Timeless Episode 7
You can tell we’re getting closer to the end because there was A LOT that happened this episode. We’ve had our build up and now the epic game of Rittenhouse vs Time Team is about to come to a head. Things will begin progressing quickly from here on out. I hope you’re ready for what’s to come, Clockblockers. I know I’m not. Here we go with Timeless Episode 7…
Choices Have Consequences
And Wyatt is learning that the hard way.
Last week we saw Lucy take her bottle of vodka into Flynn’s room seeking some much needed companionship. This week we see Lucy leaving Flynn’s room after their night of drinking; and so does Wyatt. When Flynn enters the shared bathroom later and Wyatt goes macho man telling Flynn to stay away from her, my immediate reaction was anger. Who does Wyatt think he is? He has no right to demand that. There’s nothing between him and Lucy anymore. He chose Jessica.
I actually had to pause the episode and remind myself that I like Wyatt. That Wyatt is only human and not perfect. He never got the chance to fully process his feelings for Lucy before Jessica came back and now’s he’s trying to find a balance between the two that doesn’t exist. He’s allowed to make mistakes and he’s allowed to be confused. But Wyatt, you don’t get to have them both and you’re an idiot for not realizing that Lucy would move on.
I love how Flynn didn’t assure Wyatt that nothing happened between him and Lucy. He just shut him down, reminding Wyatt that Lucy is not his wife and can make her own decisions. They didn’t sleep together but that’s none of Wyatt’s business and Flynn doesn’t make it his business by telling him that. I’m officially firmly on Team Flynn thanks to this.
A Step Forward
I was angry when Wyatt confronted Flynn. I was LIVID when he confronted Lucy. There were a lot of nasty things that went through my mind that I won’t repeat. Let’s just say that my “Wyatt’s human and allowed to make mistakes” reminder from earlier went completely out the window. But watching Lucy shut him down was even more satisfying than when Flynn did it. And when she did it again later in the episode, when she finally admitted how much Wyatt had hurt her and how hard everything has been on her, I wanted to praise all the gods that have ever existed.
This is what Lucy needed to do. She needed to get angry. Ever since Jessica came back Lucy has been dancing around her emotions pretending that everything is normal and she’s okay because of the work her and Wyatt have to do together. But everything is not normal and she is not okay. Bottling it up and pretending otherwise was self-sacrificing and Lucy has done enough of that. It’s past time for Lucy Preston to stand up for her self and that’s exactly what she did this week. It was glorious!
This is just the first of many steps that Lucy needs to take on her half of the Lyatt journey. Now that she’s stood up for herself she can start down the to road to realization that she needs to fight for herself and her happiness.

I get that you are scared. You are allowed to be scared; I would be terrified if someone who’s been having visions that keep coming true told me that I was going to die. But being scared doesn’t mean you get to take your fear out ON YOUR GIRLFRIEND WHO IS ALSO SCARED. Stop yelling at her and stop making her feel guilty for telling you what she saw when you asked her to. Stop shutting her down when she says she wants to figure this out together! AND DAMMIT WHEN SHE STORMS OUT OF THE ROOM GO AFTER HER!

When the team splits up in 1919, testosterone and jealous fueled Wyatt makes sure that Lucy is with him far way from Flynn – leaving Flynn and Rufus working together. (Team Flufus every episode please!) Rufus is still not comfortable teaming with the man who tried to kill him, until Flynn makes a joking remark that he promises not to kill Rufus this mission causing the lightbulb in Rufus’ head to go off. Flynn won’t kill him this mission because that’s not what Jiya saw. Rufus is going to die in the 1800s with cowboys not in 1919 with suffragettes. Guess those visions aren’t so bad now eh Rufus?
Cocky Rufus may just be my favourite Rufus.
Clearly he agrees with me about the visions because when the team returns home he apologizes to Jiya and the two actually talk instead of fight. They still don’t know what to do about Rufus’ death sentence but whatever they do they’ll do it together. And I think it’s time for them to let the rest of the team in on her visions. They’ve been keeping them a secret for long enough.
I Did Not See That Coming
Emma, unshakeably loyal Emma. Apparently she’s not as unshakeable as I would have bet on. There’s a line that even she won’t cross and that line is women’s suffrage. When Rittenhouse goes back to 1919 to kill the 19th Amendment, Emma temporarily casts her loyalties aside and offers the Time Team her help in taking out the sleeper. A one mission truce. A suspicious offer until Flynn gets her to reveal why she wants to sabotage this particular mission – a drunk abusive father and a brave mother who was only able to get her and her daughter away because the women of history demanded equal rights and got them. No women’s suffrage no equal rights. No equal rights and Emma and her mother are just property unable to escape their living nightmare. Pretty solid reason for wanting Rittenhouse to fail this time around.
I’ve wanted Emma’s backstory since that hospital fight with Wyatt. Be careful what you wish for. I was very happy in my “I hate Emma but love her shoes” bubble. My bubble has now been burst and I’m trying to adjust to my new “Emma’s still a bitch with great shoes but now I understand her and part of me sympathizes with her” bubble. But that’s the great thing about this show – even the villains are relatable. Timeless doesn’t do two dimensional characters. Nothing is ever just black or white, but that’s especially true with people. People are complicated and layered. The writers get this and strive to make sure that the characters they’ve created are complicated and layered. And they are so damn good at it.
Neither her traumatic childhood or taking out the 1919 sleeper and saving Lucy excuse the horrible things she’s done though. Maybe I can still hate her in peace.
I Did See That Coming
YES, I CALLED IT!! I TOTALLY CALLED IT!! I’m a genius with the gift of foresight! Or the Timeless writers are very good at what they do. Either way I TOTALLY CALLED IT!!
You may remember back in my review for “The Salem Witch Hunt” I made a brief reference to Nicholas and Emma. Nothing in depth but at that point nothing in depth was happening between them, there was just that small flutter of something. That small flutter became a full blown thing this episode. It starts with Nicholas and Emma discussing Rittenhouse’s new ‘rustic’ safehouse and Nicholas’ confession of growing attached to certain modern comforts. From the way he’s looking at Emma you know he’s not talking about cell phones and drive-thru. He tells Emma he’s made the decision that she’s just acting as pilot this mission, no dirty work. She’s too important. She’s the only one he trusts. He wants her to come back to him safely. Were this any other couple it would be a very ‘awe’ moment, but this is Rittenhouse’s top baddies so no awe for them.
Nicholas is not happy that the 1919 mission failed but Emma plays it off as she barely managed to escape. She changes the subject to future missions but Nicholas kisses her instead. Nimma is a thing. Or are they?
There are a few moments where Nicholas is looking at her and I get the feeling that this is all a ploy. Rittenhouse recruited her after all, they know her family history. It’s entirely possibly the ‘pilot only’ thing was Nicholas’ way of making sure Emma didn’t interfere with the suffragist sleeper. The kiss may just be a way of keeping her on a short leash now because he knows she did interfere. If that is the case, Emma is way too smart to not see it for what it really is. Which means she’s playing her own game right back. Either way I’m curious as to where this Nimma thing is going. Continue reading…
We All Saw That Coming
Connor, with help from Jiya and Jessica spends this episode sorting through the debris that Wyatt and Agent Christopher were able to salvage from Rittenhouse’s base. It looks like nothing but a burned out mess but Connor tackles his impossible task anyway. Now this is what I love about Timeless, the individual missions mirror the bigger picture. When Connor gets lucky and manages to find the needle in his haystack he admits to Jiya that he didn’t expect to find anything but you always have to keep fighting, even the losing battles. It’s this comment that makes Jiya realize that she can’t just give up and let her visions tear her and Rufus apart. She needs to keep fighting too.
As important as that realization is going forward it dims in comparison to what information Connor’s find reveals – a photo of Jessica.
It takes him a while to access the data and only Agent Christopher is around when he does but there we have it. Concrete proof that Jessica has a connection to Rittenhouse. If she’s a knowing member playing the team or an unwitting pawn in Rittenhouse’s game isn’t included in the data Connor salvaged. Agent Christopher decides it’s best to not share this information with the team until she knows exactly what it means.
One thing is for sure though, this is just the newest piece of a large and complicated puzzle.
Here’s hoping that puzzle shows Rittenhouse’s demise for good and a happy Lyatt!
Grace Humiston
One of my favourite things about Timeless has been a constant since season 1, and that is Lucy’s awe every time she meets one of her historical idols. Her reactions to everyone she meets normally mirror what mine would be. Grace Humiston is no exception. I felt Lucy’s disappointed when Grace wasn’t exactly what she had imagined. It was crushing to see Grace unwilling to help her fellow women despite knowing what a struggle it is for a woman to break into “the old boys club”. Lucy calling Grace out on it was just one of many Lucy highlights this episode and it was the push Grace needed to see her complacency made her part of the group keeping women down. If not for that push, Grace likely would never have given the speech that changed the President’s mind and saved the 19th Amendment.
And what a speech it was.
Timeless is brilliant in how it can take moments in history and make them relevant to the world today.
This episode is a reminder of just how far we’ve come but also of how much farther there is to go. Lucy’s words to Grace are still true today. There will come a time when everyone will be faced with the same choice Grace was – stay silent and be part of the problem or rise up and use your voice for change.
That’s a Bit of a Stretch
I do have one small complaint about this episode and that is Alice Paul. This is actually something that has bothered me since season one with Benedict Arnold, but Alice was my breaking point. Anyone with any knowledge of the Women’s Suffrage and Women’s Rights movements knows the name Alice Paul. She was a driving force in both. Alice does make an appearance in this episode but it’s a brief one as she is killed by the Rittenhouse sleeper. I get that Grace stepping up to fill her role is supposed to be what keeps history the same but taking Alice Paul out of history should have changed something. She’s too important to be able to be erased without it affecting something. This is television and we except it to take some liberties but this one just didn’t sit well with me.
One Last Thing
We are in the final lap of this season with just 3 episodes left and a renewal is still up in the air. Now more than ever it’s important to make sure the network hears your voice. Watch live if you can, if you can’t, watch within 3 days of the original airing to help kick the ratings up. If you watch live considering watching again in that 3 day period as well. Live Tweet the episode. Get your friends, family, co-workers, and strangers on the street watching. Timeless is too good of a show to let go. It deserves a season 3.
