Timeless Episode 3 Review

OH.MY.GOD. DID THAT JUST HAPPEN? DID WE SERIOUSLY JUST SEE THAT?

The answer, my dear Clockblockers, is yes that totally did just happen. We seriously did just see that! If you are at all like me after I watched “Hollywoodland” for the first time you are probably sitting there with your mouth hanging open in shock. Don’t worry, that shock will wear off shortly. Then you’ll enter into the “screaming, throwing your phone, stomping around angrily, and, in my case, slamming your laptop closed” stage. Once you’re able to breathe again let’s work through the emotional rollercoaster that the Timeless writers just put us through.

THAT LYATT SCENE!!!

Normally I try to keep things in chronological order with my reviews, but there is no way that is happening this week. I HAVE to talk about that Lyatt moment first because HOLY CRAP! The teaser last week said “the moment you’ve been waiting for.” Did Timeless ever deliver and then some! I know you all want me to dive right into that, and believe me we will get there, but first we need to talk about that perfect build up.

Let’s start with Lucy’s little performance at the party and the way Wyatt was looking at her. Did anyone else feel their heart nearly stop in their chest as he watched her? The look in his eyes and the little smile on his face said it all. There is absolutely no denying his feelings for her now. Someone give Matt Lanter all the awards, the man has earned them! While you’re at it – toss a Grammy to Abigail Spencer.

Lovebirds. Science, acting, correctly interpreting sexual tension between two people she’s just met, Hedy Lamarr really was genius. Sidenote: I’m really glad Rufus decided to interfere and change history there. It’s what she deserved.

Back to Lyatt. I’m fairly certain that they were always end game, but on the off chance they weren’t I think it’s safe to say that it was the chemistry between Spencer and Lanter that made them so. You only need to watch that poolside scene to see it. The side looks, friendly teasing, genuine laughter, nervous flirting, the air was sizzling between them. You can be the best actors in the world and not be able to fake that kind of chemistry. It’s either something you have or you don’t and boy do they have it. You add that chemistry with the great writing and you have a perfect scene.

AND THEN SOME!

It was no secret that Lyatt was going to happen in some form in this episode. The entire teaser for the episode was Lyatt build up. I don’t think any of us were expecting Lyatt to happen though. I certainly wasn’t. But the moment they walked into that room and Wyatt grabbed Lucy’s arm I knew, this was it. They were going there. There was no turning back from that point and no one around to interrupt this time.

Timeless officially established Lyatt as a thing in just the 3rd episode of the second season and I’m okay with that. Some shows and couples need the slow burn and long build. Not this show. Not this couple. After everything that Lucy and Wyatt have been through both before they met and after it makes sense that these two would jump. Life is short and things can change in an instant. They both have personal experience with that and aren’t the type to sit back and let life pass them by. They grab life and hang on, they fight for what they want and what they love and they do not give up. Which is why they are perfect for each other.

Also I’m pretty sure the writers are using Rufus as a way to get the fans’ thoughts into the show. Thanks for that.

The Pressure Point

Now that we have, somewhat, gotten our breathing back under control, let’s talk about what else happened this episode because it wasn’t all just fun times with Lyatt.

This week Rittenhouse seeks to change history by bribing William Randolph Hearst into publishing a weekly Rittenhouse written column in all of his newspapers. No questions asked. Print was the only source of news and information back then and Hearst was one of the most powerful men in the business. He had papers all over the country. A weekly column would give Rittenhouse a very large platform to spread their propaganda. In return for this little bit of power Rittenhouse’s agent in 1941 would steal the only copy of the unfinished film “Citizen Kane” and prevent it from ever being shown to the public. “Citizen Kane” is loosely based on Hearst’s life and not something he wants getting out. Don’t worry Wyatt I’ve never seen it either.

It was a different feel this week from last week because this time around we were shown a Rittenhouse agent who was completely dedicated to the cause. Unlike Ryan Millerson, Lucas Calhoun here showed no signs of second thoughts in regards to his mission. He didn’t argue when he was ordered to return to 2018 once he completed his job in 1941, despite the good life he had built for himself. He didn’t hesitate to kill someone who was in the wrong place at the wrong time and he was willing to risk, and ultimately sacrifice, his life for Rittenhouse. It takes a very deep conviction to the cause you are fighting for to be able to do those things. That kind of conviction makes for very dangerous opponents. Here’s hoping the Time Team doesn’t underestimate them, because I think I have been.

And the Oscar Goes To

Not Rufus Carlin, despite his best efforts. It was really fun watching Rufus take charge and pretend to Langston Hughes, even if the charade didn’t fool everyone.

Fresh Prince, Rufus? Really?

I was a little worried that with Lucy and Wyatt getting closer and forming a relationship which doesn’t include Rufus that his character would be pushed into the background. I’m really relieved to see that won’t be the case. Pushing Rufus out to turn things into the Lucy and Wyatt Show would be a big mistake. Timeless works so well because of the dynamic between these three characters.

You Should Have Told Me That

Back at The Bunker, Agent Christopher is finally let in on the secret of what’s been happening to Jiya. She’s understandably pissed that she’s been kept in the dark and demands Jiya see a doctor about the seizures. A demand Jiya refuses.

Following the pattern of revealing painful family history, Jiya explains that when her father saw a doctor for his back pain it turned out he had cancer. He died just months later. If there’s something wrong with her she would rather not know.

Probably a good thing she feels that way because Connor Mason has been keeping some secrets of his own. It turns out that while Mason Industries was running its first tests on the Lifeboat, two of its test pilots also ended up suffering from what I’ve dubbed “time sickness.” Neither of their fates are happy ones.

Jiya does end up seeing a doctor. Did you really think that Agent Christopher wouldn’t get her way? No cause of the seizures is found, she’s perfectly healthy and the heart murmur she’s had her whole life has gone away. While it seems like a happy miracle I’m not so sure and from the look on Connor’s face, he agrees with me. There’s more to this story arc and pretty soon the small snippets revealed each week aren’t going to be enough. I’m going to need an entire episode focusing on Jiya and what is happening to her.

The Enemy of My Enemy

FLYNN IS BACK!!! The price of his information is freedom and Lucy is able to convince Agent Christopher that it is a price they need to pay. They busted Flynn out of prison and brought him to The Bunker to help in the fight against Rittenhouse. That is going to make for some interesting living arrangements.

THIS IS WHY WE CAN’T HAVE NICE THINGS!!!

Happy happy episode! Lucy and Wyatt take the next step in their relationship, and then jump ahead a few more. Rittenhouse’s devious plan was foiled. Flynn is no longer wearing that hideous prison jumpsuit. Lucy is wearing one of Wyatt’s shirts. Things are good so that’s a wrap. Everyone can go to bed now. Right? Right? WRONG! Where’s the fun in that?

I’m 100% convinced that the conversation in the writer’s room went something like this:

“We should make Wyatt and Lucy hook up this episode.”

“No we can’t do that! It’s way too soon!”

“It’s what the fans want.”

“Still too soon. Let’s wait a bit.”

“How about this, we hook them up and make all the shippers go crazy. Then we bring back Wyatt’s dead wife to screw things up!”

“You’re a genius! Let’s do it!”

Yupp, Jessica is definitely not dead. Wyatt is definitely happy to see her alive. And this is definitely not good for Lyatt.

Thanks, Timeless writers. I think I hate you now.
