SWAT Episode 16 “Payback”

SWAT season finale

SWAT Episode 16

Last week we saw Hondo, once again, keep his promise to a friend and his family. We also witness Chris give the cold shoulder to a fellow female officer in the academy for a potential SWAT spot. The armored car/truck robberies were pretty cool. Anyone ever wonder what it would be like to rob one of those, GTA style?

This week’s episode is about military vets and a kidnapped heiress on the receiving end of revenge. Payback is the theme and the episode definitely has a deeper message, which I always love. Life lessons are never a bad thing. Let me know your thoughts on the episode by Tweeting me!

Let’s get into it…

Busted

Classic showing of an intense club session. Music. Drinks. Dancing. A “creep” watching a girl dancing. Okay, so he’s not a creep. He tried to save her from being kidnapped. Turns out Rick is the bodyguard of Juliette Carlton, the daughter of wealthy parents.

“You just want to keep your kids safe and you can’t. It’s the dirty secret of parenthood.” – Deacon

“This stuff really winds him up” – Luca

Papa deacon isn’t happy

The slow and silent SWAT raid…

Hondo and the team move in on suspect number 1, Juliette’s ex-boyfriend. Turns out, he’s innocent due to a pizza order.

“Oh, sounds like your ride’s here” – Street

Deacon heads over to Juliet’s house to ask her parents a few questions – trying to find out why and who would take their daughter. While he is at the house, Juliette calls saying the kidnappers want $5,000,000 in 24 hours.

Protect the protector

Hondo assigns Luca to watch over Rick while he is recovering from his bullet wound in the hospital. Rick isn’t happy and wants to help with the case but Hondo makes the call for him to stay under Luca’s watchful eye.

“Don’t worry, I’m good company.” – Luca

Anyone notice the transition between scenes with the opening of cans?

Speaking of changing scenes, Mumford is getting married…again. Deacon, being a long time friend of Mumford, doesn’t look like he thinks the whole thing is a great idea. I mean the guy moved in and proposed within weeks of meeting the lady. How could you possibly know someone enough to marry them? He swears by, when you know it’s right, it’s right. What do you think?

Fast and the furious much?

A homeless man and former cop give Tan some helpful information on locating the kidnappers. He tells Tan that he saw the car parked and ready to go, outside the club, once they grabbed Juliette. He also tells them that he saw the same car over by a nearby hotel/motel.

Street, Tan, and Chris head over to the location and see the car the witness saw. While Tan and Chris head over to the front desk to see what the employees know, Street strolls by the car to scope it out. While walking away from the kidnappers’ vehicle, three of them pop out of the hotel door and start taking shots at Street.

Naturally, Tan and Chris follow suit in firing back at them. Then…a great car chase ensues. With Street behind the wheel, the suspects are not too far ahead of the three of them. We’ve seen him pull off those swift driving skills before.

Side note: I hope Alex Russell was really driving the car. This scene is pretty intense. By the look on his and Lina Esco’s faces, this might not have been a green screen. One thing I think this crew and production team prides itself on is the authenticity of the action scenes. Love it!

Back to the car chase…

Speeding through the streets and neighborhoods of LA, it’s a miracle no one got hit. I know, I know, it’s TV. The kidnappers end up turning a quiet little coffee shop into a drive-through. Getting jammed up in traffic, Street tries to work his way around it but instead gets into a car accident.

Who do you call when it’s a cop involved in a car accident? (hehe!)

Oh lover boy

While Luca babysits Rick at the station, Rick gets a secret call from Juliet with the phone she grabbed during the shootout. He tries to calm her down and talk her through trying to get out of the trunk. In the middle of the call she tells Rick that she can hear a helicopter. Hondo radios in a favor and gets the helicopter to help narrow down her location.

Unfortunately, the call cuts out, but not too long before Jess brings Hondo some new information. Supposedly the man, Tom Russell, behind the kidnapping is a former employee of the same company that Juliette’s parents hired in the first place and the real target of all this mess.

“That’s who grabbed Juliet? Why?” – Rick

“5,000,000 bucks and a chance to humiliate his ex-boss.” – Hondo

After speaking with Granger about his former employee and the lawsuit that was against the company, Rick gets another call from Juliette. This time, the kidnappers are listening. She used a code, which Rick taught her, to let her parents know that their time to hand over the money, just got cut shorter.

The kidnappers now know the cops are hot on their trail and really put the pressure on Granger and Juliette’s parents to pay up. Following their orders, her parents’ fire SWAT, but Granger advises against it.

If we know Hondo, he doesn’t back down that easy. Show of hands, who thinks he’s got a plan in the works?

Babies love Deacon

Jess calls Hondo on Tom’s last known address where, you guessed it, SWAT searches for him. Turns out he’s a deadbeat dad since he got hurt on the job. His ex-baby’s mama tells the team where she thinks he might be, an abandoned apartment building.

Quietly heading in to search the building they notice a car with the trunk open, where Juliette must have been. They get to the room with the only light on and bust down the door, SWAT-style. They grab a few suspects, calm Juliette down, and chase one of the other kidnappers to the roof.

This music is really building up the suspense. How do you guys feel during scenes like this? (Tweet me)

Tom ends up on the roof, hiding behind a vent. Hondo tries talking him to come out and surrender. Tom tells Hondo that it isn’t right how Granger treats his employees. Hondo distracts Tom from taking his own life by expressing the very thoughts many Veterans think and feel.

A very powerful moment in the show and an eye opener for us civilians.

Reunited and it feels so good

After taking Tom into custody, Rick and Juliette are reunited back at the station; both giving googly eyes to each other.

Just date already! Amiright?

After Juliette leaves with her parents, Hondo talks to Rick about the incident that got him kicked out of the Marines in the first place. Turns out he was defending a female Marine from a skeezy commander trying to cop a feel. Hondo can tell Rick is a good guy and offers his personal recognition into the Police Academy; says he would be a great asset to the force.

I second that! I’d like to see more of Rick in the future. Maybe in Season 2?

“Semper Fi.” – Hondo

“All the way.” – Rick

Love is in the air

Mumford’s new muse…seems pretty amazing. Which is exactly what everyone was thinking, two minutes after meeting her. Mumford calls off the planned wedding and decides to head to Vegas to elope. When it’s right, it’s right!

Next week on SWAT…

“We say we’re the best, time to prove it.” – Jess

I leave you with that. Muahahahaha!
