help
Honey stops by Harry’s house and asks him to be an expert witness in Jeffrey’s trial. He declines right away. She tries to persuade him explaining that Jeffrey’s confession appears to be coerced. She asks if he will at least review the interview footage.
Later that night, Maddie stops by and asks Harry to help Honey. After all, she has been so important to Maddie in the last several years after Eleanor died.
Harry goes to Honey’s home, first asking her why she is still living in the house where she was shot. She is adamant that she will not allow fear of Carl Rogers to take her home away from her. Harry then admonishes Honey for using Maddie to persuade him to help with Jeffrey’s case. He does agree to help, however, confirming that he believes it was a “cooked confession”.
Harry testifies to his findings in court and the confession tape will be suppressed. Honey thinks the DA’s office will drop the case. The prosecutor says they will proceed and gives Honey lab work linking Jeffrey’s DNA to Dr. Basu. Honey is crestfallen and Bosch is irate. He does not want to help a murderer. As Harry approaches his car, he again notices that someone is watching him, but that vehicle pulls away.
Bad news on Rogers
A breaking news story reveals that the DA has chosen not to put Rogers on trial again.
Michelle drives Honey to Harry’s house where Maddie is there helping him pack up his things. Honey wants to speak to Harry alone outside. She asks him for his help in bringing down Rogers.
Harry agrees saying they must “do it my way this time”. Honey agrees saying, “your way”.
Ida finds Vance unresponsive
Ida is leaving the Vance mansion for the evening. She notices a light in Vance’s office. She walks down the hall to remind him that he should be in bed. We see Vance from behind sitting in front of fire.
Ida calls to him, but Vance is unresponsive.
Bosch: Legacy season 1 episode 1 dropped us right into the new lives of Harry, Maddie and Honey. It is so great to see them back on screen and tackling new fights for justice. These three make quite the squad.
