The Expanse Season 4 Premiere
Amazon Prime gave us an early Christmas gift this year, season 4 of The Expanse and an early season 5 renewal.
When we last left off, everyone was heading through the ring to unexplored and uninhabited worlds.
With no further wait, here is my review of
Season 4 Episode 1: New Terra
Now that Earth, Mars and The Belt are vying for a place in the new world all hell is breaking loose once again.
Bobbie (played by Frankie Adams) put it into the grand words when she told her new sailor friend on Mars to keep his uniform tidy because the war would be coming again.
It’s also nice to finally see Mars being represented on the show. Though we didn’t see much, it was enough to wet my taste buds and I hope to see a lot more.
Let’s see what the other planets and people are up to.
Earth
James Holden
Holden (played by Steven Strait ) is on Earth visiting his family.
We see him talking to one of his many mothers, Elise Holden (played by Frances Fisher).
Elise wishes Naomi could come to Earth so they could meet face to face.
We then see him talk to Miller (played by Thomas Jane).
Miller is eager to get through the ring for the next piece of the puzzle and pushes Holden to get him there.
Avasarala
Secretary-General of the U.N Avasarala (played by Shohreh Aghdashloo) is trying to keep the peace with all the people who want to pass through the ring.
It’s nice to see that Avasarala is still as cutthroat as ever. She isn’t going to be walked on under any circumstance.
After the meeting, Avasarala tells Holden she wants him to go to one of the new planets, Llus also known as New Terra by the inners and Martians. There’s a threat of the protomolecule as well as a land dispute. And since Holden is the only expert when it comes to the protomolecule, she saw him as their best bet.
The Roci
Naomi
Naomi (played by Dominique Tipper) is preparing herself for being on a planet with gravity by taking enhancement drugs to enhance her body mass. She is also working out. It was hard to watch her going through so much pain.
Alex (played by Cas Anvar) is still as in-tuned with the Roci as ever and had a quick chat with Bobbie while Amos (played by Wes Catham) talks to Clarissa Mao (played by Nadine Nicole) who is serving time for her crimes.
We learn Amos gave her a chance to ”space” herself so she didn’t have to go, but she chose not to. He also calls her ”Peaches” a nickname he has for her in the books.
Behemoth
Drummer (played by Cara Gee) and Ashford (played by David Strathairn) are dealing with belter pirates. They’re being accused of not caring for their own people since they are shooting down any of their ships that try to bust through and some have even gone as far as calling them ”inners”.
In a phone call with Naomi, Drummer made clear that she didn’t like the idea of belters going planet-side and that in a couple of generations the kids of those on llus won’t know their own heritage.
I found it really funny during a conversation with Ashford when she said she had a friend who had a boyfriend with an imaginary friend who knew about the ring. I like seeing she still has that edge to her.
Llus or New Terra
Adolphus Murtry (played by Burn Gorman) crew get ambushed on his way to the surface of Llus and is being cared for in one of the settlements.
when he hears the ship, he is there to meet the Roci crew when they arrive.
The locals attack the Roci crew believing they’re there to take their land.
That is when a menacing black cloud appears and a storm comes through and drops metal pieces from the sky.
I think we have found out one of the things that might’ve killed off the original settlers.
In conclusion
While it was entertaining, the episode seemed to jump all over the place. It felt as if you hadn’t read the books you were doomed to get lost.
Thankfully, near the end things settled down and started to come together.
It’s great seeing all the characters back.
Amazon has done a great job keeping up the beautiful graphics and CGI we have come to love.
