The Unicorn Episode 5
This episode splits the cast where Wade is with his girls most of the time and his friends are off together. With their four kids, Ben and Michelle find themselves volunteering for all sorts of activities like coaching soccer or field trips. They notice that Forrest and Delia don’t volunteer for anything even though they have one child. They use the excuse that they both work, but so do Ben and Michelle. Delia says she will start to do more volunteering, and Forrest adds in the future. When the opportunity of volunteering becomes available, Ben and Michelle tell Forrest and Delia that they get to run the snack bar at the soccer game.
Delia takes one look at the snack bar and is disgusted by all the food. Since she is a doctor, she feels that the kids shouldn’t be eating any of the processed foods there. But she does her duty of volunteering, and serves the food. She and Forrest are having difficulty; it isn’t as easy as it looks. Forrest can’t get the nacho cheese to work and Delia still can’t get over the unhealthy food options. Delia storms off because she can’t serve her patients this food. She comes back with healthy options like kale chips, but the kids are not happy.
When Ben and Michelle ask Forrest and Delia how the snack bar went, they lie and say it was great, but it’s just not for them. Well Ben and Michelle went ahead and signed then up to cover it once a month.
Wade and The Girls
At open house at the girl’s school, Natalie signs up to do several activities. Grace doesn’t sign up to do anything. Wade encourages her to do the play, since it is Little Shop of Horrors. He even volunteers to help with the sets. Grace agrees and gets the lead role. When Wade hears her sing in the rehearsal, he notices how nervous she was and didn’t really perform well. He asks the play director, Mr. Kinsey, why he would give Grace the lead, and he feels that she has been through a lot this past year and wants her to feel good about herself. Wade strongly disagrees and feels this is not the way to do it.
Wade talks to his friends about how the should deal with this situation, Ben suggests lying and telling her she’s great. Wade doesn’t think that’s the right answer. This is the second time we see Ben suggesting to lie to the kids and both times Wade refuses. It’s refreshing to see Wade is open and honest with his kids. Delia suggests offering for her to quit, because usually she will see it through on her own.
When Grace comes home and tells Wade about the kids at school saying she was awful, she asks her father if it’s true. He doesn’t reply.
He tries Delia’s method of offering to quit. Grace gets excited and says yes! That plan backfired. Wade tells her that she should see it through and when the time for the play comes, she did an amazing job.
Thoughts
This was the first episode where one of the stories didn’t relate to Wade dating. It focused primarily on family and community. Volunteering isn’t easy, and it takes up quite a bit of time, but it’s great to see Ben and Michelle there for the kids all the time. Even though their first time was rough, I’m sure Forrest and Delia will enjoy volunteering as well. I hope we get to revisit this in a future episode.
I enjoyed the scene with Wade and Grace, where he explains how difficult it is being dad and ‘mom’ too. He’s learning along the way and getting better at it. Grace realizes things can be scary and challenging, but don’t give up and try your best. I wish they took a moment during this scene to stress that what her friends are saying about her is not important and she shouldn’t focus on that at all. But overall, this was another great episode!
