The Purge Episode 7: Lovely Dark and Deep

An unexpected intruder, David gets what’s coming, and pancakes–all on Episode 7 of The Purge.

Miguel and Penelope

After escaping from the Carnival of Flesh, brother and sister make into a wooded area. Safe for a few moments, they finally have time to talk. You’d think Penelope would be grateful to her brother for saving her, but no, she’s upset with him. She tells him that she was ready to go home. Miguel apologizes for not being there for her, and then Penelope steps into a booby trap. Miguel is able to free her just in the nick of time as Purgers are closing in on them. I kind of don’t get this thing with Penelope—if she wants to die so bad, why not just stop trying so hard to escape? The two head off together for pancakes (maybe), because there’s nothing like pancakes after surviving Purge night, am I right?

Jenna and Rick (and Lila)

So, last episode ended with a beaten Lila banging on Jenna and Rick’s door, begging to be let in. Rick and Jenna manage to save Lila from a Purger (barely), and lock the house back down, but not before a hooded intruder slides under the door, unbeknownst to the three.

Jenna sees to Lila’s wounds, and gets her tucked into bed. Later, Rick suggests to Jenna that Lila may be hiding something, because her story changed a couple of times. I noticed that, too, and I think Rick is right. I think Lila may have been the one behind the slaughter. Maybe she wanted her parents dead? But then again, wouldn’t she have warned Jenna, if she knew the gunmen were on the way?

And now our hooded (and armed) intruder busts in—it’s the creepy next door neighbor. He’s pissed off because Rick and Jenna haven’t been the perfect neighbors, so he’s decided to kill them on Purge night. Lila saves the day when she stabs him in the head. Jenna is traumatized by the whole thing, and goes to sleep on the sofa, between Rick and Lila. Lila slips her hand into Jenna’s, and Rick notices. You know, I wasn’t liking Rick very much, but I’m starting to take his side in all this. I’m really beginning to think that Lila is playing Jenna and she’s way more dangerous than I thought.

Jane (and Joe)

While David continued to be the pig that he is (very well played by William Baldwin), a bound up Jane has flashbacks that reveal why she needed to forgive her mother. It seems that when she was younger, Jane’s mom pushed her to rely on her body, rather than her brains, to get her ahead. She entered Jane in beauty pageants to get scholarships, which makes no sense as Jane’s grades had already guaranteed her a scholarship. Jane finally stood up to her mom and refused to dress the way her mother wanted her to for an interview.

Now, Jane is tormented by the sick and disgusting David, and seemingly her only hope is the Matron Saints. She convinces Anya to take their card out of her back pocket and call them. Little did Jane know, help was about to arrive. Our badass Joe shows up with his gun and saves Jane. Before she leaves, she sets the other women free, and oh yeah, Jane shoots David. I don’t think I’ve ever been so glad to see a character die. You go, Jane!

As Jane and Joe head out in his van, the Matron Saints arrive to wrap up.

I just want to say, for all the people who gave up on this show early on, you were so wrong! Seriously, you are missing what has turned out to be an incredible ride—and it’s not over yet! The Purge returns October 23rd, 10/9 C, on USA Network.

Thoughts on Episode 7? What do you think about Lila? Is Rick right about her? And what about Jane and Joe? Anyone else hoping they’ll team up? By the way, I still want to know how Joe’s app told him that Jane needed saving and where she was. And here’s something else: was Jane’s mom right? Is a woman’s body the only way she can get ahead in this world? I think not, I think for all the bad in the world, for all the jerks like David, there is still more good and decent,  but I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
