The Good Doctor Season 1 Finale aired March 26th, on ABC.
Good news, I didn’t need my tissues, after all. Well, maybe one or two.
Dr. Glassman’s Fate
The big story for the season finale, of course, being Dr. Glassman’s news that he is dying, which he delivers to Shaun after he comes to tell Glassman he wants him to be his friend again. Dr. Glassman says he has an inoperable glioma, and only has 18 months left.
Shaun spends the entire episode trying to figure out how to save his friend and mentor. Dr. Glassman has accepted the diagnosis, but Shaun hasn’t. Plus he’s lost the scalpel his brother gave him. After some touching scenes (including a flashback for Dr. Glassman of his daughter), and another even worse diagnosis (3-4 months, instead of 18), Shaun figures out a way for Glassman to have a biopsy, and it turns out that he has a cancer that is treatable. It looks like Dr. Glassman is going to make it.
The fear of losing his friend, and the fact that he lost his scalpel, has Shaun distracted during an operation on the patient this week—a guy who ate laundry detergent. Shaun makes a mistake that almost costs the patient his life. By the way, anyone who is crazy enough to consider eating laundry detergent, please check out this episode.
Back to Glassman—when Shaun gets the good news that his friend is going to be okay, he gives Glassman a great big hug. This is huge for Shaun, who does not like hugs, and shows how far his character has come this season.
The surgical team also came together, when Shaun made his mistake, and were willing to take his place for it. Melendez, in particular, has come such a long way since the beginning. He went from not trusting Shaun at all, to standing by his side, come what may. The comradery in the end (except for Dr. Reznick) was incredible.
A Cliffhanger?
The episode ended with Shaun going to Dr. Andrews to tell him about his mistake, a move which could get them both fired, which leaves us with a nice Season 1 cliffhanger.
Three takeaways for this episode: never eat laundry detergent, beware misdiagnosis, and never lose hope.

Glassman: I know, I love you, too.
Shaun: I love you more.”
