The Lincoln Lawyer showrunner Ted Humphrey talks about Jerry’s plans.
The storytelling in The Lincoln Lawyer is very satisfying with big wins, twists and reveals in the final episodes. There are also a staggering number of details that viewers sift through much like Mickey with files spread out on his desk.
Mickey talks to Izzy about a safe cracker and “that magic moment when the gears click into place”. Viewers enjoy that same feeling when Mickey wows the jury with Jerry’s magic bullet and when he knocks Judge Holder off her pedestal. We relish in the glow of those big victories with a collective fist pump. We feel like we have uncovered those important details alongside of Mickey.
You may even find yourself revisiting the events of Jerry’s final days after key information is uncovered by Mickey and his capable staff. We sort of have to work backwards with the answers to think about Jerry’s original plan and how it evolved.

The bribe
Was Jerry definitely the one who paid the bribe? Should we assume it was his idea originally? If so, was Trevor telling the truth about not knowing the details?
Ted: “Jerry paid the bribe. He was approached about it by Judge Holder’s husband. Trevor did not know the details and didn’t know who was behind it.”
The reason
The reason for Jerry’s murder – was it because Judge Holder knew he was talking to the feds? Would she care about a continuance since the bribe money was already paid either way?
Ted: “The continuance was evidence that Jerry had gotten cold feet and was talking to the feds.”
The change
Did Jerry indeed have a change of heart and want to win legitimately with the Wyms gunshot residue finding? The bribe money would still be gone, but could he technically avoid breaking the law if there was a new jury pool without McSweeney that deliberated?
Ted: “Correct. Plus, he was talking to the feds and maybe had made some deal with them where he could avoid prosecution.”
The stash
Why did Jerry stash Wyms?
Ted: “Stashing Wyms enabled Jerry to hide the ball on all the gunshot residue evidence so he could spring it on the prosecution at trial. If he had simply put that evidence into discovery, the prosecution could have prepared for it and maybe found a way around it. Highly unethical.”
Much like Michael Connelly’s source material, The Lincoln Lawyer series draws the audience in with a compelling story that gains momentum throughout the season. Viewers earn the big payoffs by paying attention to details while Mickey juggles his caseload and family commitments.
