Let us investigate our case file for The Lincoln Lawyer S2E10 ‘Bury Your Past’.

Refresh your memory:

Breaking News

Everyone is a little nervous about the last day of trial.

Both Mickey and Lisa struggle to pick out their trial outfits. Lisa burns an egg at the restaurant. Even Lorna admits to being nervous, but she still gives Mickey his pre-closing pep talk.

Cisco learns that Walter Kim has likely been ‘disappeared’ when his car is found abandoned.

Mama Elena gets uplifting news. Lorna and Cisco head to the altar.

In the courtroom

Mickey approaches the jury with his closing statement. He paints the prosecution’s case as a “fairytale”. Mickey says the evidence against Lisa appeared with suspicious timing and suggests she was framed. He reminds the jury that many people hated Bondurant and that they should not forget the Eagle Couriers truck that was on site during the time of the murder.

Mickey tells the jury that “people with buried skeletons would do anything to keep them buried.” He claims there are simply too many unanswered questions for anyone to suspect Lisa beyond a reasonable doubt, which is the standard they must consider.

The jury begins deliberation while Mickey and Lisa have a seat outside. Mickey talks about the Gods of Guilt (a reference to another Michael Connelly novel in The Lincoln Lawyer series). It is not long before Lorna calls Mickey over to her. The jury has reached a verdict and they must return to the courtroom.

The jury finds Lisa not guilty, and the defense team cheers in celebration.

Check with my office

Back at the office, Lorna breaks out a bottle of champagne and something non-alcoholic, too. Mickey receives a call from Lisa. She invites him to a victory celebration at the restaurant. Mickey is very tired and declines the invitation.

Cisco calls the team to the conference room. He shares police photos showing a telescoping mirror found in Walter Kim’s abandoned vehicle.  While it is normal for a building inspector to have one of these, Walter’s mirror is missing a piece of glass similar in size to the one found at the scene of Bondurant’s murder.

So, how could Kim have reached the top of Bondurant’s head? Cisco demonstrates with Lorna’s compact makeup mirror. He reflects light to the ceiling using the mirror. Winston barks at the flashes of light that appear on the ceiling. A similar display would have likely caused Bondurant to look up making the back of his head accessible.

Lorna receives a call from the wedding venue saying the space has been double-booked. The next available opening is not until next year. Lorna is so disappointed. Izzy signals Cisco to go talk in the other room.

Back at home, Mickey hears a knock at the door. Lisa arrives with dinner. She was not enjoying the celebration at the restaurant without Mickey, and she seems eager to jump in the sack with him. Mickey advises her to terminate their legal contract first. Lisa “fires” Mickey and they rush to the bedroom.

Family Ties

Elena tells Mickey that she is proud of him. She also has good news of her own. She booked the role for which she auditioned. The project is filming in Calgary and Elena needs to go pack and head out of town. She feels certain her agent will come crawling back.

Mickey plans a day with Hayley at Venice Beach. He goes to the office to work a little before their outing. He finds a package leaning against the door. The package contains a check from Henry Dahl with initial proceeds from the podcast. It also includes an invitation for Mickey to be a guest on the podcast.

The next arrival is Andy Freeman with a funny gift for Mickey. It is a mug that says, “Number One Lawyer”. The two attorneys pledge to see each other in the courtroom again. Andy also shares news that there is Mitchell Bondurant’s blood on Walter Kim’s boots. Also, the shard of glass from the crime scene matches the missing piece of Kim’s inspector’s mirror.

Mickey and Hayley enjoy conversation as they walk in Venice Beach. The summer is coming to a close and Hayley will return to school. She reminds her dad that they will see each other on weekends. Mickey pauses as he listens to the sounds of the area – a street musician, weight machines clanging and the surf pounding against the sand. Suddenly, Mickey recalls the phone call from Jeff Trammell. Were these the sounds he heard over the phone? Was Jeff in Venice Beach all this time and not really in Mexico?

Mickey places a call to Cisco and researches René Morales’ social media account. He pauses at an old photo of waiters lined up. One of them is Jeff Trammel or is it really someone else?

How does your garden grow?

Mickey confronts Lisa while she is tending to her garden. She can tell he is upset. He tells her that some things were not adding up.

              1. Why would she not sell her restaurant for millions and relocate somewhere else?
              2. Why would she not put up the restaurant as collateral for the bail bond?
              3. Why does she become angry when people bring up Jeff’s name?

He asks Lisa where Jeff is. Once again, she claims she does not know. Mickey looks down at her garden and realizes that Jeff must be buried there. He recalls Lisa’s comment about Jeff not being a fan of cilantro. Now she grows cilantro where he is buried. She is unable to sell or risk losing her home because a new owner might dig up the garden and find Jeff.

Jeff would get half of the proceeds if Lisa sold the restaurant and home. He would not have just left that all behind. Lisa becomes frantic and begins citing abuse from Jeff. Mickey leaves and returns to the Lincoln where Lorna waits. Police cars are there. He tells Lorna that as a defense attorney he cannot reach out to the police. That’s okay, she reports. She is not yet an attorney, and then we see Detective Griggs. That is who she called.

Make it official

Let’s get to that wedding! We see Lorna and Cisco descend the steps of the courthouse having just exchanged their vows. Cisco says he is taking Lorna to brunch and blindfolds her for a surprise.

It is brunch, but it is at Izzy’s dance studio and friends are there to celebrate with them. Winston is wearing a handsome bowtie that Mickey selected for him. With Izzy’s help, they were still able to have the big wedding celebration they hoped for.

Izzy gives the keys to the Lincoln back to Mickey. She will continue working hours in the law office, though, especially while Lorna and Cisco go on their honeymoon.

Mickey plans to spend the evening with Hayley but is reminded that she has plans with friends. Hayley heads out and Mickey soon follows.

Later at the reception, Lorna shares one of her “gut feelings” with Izzy. She tells Izzy that she thinks Lisa arranged for the two men to beat up Mickey in the parking garage. She claims that Lisa probably hoped Mickey would assume it was Alex Grant that engineered the assault thereby keeping Grant on Mickey’s mind as an alternate suspect.

‘Legal’ Consult

Mickey joins Legal Siegel for dinner. Legal warns Mickey to not allow his career to take over his life and steal time from family and friends. He also warns Mickey to be wary of Alex Grant who may want to get rid of Mickey the way he likely did with Walter Kim.

When Mickey heads to his car, a black sedan zooms toward him almost running him over. Mickey calls Izzy to find out what kind of car Alex arrived in the night of the fake art showing. Izzy recalls a dark colored sedan.

Izzy also tells Mickey about a new client. Julian Lacosse. She shares a few details, and he says he will check on things tomorrow.

The road ahead

Of course, Mickey cannot wait until tomorrow. He heads to the police station and speaks with Julian. Julian shares that he has been accused of murdering his friend Giselle Dallinger, the same friend that told him to call Mickey Haller if he ever ran into trouble. But Mickey does not know a Giselle Dallinger.

Mickey goes to the coroner’s office to see the body. Giselle Dallinger is actually Gloria Dayton aka Glory Days. What is going on? How sad that Glory Days has been killed. We all hoped she would get that fresh start she spoke of.

Mickey officially has a new case on his hands.

Let’s hope we hear news of a fourth season renewal so we can see this case through!

Sidebar: I knew those mentions of cilantro had to mean something!

Closing argument: Just when we thought things were wrapping up, new developments emerged. Season 2 was riveting and I hope for more of The Lincoln Lawyer to come!
