The Other F Word – Freaking Fabulous

The Other F Word

There is something to be said about being 47, one of which is watching TV and not seeing many women like me.  What do I mean? There just aren’t many opportunities to see women my age in television. That’s one of the reason I love The Other F Word so much. It’s a chick flick of the best kind – old friends who have each others backs through thick or thin – right on through middle age! Yes! Finally a show that isn’t afraid to show wrinkles on air!

The Story:

The Other F Word is an edgy comedy about a group of friends who find that the angst of raising kids may be nothing compared to the angst of starting over after they are grown…

The Rub

An unexpected death has tremendous impact on lifelong friends, but none more so than Amy, a suburban empty-nester, whose husband announces he’s quit his job to join the Peace Corps and is leaving her for a year. He challenges Amy to find her own reason for being while he’s gone. A shocked Amy moves to the city with her single sister and along with their two best friends, begin life after kids.

The Inside Track

From Caytha Jentis, Writer, Producer & Director of The Other F Word:

The funny thing is, this is a funny show! However, mainstream producers said that while they loved the idea, there wasn’t an audience for it.

Two and a half years ago I walked into a network office to pitch a project for a show – a comedic series about parenting older children and the fits and starts of four midlife women friends restarting and reimagining their lives called The Other F Word – the “F” standing for fifty and forty, but also friendship, fearlessness, family, and fun.

Many networks praised the scripts and ideas, but it was a “Tough demographic” to sell.  The Other F Word was privately funded and released on Amazon Video, and the results were amazing. The First season quickly reached over 1 million views and the second season, released in September, has had over 90,000 views.

How could we be a ‘tough demographic’ if women over 45 control 66% of the wealth and are a large under-served audience? “

The numbers show that with NO advertising budget, people are interested in the stories of all women, in all stages of life.”

What Do I Think?

This is the show that middle-aged women have been waiting for!  It’s easy for me to identify with many of the things that these women are experiencing: kids growing up, life moving on, and finding where I fit in all these changes. I also find the show hysterical! I think I know all of these women in real life and I adore every part of Judy Gold’s character, Sherry.  She and I have a lot in common, especially for driving and road rage. It would near perfect if they’d have a fat friend. We all get older, but not all of us stay skinny! Give us a woman who looks like us and NOT a size 10 please!

I think this is the perfect show to sit with a few besties along with a bottle of wine and some chocolate. Then, go ahead, settle down for a night of laughter. You can binge the whole 2 seasons in less than 90 minutes, and that’s with bathroom breaks (which you will need if you have a  47-year-old bladder like mine.)

Give it a watch. You won’t be sorry.
