The InBetween Episode 8
We all have a celebrity that meant something to us growing up. One able to elicit a smile or a positive memory. In The InBetween episode 8, Cassie finds out hers died.
The Case Overview
Detectives Hackett and Asante are investigating the murder of a young woman who seemingly had her entire life ahead of her. The initial evidence makes the duo believe there was a boyfriend involved or someone who was romantically linked to her, but the victim, Holly’s, sister said she was not seeing anyone. The sister and her husband, Luke seem distraught over her death.
Holly was someone who was always on an adventure, off spending others money or trying new things. She wasn’t the responsible type and it seemed that she picked a new passion quite often. Tarot cards were her most recent venture and Cassie begins to have visions of the cards coming to life. They seem to represent what happened to her (and some are downright creepy, including the skeleton of a baby).
The detectives soon find out that Holly was harvesting her eggs for her sister and her husband, who struggled with infertility issues. The woman at the clinic admits that Holly made a downpayment of $5,000 but needed a second payment to go through with the treatment. She called her sister for the money but gets brushed off. Taylor, the sister, goes for a walk while Luke, the husband goes to play cards. Holly decides to pay her sister a visit and they fight.
Taylor resents Holly for being selfish, unaware that the money was to help her. They fight and Taylor slaps Holly hard and she hits the ground, bleeding and seemingly dies. Luke helps her dispose of the body and the two seem to flip on each other.
Celebrity Encounter
Meanwhile, Cassie struggles after finding out about Jace Gray (a musician)’s death. It brings back with memories of her mother, who adored him. Most of Cassie’s positive memories come from the times they listened to his music.
Much to her surprise, Jace reveals himself to her. At first, she is excited to help someone she idolizes, but soon finds out Jace is not the man she thought he was. He gave up his son when he was only a baby, perhaps to chase the life of fame. She goes with him to a coffee shop and sees that his son was adopted by a loving family and is off to Yale. He doesn’t know anything about who his father is and never looked into it.
This upsets Jace and he demands that Cassie help him connect with his son. She tells him she can’t force someone to want to see him and they argue. It would seem to open some old wounds for Cassie.
Regardless, as the episode goes on, she begins to soften toward him. She admits to him that when she was young, her mother made bad choices, including boyfriends. One night they packed up in the middle of the night and both were scared. It was his music that made the two of them calm down and remind them they were safe. He wasn’t there for his son, but he was there for her and that mattered to him.
The episode ends with Cassie at a vigil for Jace, singing his songs with other fans.
Thoughts
I can’t believe we are two episodes from the finale and things still aren’t heating up. I’m a bit disappointed in the lack of information this show gives you on the supernatural side of things, still. What makes Cassie only see certain ghosts? Where do they go after she talks to them? There are certain things that never get explained. I think that’s important for a show trying to stand out on its own two feet and not be compared to other ones like it.
I am glad they finally brought some new information for Hackett and Brian. We finally see them as more of a family this episode when they find out Brian needs surgery. The show needs to make the characters less one dimensional. It is crazy that we are eight episodes in and we know so little about them all, except for maybe Asante.
I hope that these last two episodes are exciting, as the show hasn’t built much up toward a finale thus far.
