- Mickey’s strategy for Lisa’s defense is to point the finger at someone else. He has his eyes on Alex Grant and wants to get him on the stand.
- Alex Grant owns a construction company that has done business with Mitchell Bondurant. Grant has ties to organized crime. Bondurant attempted to extort money from Grant. Bondurant accused Grant of not completing work on projects and demanded refunds, otherwise he would report the issue to his lender, who by law has to report any “suspicious activity” to the feds.
- Izzy has been waiting for her girlfriend Ray to provide her half of the deposit for the lease on a dance studio. Ray has not been sober as long as Izzy, and Mickey has warned Izzy to be careful.

- Mickey represented Terrell Coleman’s daughter Angelica not long ago when she was accused of vandalism. Angelica painted black over the pink exterior wall of a clothing store.
- Sam Scales is one of Mickey’s recurring clients. Sam has a history of allegedly creating fake fundraisers and illegally accepting donations for profit.
- Tony Walsh is a fellow defense attorney who offered to be Mickey’s second chair in the Trevor Elliott case. Mickey did not take Tony up on that offer, but he did obtain some lab information from Tony last season.
- Henry Dahl is the podcaster who bailed Lisa out of jail. He is promoting a tv crime documentary about Lisa. Mickey tries to put a stop to it with the contract Lisa signed to give the rights to her story to Mickey. Unfortunately, Mickey finds the contract missing from the Lincoln just before two men give a serious beating.
Mickey survives the assault in the parking garage, but he looks lifeless lying on the ground next to his Lincoln. Izzy has a GPS tracker on the vehicle and goes to the Lincoln when Mickey does not return her calls. Izzy sees Mickey on the ground next to his SUV. She calls 911 and does not leave Mickey’s side.
Maggie and Hayley are at the hospital waiting for Mickey to wake up. We learn that he has a broken arm and damage to his liver. Mickey figures out that Ray took money to steal Lisa’s file from the Lincoln. Since Izzy is the only other person who has keys to his car, Mickey surmises that Ray took the keys to steal the file for Henry in exchange for cash for her half of the dance studio deposit. Izzy feels guilty and breaks things off with Ray. Mickey does not blame Izzy.
The first order of business is the Lincoln Lawyer getting better so he can return to his casework, namely Lisa Trammell’s case. Meanwhile, Mickey enlists the help of eager defense attorney Tony Walsh to pick up the slack on his caseload.
Mickey tells Cisco that friends of Detective Lankford have been assigned to investigate the garage beating. Based on their association with Lankford, Mickey assumes they will not put a lot of effort into the investigation. Haller and Lankford have a troubled history.
Mickey has a nice support system while in the hospital. Hayley and Maggie tend to him and keep him entertained playing Monopoly. Lisa brings homemade chicken soup. Lorna provides bites from Mickey’s favorite restaurants and uncovers helpful information about Alex Grant.
Lorna learns that Alex Grant has an obsession with finding the fifth in a series of 5 paintings by his favorite artist. Mickey wants to leverage this desire to serve Grant with a subpoena.
Mickey apologizes to Lorna for suggesting it was her fault the file was missing. Lorna says she is sorry also.
Mickey believes it was Henry Dahl who paid Ray to steal the Lisa Trammell file from the Lincoln. Mickey’s contract with Lisa for her life rights is impeding Henry’s podcast about Lisa. He tells Izzy to carefully bag the cash that Ray gave her for the studio deposit. Wear gloves. Mickey believes Henry’s fingerprints will still be on the bills. Izzy follows his instructions and holds on to the cash until further notice.
Meanwhile, Mickey tasks Cisco with looking for any connection between Henry Dahl and Alex Grant.
Izzy and Cisco approach longtime client Sam Scales. Sam’s expertise in setting up fraudulent websites might be the key to luring Alex Grant out of hiding. They find Sam running a scam called Pets for Vets outside a pet store. They offer to clear his legal bill balance with Haller and Associates if he creates a website for them.
Sam agrees to create a website advertising the sale of the painting Alex Grant wants. Of course, they do not really have the painting, but Alex Grant does not know that. Grant responds to the website and makes an appointment to authenticate the painting. Upon arrival, Grant is greeted by Lorna and Izzy who offer champagne and conversation as they escort him to the draped “painting”. Grant pulls the drape aside to find a subpoena pinned to a board. Lorna announces that Grant has “been served”. Grant immediately calls this entrapment. Cisco steps inside and advises Grant that they are not law enforcement. Mission accomplished. Mickey’s defense hinges on showing Grant’s motive to murder Bondurant.
As expected, Grant’s attorney files a motion to quash the subpoena served to him. Mickey asks Lorna to offer the Los Angeles Times an exclusive for bringing their reporters to the hearing.
Judge Median oversees the hearing for the motion to quash the subpoena for Grant. Mickey interviews Grant on the stand. He draws attention to the fact that Grant is in the running to build housing for the 2028 Olympics. He asks Alex Grant to read from the email from Bondurant threatening to report Grant’s suspicious activity. Mickey wants to know what the suspicious activity is. Grant’s lawyer requests a recess to speak with his client.
Grant’s lawyer does not want him to risk saying anything incriminating. He advises him to invoke the 5th Amendment. Grant knows that will only make him look guilty, though. With all the press on site, there could be negative coverage that could put his Olympic bid at risk.
Court is back in session. Grant’s attorney announces that his client is dropping the motion to quash the subpoena. He will appear in court as summoned just as Mickey wanted all along.
Judge Medina calls Haller and prosecutor Freeman to her chambers. She insists that Mickey swiftly show how he thinks Grant is connected to Bondurant’s case. Mickey assures her that he will prove the relevancy of having Grant testify.
Cisco learns that the president of one of Grant’s companies, David Weber, is also an investor in Henry’s podcast. This connects Henry to Grant. Mickey takes the cash to Henry who is meeting with Lisa Trammel. Mickey tells Dahl that his fingerprints are on the cash. Of course, Mickey does not have that confirmation, but he does not need it because Henry does not deny paying Ray for the file. He also manages to get Henry to confess to getting the bail bond money from Weber, too. Henry does, however, deny knowing anything about a plan to beat up Mickey in the garage.
Mickey claims that Grant has been using Henry all along to get information on Lisa’s case. He suggests that Grant is using the information to sabotage Lisa’s case and divert attention away from him as a suspect. It’s a full court press. Mickey now has Henry under his thumb and can ensure his cooperation. Of course, Lisa pleads with Mickey saying she knew nothing about the source of the bail money.
Mickey returns home from the hospital. Izzy agrees to hold his pain medicine only disbursing it as scheduled. Maggie and Hayley are at Mickey’s house to greet him upon arrival. Maggie has cooked and the three of them enjoy dinner together on the deck. Hayley finds a box with her grandfather’s law school ring. She thinks her dad should wear it, but Mickey does not think it suits him.
Hayley goes to bed and the ex-spouses reminisce. They end up in each other’s arms and then in the bedroom for an intimate rendezvous. Mickey is elated the next morning ready to take the family out for pancakes. Then he spots Maggie’s luggage in the living room.
Maggie agrees the night they shared was wonderful but says it will never work long term between them. Also, she does not want Hayley to get hurt. Mickey learns that Maggie has taken a job with the D.A.’s office in San Diego. She and Hayley will be moving to the beach. They will still be close enough for Hayley’s visits. Maggie will make the daily commute to San Diego. Mickey looks crushed as Maggie kisses him goodbye and leaves.
It feels like a switch flips inside of Mickey. He decides to begin wearing his dad’s ring and motors down Sunset Boulevard with confidence. At a stoplight Mickey turns to see phallic graffiti drawn beside his face on a bus stop bench. Mickey laughs as he remembers that Angelica Coleman said her friend Kyle was responsible for these drawings.
Mickey also decides to stop taking his pain medication all together telling Izzy he does not need it. He loses the hope of a future with Maggie but somehow gains renewed confidence in his work. He has the promise of putting Alex Grant in front of a jury now and they just might suspect him over Lisa.

Closing argument: As much as I want to see Mickey’s confidence in court, I wonder if the Lincoln Lawyer is trying to overcompensate for his disappointment about Maggie. Could Alex Grant really be good for Bondurant’s murder? Or do you think Lisa is guilty?
