Sunnyside Episode 3

This episode focused on trying to get their friend Drazen back home.  The crew goes to visit Diana to see if she could help. When she starts to ask them basic questions about his last name, date of birth, and family, Garrett and the crew realize how little they know about him. Diana goes to visit the immigration office with Griselda and the siblings while Garrett, Brady and Hakim try to find out more information about Drazen.

Garrett goes to a Moldovian store. Of course the owner knows Drazen and his wife even works there, how convenient!  Garrett can’t understand why Drazen’s wife won’t help him try to get out, but it turns out that she is scared. She doesn’t want to leave America too.

Diana and her group get nowhere at the immigration office and the siblings become overly whiny while having to wait in all the lines. This frustrates Griselda as she tries to discipline them.

Everyone meets back up at the immigration office, where Garrett now knows Drazen’s last name. When he approaches the window and the unhelpful clerk, Garrett chats him up and he finally offers them information about Drazen. He is scheduled for his hearing today. Without a lawyer or character witnesses, he will most likely be deported. Garrett decides to be a character witness for him.

At the hearing, Garrett is having doubts. He’s never given a speech of this importance where the rest of Drazen’s life depends on it. He stumbles a little as he begins, but then he tells the judge how Drazen has been in America for ten years, works here, pays his taxes and that he deserves to be here. The judge denies it.

Diana to the rescue!  Instead of Drazen being deported, she was able to convince them to hold him and get him an immigration lawyer to help. Even though the crew feels defeated, there is still some hope for their friend.

Thoughts

This show still has trouble hitting the punchlines. The humor just isn’t there. I’m not sure if it feels rushed, where there’s more story that they have to cut for time, but there’s something that is lacking.  Even Diana and Mallory, who were excellent in the first episode, became part of the forced humor that seems to trouble this show.

I’m still waiting for this cast to gel together. I still feel like they are performing as stand up comedians. They’ll give their line and wait for the audience to laugh. They just feel separated trying to get laughs as opposed to working together as a group to get laughs.

UPDATE!

Sunnyside has been canceled/pulled from the NBC line up.  Low ratings plagued the comedy from the start and they weren’t able to recover. You’ll still be able to watch the remaining episodes from (what is now) it’s only season on NBC.com and the NBC app.
