Get ready for some adventures with Harry and Helen Tasker on True Lies, a new dramedy inspired by the original motion picture of the same name from James Cameron. Whether on European spy missions or backyard barbeques at home, this married couple keeps things interesting. Well, after Helen discovers Harry’s secret life, that is.
After consulting with a friend, Helen, a linguistics professor, mistakes Harry’s vagueness and incessant travel as a computer salesperson as a cover for an affair. She begins to have doubts about their marriage. Has it really become boring? Even their two kids wonder why Dad does not put more thought into their gifts from his work trips. Everyone is feeling a little disconnected.
Helen confronts Harry who is afraid to reveal that the computer sales position is actually his cover for his role as a spy at Omega Sector. Harry tries his best to keep his secret for the safety of his family (and the world!). But when he proposes a romantic getaway to Paris that coincides with a mission, things unravel, and the secret comes out. Think fistfights, capture, interrogation and high-risk escapes. Helen is not sure what to do with this information initially, or what it means for their family’s future, but she likes the excitement this brings to their relationship.
A double punch
True Lies boasts comedy and action, and sometimes even the action is funny. It makes for a very entertaining ride. Helen learns that her yoga and linguistic skills are not limited to the studio and classroom environments. It is a joy to see her realize her power and potential. And I would be remiss to not include the heartwarming moments as well. At its core, it is the love for each other and their family that bring the adventures full circle.
The supporting cast is fantastic. Harry does not work alone. He has the support of his co-operatives Maria (Erica Hernandez) and Luther (Mike O’Gorman) while mission surveillance is covered by Albert “Gib” Gibson (Omar Miller). Then there is the head honcho at Omega Sector played by Beverly D’Angelo, a delightful choice for leading the group. Even the Tasker kids, Dana (Annabella Didion) and Jake (Lucas Jaye), are keeping things mysterious on the home front.
A great escape
While the show keeps things relatable with the family unit, you cannot deny the thrill of escapism as you journey with Omega Sector to exotic locations and experience the high stakes. There are wardrobe changes, gadgets, and music to match the moods.
Allow yourself to enjoy the on-screen surveillance imagery with the perspective of Gib as he manages the logistics from the van. Split second decisions mean the difference between getting caught and getting away. I would urge you not to spoil the fun by analyzing the accuracy of said equipment and decisions. Just allow yourself to step into the world of high stakes espionage and be the hero we all want to be.
An impressive leading couple
There is no doubt that Steve Howey and Ginger Gonzaga can pull off the confidence and charm of a spy power couple. Howey can go from the somewhat geeky shirt and tie of a computer salesperson to a tuxedo and the whole mood changes on screen. Is this the same guy? Likewise, Gonzaga plays a cute mom with ponytail and yoga pants. But she absolutely brings the glamour in formal wear.
These two can command a scene without overshadowing each other or their castmates. Their versatility is impressive. Both are adept at easily shifting back and forth between the comedy and tension. They seem comfortable portraying Helen and Harry’s inevitable gaffes. So, we laugh along while still being drawn into the allure of secret agents.
True Lies gives viewers a unique opportunity to escape into a secret world of suspense while also enjoying some great comedy. Eventually, the focus on family brings us back to reality and reminds us to be grateful for life and love at home.
