‘Discovery’

Mickey thinks getting a leg up on discovery is a win until that turns out to be hundreds of boxes showing up at his office. The team searches high and low to find valuable information hidden somewhere in one of the boxes.
Meanwhile, prosecutor Andrea Freeman does her best to stay one step ahead of Mickey. The prosecution claims to have an eyewitness to Lisa leaving Bondurant’s office furthering the case against Lisa. Lisa continues to claim her innocence but becomes unnerved at the possibility of serving life without parole if convicted.
Mickey makes a stop in juvenile court to help an old friend. Cisco continues to surveil Kaz and grows frustrated with his findings.
Let us investigate further our case file for The Lincoln Lawyer S2E4 ‘Discovery’.
Refresh your memory:
- Terrell Coleman was one of Mickey’s clients in season 1. He was falsely accused of assaulting an officer. The officer had a long running jealousy of Terrell over a female’s affections. Mickey utilized his cleverness to get the charges dropped.
- Jeff is the name of Lisa Trammell’s ex-husband from whom she is estranged.
Boxes galore
Every nook and cranny in the Haller and Associates law office begins filling up with boxes of discovery from the prosecution. Mickey gathers with Izzy, Lorna and Cisco to begin investigating the contents. Izzy shares the enormous amount of property taken from Lisa, which includes her laptop, clothes, gardening tools and more.
Somewhere amongst the boxes, Winston sports a bowtie. Why? Lorna thinks Winston may be the best one to escort her down the aisle at her wedding to Cisco. She is trying out different looks for her dog.
Why Lisa?
Mickey poses a question to the group. He asks why Lisa is the main suspect. Lorna is not shy about pointing out that perhaps Lisa did kill Bondurant. Mickey prompts Lorna to make a case against Lisa.
Lorna reminds Mickey that Lisa considers Bondurant an enemy. Said enemy has taken out a temporary restraining order against Lisa. Lisa is not shy about her hate for Bondurant. Lorna believes that makes a compelling argument for motive. Furthermore, there is an eyewitness that claims to have seen Lisa leaving Bondurant’s office the day he was murdered.
Finally, Lorna says she can usually trust her gut about people, and she has a gut feeling that Lisa is guilty. Furthermore, Lorna took it upon herself to assess the eyewitness earlier that morning at a coffee shop.
Margo Schafer, the eyewitness, was in line at the coffee shop. Lorna slyly moved up to the counter next to Margo and requested help reading the specials. Margo had no trouble at all reading the small print. She passed Lorna’s test.
But how?
Mickey considers Lorna’s case against Lisa but asks how she could possibly have performed the murder. Izzy, who has been looking through files about personal effects taken from Lisa, shares that there is one item missing from the toolkit recovered from Lisa’s home. Which item? The hammer.
The scene shifts to Mickey talking to Lisa as she looks through her shed. Lisa points out that all her staff have access to the shed.
What is the deal with Jeff?
Mickey probes for more information about Lisa’s ex-husband, Jeff. Lisa is pretty vague with details, claiming that she does talk to Jeff. Mickey suggests that she call him since Lisa said the toolkit actually belonged to her ex.
Lisa does not want to speak to Jeff. Mickey asks why they divorced. She says they “grew apart.” She talks about wanting to move forward with the restaurant business while Jeff was only interested in his music and weed. Mickey asks again about Jeff’s whereabouts, recalling that Lisa had last heard he was in Ensenada.
Change of subject
Lisa asks Mickey to attend her monthly community dinner that evening at the restaurant. The event allows less fortunate guests to enjoy the menu while only being asked to pay an amount they are able.
Lisa becomes a little teary-eyed telling Mickey that reservations appear to have been negatively impacted by the case. She hopes he will attend the dinner and believes that his presence will lend favor to her image.
Off to court
Mickey arrives to juvenile court where he meets a former client, Terrell Coleman, who helped Mickey gain access to the Staples Center last year when Izzy was in trouble. Now, Terrell needs help with his daughter’s case. Angelica is about the same age as Hayley. She has been charged with vandalism for painting over a store’s pink exterior wall, changing it to black. Angelica claims her act was an “homage to Virgil Abloh” who recently passed away.
Mickey assures Terrell that the charges will be wiped from Angelica’s record once she turns 18. Terrell is worried, however, that Angelica’s mom will blame Terrell and take custody privileges from Terrell.
Mickey manages to convince the quirky Judge Sandy to give them a one-day continuance.
An offer
Mickey gets a message from prosecutor Andrea Freeman who wants to meet with him.
The Lincoln Lawyer is surprised to hear that Andrea has a plea offer for Lisa, voluntary manslaughter and six years jail time. Andrea was insistent at the arraignment that a deal would not be offered. Why the sudden change?
Mickey is convinced that the prosecution has learned of something that will hurt their case. He needs to find out what that is. Unfortunately, Andrea says the offer is only good for one day.
Back at the office, Lorna tells Mickey she fears that he is letting Andrea get under his skin. She also reminds him that Hayley stays with him tonight. He pretends to remember, but Izzy and Lorna agree that he forgot.
Approaching Lisa
Mickey stops by Lisa’s restaurant where she is hosting the community dinner. He is none too happy to see Henry Dahl there interviewing guests for the true crime docuseries.
Mickey asks Lisa to go for a walk. He tells her about the plea deal offer. Initially, she is adamant that they go to trial and fight to prove her innocence. Mickey reminds her of the high stakes, a life behind bars without parole, if the trial does not end in her favor. Lisa is distraught and wipes tears from her eyes.
Mickey tells her that she only has one day to decide. Meanwhile, he will search for something that could give her case a leg up.
Incriminating photos
Cisco approaches building inspector Walter Kim at work. Walter was the witness noted on the temporary restraining order against Lisa. Cisco accuses Walter of helping Bondurant for his own gain. He suggests that Walter did not really see Lisa threatening Bondurant.
Walter Kim corrects Cisco and shows photos him of Lisa yelling at Mitchell Bondurant and even physically grabbing at him. Oops.
Other findings
The staff is rabidly searching for information on Bondurant that could be a problem for the prosecution. They learn that Bondurant was losing money big time on an apartment complex called the Terrazzo. It sounds like there were permit problems leaving the building vacant for three years. They update Mickey on these findings.
Gotta go
Cisco tells Lorna he needs to leave because he is worried that Kaz may be involved in something dangerous since he dismissed Cisco’s usual offer to give him a ride to his parole meeting. Lorna implores Cisco to proceed with caution.
Once he leaves, Izzy asks Lorna if Cisco is okay. Lorna is not certain.
Following Kaz
Earlier, Cisco snapped photos of Kaz suspiciously meeting with someone. Cisco is going to confront Kaz.
We see Kaz returning to his hotel looking nervous and checking to see if he is being followed. As he enters the room, Cisco enters abruptly startling Kaz. Cisco notices that Kaz has been packing his things.
Cisco confronts Kaz about the photos and tells him that Teddy believes he is snitching on the club in exchange for early parole. Kaz confesses that he is meeting with the feds. He says it was not about getting out early. He says he became mixed up in a situation where a fellow prisoner died. Kaz was being charged with murder even though he claimed self-defense.
Witness protection
The feds are using a possible murder charge to get information from Kaz. Cisco does not understand why Kaz did not tell him about all this, but Kaz claims he did not want Cisco to get mixed up in it.
Kaz told the feds that Hard Case Casey got drunk and loose lips revealed details about a six-figure gun deal. Since Kaz was not involved there, he thought he would use the information in his favor. Plus, Teddy would blame Casey for talking to ATF.
Cisco is livid and reminds Kaz that Teddy already believes Kaz has cut a deal. Teddy will blame Kaz and now Cisco, too, for saying Kaz was not a threat.
Kaz thinks he is covered because he has been offered witness protection. He suggests the same for Cisco, but Cisco wants to keep his life with Lorna and his job with Mickey.
Mickey digs deep
Mickey works on the case while Hayley does homework. He is at a standstill. Hayley recommends that he shift gears for a while. Mickey switches to Angelica’s vandalism case.
He asks Hayley her opinion of the wall. Is it art? She says it would make a good selfie spot. She points out that a location that goes viral could be very lucrative for influencers. This sparks something in Mickey and he makes a call to Angelica’s dad, Terrell.
Back to Bondurant
Switching back to the Bondurant files, Mickey discovers an email where Bondurant demands a large refund from Alex Grant of Argel Construction for claims of incomplete work. Furthermore, if Grant does not refund him, Bondurant will report the issue to the bank, which is required to advise the feds of any suspicious activities. Mickey wonders what Bondurant has on Grant that he would not want reported.
Mickey tries to call Cisco to enlist his help. Also, he calls Lorna and Izzy and learns that they have uncovered plenty of emails where Bondurant attempts to strongarm people. Mickey tells Lorna that he cannot reach Cisco. Lorna lies and tells Mickey that Cisco left his phone behind. She then immediately texts Cisco to find out where he is.
Angelica makes bank
The next day Mickey gets the vandalism charges dropped against Angelica. But he also arranges for the shop owner to pay royalties to Angelica for sales after she painted the wall black. Here is how it went down.
Mickey’s call to Terrell was about getting a Lakers celebrity to stop by the shop owner’s store, Lux. Did we mention that Terrell now works in promotions for the Lakers? Terrell calls upon former player Robert Horry. A sales associate asks Horry to pose for a selfie in front of the black wall. Her social media post encourages people to come shop at Lux like Horry, and sales go up.
Mickey produces a copyright document protecting the black paint as Angelica’s artwork. Therefore, the shop owner is technically making additional sales and income from Angelica’s art. Do you see what he did there? Smooth, Mickey, very smooth.
Cisco produces
Mickey was finally able to reach Cisco who researched Alex Grant. Long story short, Alex Grant was born with the last name Kazarian and is the son of imprisoned organized crime boss Sasha Kazarian.
Apparently, Bondurant was extorting money from Grant, which provides motive for murder. Mickey is convinced that this is “the straw man” that Andrea was trying to hide. Surely, this precipitated the plea deal. He has just enough time to get Lisa’s decision and inform Andrea that Lisa rejects the offer. Haller calls Lisa who is working in her garden. She agrees that they should not take the plea offer.
Wait, what?
Whew! It feels like the Haller team found the incriminating information just in time.
Mickey meets Andrea and tells her that Lisa rejected the offer, but Andrea reports that the offer was already pulled even though Mickey met the response deadline. Haller is confused and Andrea tells him, “Circumstances on the ground have changed.”
Mickey calls the office to tell Lorna to prepare for “another long night” because Andrea has uncovered something even bigger, something that must be devastating to the defense.
Sidebar: Things have really turned a corner when Lorna chooses to lie to Mickey. Even though Izzy says she will stand by Lorna, it is not a good look for our favorite law school student.
Closing argument: This setback hit hard. The Lincoln Lawyer team worked tirelessly the entire episode to uncover Bondurant’s extortion just to have the rug pulled out from under them.
