Sweet Magnolias returns to Netflix this summer!
The popular Netflix original series Sweet Magnolias is coming back for its third season on July 20th. Fans have long awaited news of the season 3 release date. Hopefully, a trailer for the new season will not be far behind this announcement.
Sweet Magnolias follows the lives of three longtime friends – Helen, Dana Sue and Maddie – as they navigate family, relationships, jobs and more. The three best friends (aka the “sweet magnolias”) meet weekly for “margarita night” to stay connected to what’s going on in each other’s lives. The ladies have also been known to “pour it out” for unscheduled nights, too, when life throws one of them a curveball.
What’s at stake?
If the season 2 finale has anything to say, I would predict that the next emergency margarita night cannot be far behind.
When last season faded to black, Helen has just received a very surprising marriage proposal from her ex-boyfriend. Ryan swoops in after his Aunt Frances’ celebration of life service and gets down on one knee. I think Helen is just as surprised as the viewers.
Meanwhile, over at Sullivan’s restaurant, Dana Sue’s business partner and Maddie’s boyfriend, Cal Maddox, has just thrown a punch at a seriously overzealous fan of the retired baseball player. The fan named Stu recently met Cal at a charity gala and seems to think that introduction makes them best friends. Stu aggressively insists that he is going to avenge Cal’s firing by the school board. Cal throws the punch after Stu lunges toward Maddie. Having already been called by Dana Sue, the cops arrive and take Cal with them.
Another surprise occurs when Dana Sue who has officially welcomed husband Ronnie back into her life receives a very large check from Ms. Frances’ estate. What will she do with it?
Other concerns
The surprise proposal from Ryan comes at a complicated time. Helen and Erik are taking things slow but serious as a couple while Erik supports Helen’s goal of getting pregnant via fertility treatments. Fans will recall that Ryan said he did not want to have children. He and Helen broke up before she found out she was unexpectedly pregnant with Ryan’s child. Very sadly, that pregnancy ended in miscarriage. Now, however, Ryan claims that he does want to have children with Helen. Talk about bad timing, right?!
A storyline that has generated much debate among viewers is Maddie’s reaction to ex-husband Bill having fathered Isaac in high school. Bill tells Maddie that it was “before you and I got serious”. Maddie is livid, but some viewers suggest that she is not an injured party if they were not yet dating or exclusive. Others claim that Maddie has the right to be feel cheated if she and Bill were involved at all when the consummation took place. Should viewers agree to disagree with one another? Or might we learn more in season 3 about the specifics of these high school encounters?
Forbidden love
Mary Vaughn Lewis is on the offensive after the sweet magnolias successfully petition for a recall vote for the mayoral office. Of course, Mary Vaughn’s husband is the current mayor whose practices have come into question, specifically related to real estate. Real estate agent Mary Vaughn has already orchestrated Cal’s firing as teacher and coach. And now she is insisting that her children have no association with Maddie and Dana Sue’s offspring.
This mandate does not sit well with her kids Jackson and Nellie who are romantically linked to Annie Sullivan and Kyle Townsend, respectively. Jackson and Annie privately insist that they will not comply with the order. Nellie and Kyle share their first kiss after Nellie shares the bad news.
Mystery woman
As if we do not already have enough to worry about, Annie encounters a mystery woman who speaks very unfavorably of mom Dana Sue. This same woman is captured slashing a tire on Dana Sue’s catering van. The incident has been posted on the tell-all Instagram account “serenity_secrets415”, the same account that outed Dana Sue’s former relationship with Jeremy.
Who is behind the secret tabloid account? And who is this woman that spews such vitriol for Dana Sue? All we know is that Maddie claims, “She’s back!”, upon seeing the tire slashing incident.

Another question on the horizon involves Ty’s feelings for Annie. Has he realized that he has romantic feelings for her? Will Trotter and Ashley be able to adopt a child this season? How will Isaac move forward with the news of his parentage?
Fortunately, we don’t have too much longer to wait to get some answers as Sweet Magnolias season 3 approaches. The new season arrives on July 20th on Netflix. Don’t miss out on all that happens in the seemingly quiet town of Serenity, wink-wink!
