Twin Peaks: The Return Two Part Finale

September 3rd, 2017. Only days away. Are we really that close to the end?

This isn’t the first time we’ve said our goodbyes to the wonderfully surreal Twin Peaks. The first time around came with a glimmer of hope that maybe it wasn’t really over, when Laura Palmer uttered those words, “I’ll see you again in 25 years.” True to Laura’s prophecy, 25 years later, we were blessed when Lynch and Frost gave us Twin Peaks: The Return. And now it’s time to say goodbye all over again.

It’s been amazing – It’s been beautiful – It’s been torturous. We’ve laughed, cried, screamed out loud, theorized, and probably set a world record for how many times WTF? could be tweeted in one season.

We’re left now with a two part finale, fitting for Twin Peaks, with the duality theme that runs throughout. There are a gazillion questions that may or may not be answered this Sunday. Will Coop go back to Janey-E and Sonny Jim? What’s going on with Audrey? Who funded that creepy glass box? Who is Linda? Where is Billy? What’s up with Sarah? Is it all just a dream? Who is the dreamer? Will Lucy and Andy get the red chair or the beige chair? And the biggest question: Will we get another season, or perhaps a spin off? (There’s a petition, by the way, if you’d like to sign it.)

Let’s be honest: Twin Peaks can’t possibly ever be tied up all nice and neat, and any true TP fan wouldn’t want it to be. If there’s one thing we’ve learned from the show, it’s that loose ends don’t always have to be tied up. F–k you, loose ends, as Diane would say. Up until around episode 14, I had my doubts that any of the many plot lines would be wrapped up at all. But then the gears seemed to shift, and all the threads started coming together. We tearfully bid farewell to our beloved Log Lady, Big Ed and Norma got engaged, Audrey had her dance, and we got that huge Diane twist. But the biggest moment of all? FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper is back! OMG! You’re awake. 100 percent.

Finally. TP fans all over the world went crazy, jumping up and down, shouting, “He’s back! He’s back!” At that point it felt like, by God, Lynch and Frost are going to do this.  Everything and everyone is converging. It’s all coming together, and it’s all coming to an end of some sort. Whether that will be a final end, or just an end for a little while is yet to be seen, but we can take some comfort in the fact that Lynch himself has said Twin Peaks is not a story with an ending. Kind of like life. Our Twin Peaks goes on, if only on the other side somewhere.

To David Lynch and Mark Frost, and to the cast and crew and everyone involved for giving us this amazing and wonderful gift, thank you.  We will carry Twin Peaks and its odd, quirky, lovable characters in our hearts always.

If you didn’t know, Showtime will be airing all episodes of Twin Peaks: The Return back to back on Sunday, September 3rd, leading up to the finale. Grab some cherry pie, and some damn fine coffee, and soak it up, my friends. I may not know where this thing is headed, and I may not know if this goodbye will be forever, but one thing I do know: there’s gonna be tears.
