Who Will We Lose?
Normally, producers and writers assemble television seasons as complete story arcs unto themselves. Yes, they can still link from one season to the next in very cohesive ways, but each season will have it’s own beginning middle and end. Even in LOST, with those legendary cliffhangers, had identifiable set pieces and villains that defined a given season. Why am I telling you this? Here’s why – at San Diego Comic-con this year, I attended The Last Ship panel. There, showrunner Steven Kane told us all when TNT renewed the fourth and fifth season almost back to back, they conceived a story that would run for both seasons.
Again, why bother mentioning this again? I feel like we’re about to lose someone. I bet we lose Meylan, as I’ve suggested before. His loss, while tragic since he’s a good guy, would not hit quite the same way as one of the James’ original crew. If that’s the case, anybody could go. Which leads me to my next question…
What Is the Extent of Jeter’s Injury?
The stalwart Chief of the Boat sustained some kind of internal injury when the James sailed into a storm two episodes ago. He never went to sickbay and has coughed up blood when no one’s looking ever since. In this episode, his stoicism put the mission at risk when he couldn’t defend himself from the upstart prison guards. One punch into the melee, Jeter goes down hard and two sailors have to carry his normally-useful carcass back to the James. I assumed Jeter had broken a rib two episodes ago. Some readers thought maybe he’d punctured a lung or other organ. I have to imagine the punch he took didn’t help any of those conditions. Could the damage reach a fatal point? Maybe. He might have been bleeding internally this whole time, meaning that when Doc Rios checks him out, it may be too late. (That’s how TV medicine works – no idea if that’s how real medicine works.) Either way, we get our answer next week.
Will Giorgio Turn on His Dad Anyway?
Giorgio has taken a LOT of crap from his dad this season. Constant put-downs and comparisons to Christos, Dr. Vellek’s favorite child. Now we know: Christos died before the apocalypse and the Christos we’ve been watching as the audience exists only the Nostos-riddled mind of Dr. Vellek. Still, even with the constant abuse and crazy behavior, Giorgio clung to the belief that his dad was the only guy capable of saving the world. When Giorgio sold out Fletcher to his Dad leading up to the comm room confrontation, my mind changed about Giorgio. I thought he stuck around just to take advantage of his dad’s influence. Now I see, that’s just a perk. He knows he plays an integral role in keeping his dad’s fragile mind moving in the right direction. He’s willing to take the heat from his dad if it means he can finish his work on the Red-Rust.
Up to now, I had thought Giorgio may seek the James as a way to betray his dad. That’s a lot of abuse and Giorgio never seemed like the kind of guy to just shrug it off. Now, I have to adjust my thinking. I still have a hunch that Giorgio may deal with the James in some way – to get help for his dad. His dad, like Mike before him, became attached to the Nostos fueled visions of departed family. Unlike Mike, Vellek keeps dosing himself with Nostos. Now I see Giorgio is more of a beleaguered caretaker than an abused son. Who would fault him for wanting to help his dad?
