The InBetween Episode 8
What would you do if a ghost murdered over thirty years ago pleaded for you to find her? This week’s InBetween, that is what Cassie tries to do. Things are more complicated than it seems. Let’s dive in.
Last Call
Cassie is closing up the bar when she notices a young woman with a Discman dancing and singing outside on the patio. She attempts to tell her they are closed, to be thrown into a vision. In the vision, she sees the same woman and the body of another on a boat. Disturbed, she goes to Hackett’s house to ask for his help. The woman with the Discman is Millie, a teenage girl who disappeared in 1985. The case has been cold for some time.
Hackett promises to help her and the two begin to investigate.
Stepping on Toes
Ed Roven, our favorite murderous ghost makes his return, angry for some reason. At first, it isn’t clear to why. Then, when Cassie companies Hackett to visit Millie’s parents, she learns there may be a connection. Cassie goes into Millie’s room where she picks up a cassette tape, hearing the song that Ed Roven used during his murders. It alarms Cassie, but she and Hackett aren’t sure how he could be involved as he wasn’t in Seattle at the time. Things are further complicated because another woman fitting the profile was just taken only days previously.
Ed Roven was executed years ago. What is happening?
He warns Cassie to keep her distance from Millie and her case, which adds another piece to the puzzle. Why is he so obsessed with it? Hackett and Asante look over the cases, agreeing that the boat Cassie saw in her vision might be involved. It is possible that Roven spent time in Seattle in the summer of 1985. His bank statements are completely dark from May to October of that year. If he worked for cash, it is highly possible he may have been involved.
The two go to the marina to question the dockmaster and his people. The dockmaster says he doesn’t recognize him but offers the paperwork for during that time. Ed Roven doesn’t appear on any of the public boats, but Asante has an inkling. There was a private boat listed during that time and luckily, the captain of it still lives in the area. He says that Roven worked for him that summer.
Connecting Dots
Cassie, at work, sees the bodies of many women hanging in a vision. She then experiences the death of one of the prostitutes, but can’t see who Roven worked with. He threatens her again, telling her to leave it alone. A homeless man comes at her with a broken wine glass, saying she is a witch and he needs to cut out her eyes. Shaken, she goes to Hackett.
Roven was weird, according to the Captain. He also spent a lot of time with a dark-haired fellow, but he couldn’t remember the man’s name. Roven once borrowed money from the Captain to bail the man out of jail following an arrest for hiring a prostitute. The police records are alarming. The dockmaster, Frank Blair, is the man Roven bailed out.
At the precinct, while Cassie is shaken she still wants to find Millie. She wants help on how to question Roven. Hackett is adamant about this not happening, but Asante seems willing. Meanwhile, they raid Frank’s house and find the missing woman alive and take Frank in. He denies having killed Millie, who was not a prostitute like all of his victims. They do find many missing women’s bodies at his house.
How to Piss Off a Ghost
Asante meets with Cassie to question Roven. Based on his profile, Asante gives her tips. She uses them to the best of her ability, including the last tip Asante gave her. Cassie looks like Millie; it may be why Roven hangs around her. She taunts Roven with his music to make him appear and the two share heated words.
She finally is thrown into a vision with Roven and she sees that Roven was in love with Millie, but couldn’t lead a double life. Frank murdered by night and Ed played teenage romance by day. Ed was forced to choose. He asks Millie to come to an address one night and Frank tells him to kill her. Interestingly, he almost changes her mind because of how helpless she seemed, especially her eyes.
He murders her anyway; she is his first kill. He says in the vision he vowed to never leave another woman’s eyes so that she couldn’t stare at him the way Millie did. Ed thinks he didn’t reveal where her body is to Cassie, but Cassie notices things.
The Music Plays On
Cassie believes Millie’s body is where she met Roven, at a gazebo near the water. Hours of work by the police later, they find her body and her Discman, finally giving her family peace. She is seen dancing into the darkness. Cassie heads home, where she dances like Millie in her living room.
Meanwhile, Hackett visits with the killer from episode one, Roven’s copycat. He’s going for an insanity defense. Hackett thinks Roven is told him how to kill the women; this is confirmed when he’s led back to his cell and Roven tells him that its time he escaped the place.
Thoughts
One of the stronger episodes, this one kept my attention the longest. The visions were less overdone, more to the point and chilling. Harriet Dyer gives it her all in the bar during one scene, broken and horrified by what the women went through. The storyline in this episode is something we’ve been waiting for – some of the odds and ends to make sense.
We now have an idea to why Roven is so obsessed with Cassie. She looks like his first and only love. I am curious if we’ll see more of him in the finale and if he keeps his promise of helping his copycat escape.
Ed Roven is by far the most interesting character in this series. He’s sinister and vile, but easily the most developed. He is shown to have the capacity to love, but it isn’t enough. But, he is a killer and that overpowers him.
Asante seems very willing to help Cassie where Tom isn’t. I would’ve liked to see this explored more, as he was so hesitant about her abilities at the beginning of the show. Granted, with one episode left, this may not be explored much more. Hackett will not be happy if he learns that Asante helped her.
