Instinct Episode 11
Sometimes our past catches up to us and this week it did for Dylan. Not only did we learn more about Andy, but we learned more about Dylan’s past and Lizzie and Julian finally have a real discussion. Oh and a lovely Father’s Day surprise as well.
The Crime
We start the episode off with a suspicious looking bag-carrying gentleman walking into a park. Suddenly there’s an explosion and we have a dead young man, Ramzy Kharal, and an apparent suicide bomber. Dylan mentions he has none of the traits of a bomber and since he was the only victim – it really didn’t fit.
As Dylan and Lizzie dig into Ramzy’s apartment they find a calendar with dates, times and the location of the next bombing. When they get there they grab a man that was acting suspicious, but were jolted by an explosion that was caused by a woman named Barbara Kramer, whom Dylan didn’t suspect.
As they dig into their personal lives, they find no connection between the two bombers. While checking out Ramzy’s apartment again, Dylan lays on the floor and sees Roman numerals on the roof giving them another location. They grab a man and find a note taped to him and an explosion goes off in the distance.
The bomb, this time, is a man on a motorcycle on a quiet, empty street. Dylan comes to the conclusion that they’re not bombers… They’re victims and the real bomber is using unexpected people as said bombs. This theory is confirmed when the tests on the shrapnel prove they were dummy detonators that were found on the victims.
Dylan realizes it’s an old acquaintance, John Raymond, from a program for young geniuses he went to as a child (we will get to this in more detail later). He realized that John was angry because after a bunch of failed jobs (due to the testing they went through) he finally wrote his dissertation he always wanted to publish, but was found to have plagiarized none other than Dylan’s book, Freaks. After seeing the pattern, he realized John would be at Steppingstone Park where they would have recess everyday. Dressed up like a couple with a baby carriage Dylan catches him and talks him into giving himself up in turn for psychiatric help due to the trauma of the experiments he went through.
Now for the main storyline…
Dylan
Throughout the episode we see Dylan losing faith in himself. We also see people trying to push him into a limelight he doesn’t want to be a part of. But the biggest reveal? At the age of twelve years old he was a part of an experiment called the Whitfield Project. The project was to see how far they could push some one psychologically but it never broke Dylan. They were put into pairs and told to tell their partner their hopes and dreams. Dylan told his partner John that he wanted to study all of the world (translating to Ramzy, a foreign student), play with the philharmonic orchestra (Barbara who was a musician), and ride a motorcycle like his father (the unnamed man was riding a motorcycle just like Dylan’s dad) and to be a father, which was how he knew John would put a bomb in a baby carriage. The doctor in charge then would make up lies about their partners mocking their dreams, but Dylan didn’t believe them. He wasn’t psychologically broken, but he developed trust issues that Lizzie is finally helping him break, and he is helping her.
Heart Break
At the beginning of the episode after a publicist talks with Dylan about being part of a magazine story, Andy told Dylan he was seeking the lime light and that he didn’t want his bar to be any part of the story. Andy storms out of the room mad after Dylan tells him he never supports his dreams like he supports Andy’s.
Making up and Reveal
Andy brings Dylan some make up Chinese dinner. After apologizing, Andy let’s Dylan know that he didn’t want the bar to be a part of the story because he never told his parent that he gave up being a lawyer to open his own bar. We finally get to see Dylan’s cute smile again at this point. But it’s short lived because Dylan gets a hunch in the case leaving us to wonder if things won’t get fixed.
As the episode ends, we see Dylan and Andy walking along the water front. We learn that Andy and Dillion have wanted kids ever since they fell in love and for a special Father’s Day treat, at-least in my opinion, they decide they were ready to become parents. I would love to see this storyline play out. It would be wonderful to see a happy, same-sex couple navigating work and home life.
Now for Lizzie and Julian
Julian meets up with Lizzie after telling Dylan that he fears someone from his past is involved, which he turned out to be right about. He asks Lizzie to talk to Dylan but she says he’s an adult and can make his own choices. As Lizzie leaves Julian hands Lizzie his phone number.
Later they meet up again and Julian tells Lizzie more about what he’s found out and since Lizzie knew that Dylan had been involved in the experiment they both get worried.
I would love to see these two hook up or at-least become working partners. I think they have great chemistry and both care for Dylan.
Just two more
With only two episodes of season one left – anything can and probably will happen. I can’t wait to see what happens next week.
