Sunnyside Episode 2

KAs Garrett continues his pledge to teach the group what they need to pass the citizenship test, but he still doesn’t seem to take it seriously. Showing up 45 minutes late to the lesson and struggling to come up with a lesson plan, Garrett made a game to quiz the group on their knowledge.

He has questions about presidents, but also throws in some pop culture references. The group doesn’t see how those are relevant. After going through more of the lesson, even Garrett finds that he is learning things.

At the end of the session, he asks if any of them are interested in seeing a movie. The siblings are going home. They need help carrying several shopping bags, so Brady offers to help. Hakim tells them that he has prior plans and needs to leave without anyone following him. This behavior sets off suspicion with Griselda. She recruits Garrett to come with her and follow Hakim, especially if his actions may affect him becoming a citizen.

Off they go…

Hakim’s first stop is the ATM. He shoves a bunch of cash into a paper bag. Griselda still thinks he might be up to no good. Hakim hands the cash off to someone, so Griselda and Garrett approach Hakim asking questions. Hakim explains that the guy is an immigration attorney helping him get a visa for his sister. Garrett tells him that he is getting scammed.

When Brady arrives at Mei Lin and Jung Ho’s home, he is amazed at all of their possessions. Jung Ho disgards his watch because he got it in Paris and it is five hours off. Brady goes to pick it up and asks how he will be getting back home. Mei Lin suggests for him to take the green Lamborghini.

It only gets worse…

The crew meets at their usual hangout, a bar named Viola’s. Hakim can’t understand how easily he was scammed. Garrett wants to help Hakim and decides to go visit the lawyer. At the lawyer’s office, Garrett is just as easily played as Hakim was. When Garrett gets back to the bar, Griselda gets him to realize that this lawyer is just like him. They go back to the lawyer’s office, and all his stuff is gone.

Jung Ho has given Brady some of his old clothes and he is also using their credit card to pay for things. Griselda is the one that tells him he is taking advantage of his friends and that is uncool. On the contrary, Brady feels he is being very American, using trickle down economics.

He goes back to the siblings place and realizes that he was using them, but offers to be a real friend to them.

Shakedown

Garrett finds the lawyer down at the immigration office and wants in on his operation. He mentions that he is teaching immigrants how to prepare for the citizenship test and the lawyer seems intrigued. Garrett and Griselda try to set up the lawyer, but Hakim steps in to inform him of the set up.

Hakim offers forgiveness and asks the lawyer not to scam anyone else. The lawyer doesn’t agree to that and tells them that he will continue to scam people. It turns out Hakim was recording the conversation and tricked everyone. The lawyer agrees to give him his money back.

Thoughts

Diana Maria Riva continues to delight as Griselda. We didn’t get to see Mallory Modi (Garrett’s sister) or Ana Villafane (Diana) this episode, but I hope we get to see them more often.

I think these characters challenge Garrett and he needs that. It’s those moments that he sees when he could be a better person.  I was glad to see Hakim step up and take action. He certainly had me fooled!

Overall, I still feel this show is exaggerating the comedy, but it does have its moments of pure humor.
