The Unicorn Episode 2
The episode starts off with Wade picking up Michelle’s kids. Noah asks about his date tonight. This is a great way to introduce the fact that he has another date and that Michelle likes to talk quite a bit, without regard for who may be listening.
We also saw this in the first episode, so this will probably be a character trait of hers.
It’s a date…
Wade is on his date with Lizzie. They are enjoying conversation over a meal at a restaurant, but Wade doesn’t have a clue who she is talking about. She mentions the name Boston Rob, from Survivor, but Wade thinks she is referring to the band. First date failed.
More Soccer
While chatting with Ben and Forrest at the soccer field, Ben doesn’t know who Boston Rob is either. Forrest is surprised at both of them, rattling off every Survivor series there has been. He seems to be a fan. They try to tell him that the first date was a disaster, but Wade still made another date with Lizzie because ‘she was really nice’.
While talking with Delia and Michelle, Wade tries to explain to them that first dates are always disappointing and the next one will be different. Michelle doesn’t think that nice is everything, and that he shouldn’t go on a second date. He starts to get alerts on his phone about Lime, but he doesn’t even know what that is.
The ladies inform him that they are scooters the kids ride on. As a doctor, Delia takes a more concerned approach finding that most kids don’t use helmets while riding them. Grace comes into the kitchen and Wade asks her to cancel her Lime account. She forgot that he still gets alerts on his phone. Discipline is still tough for him.
Take 2
He goes on the second date with Lizzie and it ends up being worse than the first date. She still texts him that she had fun and sends him a request to be friends on social media. Everyone is telling him that he doesn’t have to respond and doesn’t have to accept the request, but Wade feels that would be rude.
Now he gets alerts of her posts and requests to play online games from her. Wade is in constant contact with her and he feels like he is drowning. Forrest and Ben suggest not to like the posts, but he doesn’t want to be mean. He feels that they have no idea what it’s like out there now.
While Ben is talking to Michelle, he suggests that she asks her sister, Meg, to help Wade out. She is experienced with dating apps and has been on them for awhile. Meg comes over to one of their gatherings, and offers advice to Wade. He tells Meg that he accepted her Facebook friend request and plays Boggle with her all the time. She feels that it’s too late, they are already in a relationship. He doesn’t want to just drop her because then she would be alone, just like he was. Wade leaves when he gets a text that Grace’s bike got a flat, even though she was supposed to be home.
Darn social media
When he goes to pick her up, she starts off by telling him that she was responsible in wearing a helmet and tries to explain that she wanted to take a picture for Instagram. She knows that it was a stupid thing to do, but she just wants to feel normal, because everyone else is doing it. Wade understands, since his way of getting back to normal was to date again. He realizes that he’s stuck in a relationship now, but Grace points out that if he’s unhappy, it makes the girls unhappy. Wade brings her over to take the picture for her Instagram account. Even he gets in on the fun to take a few pictures.
When they get back to the house, Wade agrees that it is time to end the relationship and breaks up with Lizzie in his own pleasant and charming way. She is fine with the break up and is already out on another date anyway.
Thoughts
The best thing about this show is that it feels like these characters are having real conversations. It doesn’t feel like actors reading lines. These are conversations that audiences have probably had with their friends, neighbors, coworkers.
Audiences can relate to the dating scenes or maybe the parenting scenes. I have to admit, I had no idea who Boston Rob was. Sorry! But these are the scenes make us laugh the most. It’s welcoming to see this ensemble cast bring humor to my television every week.
