Prepare Yourself For Jessica Jones

Jessica Jones is one of the Netflix Marvel shows, part of The Defenders who have each had their own individual shows and then came together to fight some super bad guys. Jessica Jones season 2 drops on Netflix on March 8 (yes, that’s a Thursday, not a Friday like most Netflix premieres). The first season of Jessica Jones and also season 1 of The Defenders are on Netflix. This article contains spoilers for both; it’s meant to be a quick refresher if it’s been awhile since you watched them. There might also be minor spoilers for Iron Fist, Luke Cage and Daredevil. You’ve been warned.

Characters in Jessica Jones Season 2

Jessica is, of course, the main character. She’s a Private Investigator who works out of the tiny office that she also lives in, located in the Hell’s Kitchen area of New York City. Her superpowers are an incredible strength and an amazing ability to jump that almost seems like flying. She has a troubled past; among other things, she was orphaned in a car crash that killed the rest of her family and that seems to have left her with superpowers (more on that later). She was taken in by Dorothy Walker, who raised her along with her own daughter, Trish. Now that Trish and Jessica are grown up, they have the close but sometimes emotionally complicated relationship many sisters have, and they’ve both attempted to cut off ties with Dorothy, who was very manipulative and selfish.

Trish Walker is a famous radio talk show host in New York. Her show is called Trish Talk. She’s also pretty badass in her own right; she’s studied martial arts and knows how to defend herself even if we haven’t seen signs of actual super powers. As a child, Trish (née Patricia) was a child star whose career was controlled by Dorothy. She played a character called Patsy, so when she grew up and got out from under her mother’s control, she adopted the name Trish to distance herself from the Patricia/Patsy name.

Jessica’s other close friend is her neighbor Malcolm Ducasse who is often found in her apartment looking for food. In season 1, Malcolm was a drug addict who was under the influence of Kilgrave, the villain from season 1 (more on him below). In the process of defeating Kilgrave, Jessica freed Malcolm both from Kilgrave’s influence and his addiction, and he continues to be someone Jessica cares about as a close friend.

Jeri Hogarth is an attorney, a partner in the firm Hogarth, Chao and Benowitz. She is very professional and confident, the complete opposite of Jessica in many ways, but she appreciates Jessica’s skills as a P.I. and often employs her for certain types of jobs no one else can do.

Who is Kilgrave?

Named Kevin Thompson at birth, Kilgrave was experimented on by his parents in an effort to cure him of a neurodegenerative disease. He instead gained the power to control other people’s minds. But he was a true psychopath, possibly due to how he was raised, and he takes the name Kilgrave at some point prior to season 1. Also before season 1, Jessica and Kilgrave had a romantic relationship during which he forced her to kill a woman named Reva Connors, who was the wife of Luke Cage. Later during season 1 of Jessica Jones, Jessica begins a romance with Cage, which ends when she realizes who his wife had been and confesses to him that she killed her. Later he comes to understand Kilgrave’s power and forgives Jessica, though it’s too late for their romantic relationship.

Kilgrave was supposedly killed at the end of Jessica Jones season 1, but then again, he had supposedly died before season 1 ever began, so it’s unclear whether he’s now truly dead or not. What is clear is that he’s been shown in the trailers for Jessica Jones seaon 2. David Tennant, the actor who plays him, is credited as being in season 2; entertainment news stories have mentioned that he was on set during the filming of season 2. Kilgrave has a strong emotional hold over Jessica, even though she discovered in season 1 that he can no longer control her behavior. So maybe the scenes he’s in during season 2 are going to be flashbacks, or maybe he’s managed to again escape death’s clutches. We’ll have to wait and see.

The Defenders and Other Characters we might see in Jessica Jones season 2

Jeri Hogarth is also the attorney for Danny Rand, who is the Immortal Iron Fist. Hogarth’s firm hired Foggy Nelson, former law partner and best friend of Matt Murdoch, the alter-ego of Daredevil. During The Defenders, Matt Murdoch acted as Jessica’s attorney, and the loved ones of all of the Defenders characters were corralled at the police precinct building to keep them safe until The Defenders could defeat the bad guys.

Luke Cage was friendly to Jessica when they teamed up in The Defenders. He’s currently in a relationship with Claire Temple, the nurse who has treated injuries he’s sustained in his clashes with various villains. So it’s highly unlikely that we’ll see any rekindling of the romance between him and Jessica, but that doesn’t mean Luke or Claire won’t make an appearance in Jessica Jones season 2.

Non-spoilery Predictions about Jessica Jones season 2

I haven’t seen any of the episodes, though I have watched the trailers and read some information about the season. As was the case with season 1, the second season has a woman creator/show runner, Melissa Rosenberg. While most Netflix shows premier on a Friday, Jessica Jones season 2 premieres on March 8, a Thursday, because March 8 is International Women’s Day. Further, all of the episodes of season 2 were directed by women. If you watched season 1, you realize that in addition to having a woman main character, the series explores issues that are important to women and I expect that to continue in season 2.

I’ve heard some rumors that Trish Walker will play a prominent part in season 2. The name “Patsy” is part of one of the episode titles. I’m interested to see where this can lead.

We know Kilgrave was experimented on as a child. In season 1, Dorothy Walker gives Trish a file that contains information on medical treatment Jessica received after the car accident. Dorothy was given the file when she adopted Jessica, and notes that the medical bills were paid in full by a company named IGH. Trish does some digging and discovers that IGH is “an acronym for nothing. It doesn’t exist. No web page, no contact number, nothing.” The mystery of IGH and how Jessica got her powers is sure to be part of the plot of Jessica Jones season 2, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s somehow connected to Kilgrave and his powers.
