Bluff City Law Review

It’s a little early to write a review for a series coming to NBC in the fall – but after screening the Bluff City Law pilot – I immediately was “all-in” and had to put something together.

This show is in-your-face fantastic, and it needs to take the top spot of your “What To Watch” list. In fact, it’s so good, we’ve already announced we will be doing a podcast specific to this show! Follow along with the Bluff City Podcast on twitter!

The Who

Dean Georgaris is the creative genius behind Bluff City Law and there’s a long and talented list completing the main cast: Jimmy Smits, Caitlin McGee, Scott Shepherd, Barry Sloane, Michael Luwoye, MaameYaa Boafo, Stony Blyden and Jayne Atkinson.

The What

Part family drama and part legal procedural – this show focuses on the fractured relationship of Elijah Strait (Jimmy Smits) and his daughter, Sydney (Caitlin McGee). Both superstar lawyers in their own right – Elijah asks Sydney to rejoin his legal firm to take on an almost unwinnable case.

Things aren’t quite what they seem and there’s a lot of backstory to unfold as viewers will revel in the grit and determination of the characters. There’s a lot of heart, hope, and potential for glory as the story comes together.

Will they make it? Will they win?

The Where

Based in and shot in Memphis, Tennessee – it’s the perfect atmosphere for this series. Memphis brings a certain spice to the show – and adds to the overall effect. It just wouldn’t be the same if it were New York City or Los Angeles. (It also wouldn’t be titled ‘Bluff City Law’)

Initial Ratings:

So Many Shows Scoring 1-10: 9.0

High points: Jimmy Smits is perfect in his role, but Caitlin McGee is a standout surprise with a performance that will surely captivate you. Quality writing brings a lot of great memorable lines that will invoke quite a few emotions – and the delivery from all of the cast is second to none. There’s a great mix of ‘legal’ meeting ‘family’ drama – without either being diluted or overshadowed by the other.

Potential low points: There may be some people saying “oh, another legal drama?” – and that may keep some viewers away initially, but it’s done so well – I believe they’ll find the show.

Final thoughts: I was already a fan of Jimmy Smits and Dean Georgaris – this should have been an “easy” watch for me no matter what… The truth is – I was blown away – this pilot far exceeded my original expectations and will do the same for you. If this show were a poker hand, it would definitely be a royal flush – an unstoppable winner.

The show’s mantra is “CHANGE THE WOLD!” – and fittingly so… After you watch it, it might just change yours.
