FBI Episode 3

What Lurks in the Woods..

Episode three of FBI starts in a suburb of Long Island, where we see a family. A father argues with his daughter about attending a party, when there is a thud outside in a rainstorm. They briefly ignore it, until there is a scream. The father goes outside to investigate and a bloody and beaten young girl collapses into his arms. She is practically naked.

We cut to two police officers with a K9 following the blood trail in the Long Island woods, looking for clues to where this girl came from, and how she ended up injured. They stop short in front of a clearing, where we see almost two dozen recently unsettled graves. They are shallow.

Horror on Long Island

Bell and Zidan are on the scene and Special Agent in Charge Mosier is already there. She tells them that there are nineteen victims, all ranging with different times of death. This area of the woods is far off from the Long Island Expressway, hidden from plain sight. Maggie says this means he is comfortable with the area and knows it well. Mosier smiles at her comment, as if she is proud. This is profiling, something Mosier is an expert at, as we know.

As a native Long Islander, this entire scene struck a chord with me and reminds me of the Robert Moses serial killer, a murderer who killed several prostitutes and others in the mid-2000s. They have yet to catch him, but the details are eerily similar. The pit in my stomach is growing. This sounds way too real. The woods are not far from the water, is this case going to mirror real life?

Bell suggests that this killer made his first mistake in that of not checking that the girl was dead. Mosier asks what this tells them, Maggie responds that before this the killer is smart and organized.

The Crown

At the medical examiner’s office, we discover that the other bodies range from as recent as three weeks ago, to over three years ago. They were stabbed over 30 times and beaten. Some of the girls have outdated breast implants (a technique used that hadn’t been used since the 1990s, though the victim is only 19). The medical examiner determines that they were probably sex workers, or prostitutes. Is my theory about the mirroring of this case true?

They can confirm that the girls are all from the same agency, as the killer removed a branding that each girl had. The girl in the hospital has the same marking, though hers wasn’t removed as well.

We cut to the hospital where Bell and Zidan are hoping to speak with the victim, now identified as Ukrainian Hailey Nurijev, who is in the United States on a work visa. She is about to be moved into surgery. As they discuss how their suspect is more of a sex trafficker, than a serial killer, we hear the young girl screaming in the background. Bell and OA go into her room in attempts to calm her down. She relaxes a little, telling them, “But they have my sister.”

Snake, Spider, Hawk

Hailey came to the US looking to get work, under the guise that the employment agency she contacted was a legit business. She was brought over and introduced to “Snake”, “Spider”, and “Hawk”, the three men responsible for the ring. Snake is the leader. She tells the two agents they told her they would kill her and her family if she talked and proceeded to brutally rape her for three days.

Maggie assures her that it isn’t her fault, and Hailey mentions they were at a beach house for some time when she asked for help for her sister Brooke. Brooke is sick, according to Hailey. She asked one of her nicer “Johns” to call 911. Snake found out, tried to kill her.

Kristen calls them back to the bull pen, where she explains how she used “meta data” to find other girls from Hailey’s photo. They are linked to the same camera and this allows them to identify nine of the victims.

OA is angry and says this is not something a guy with three sisters needs to see. Again, in this scene we see how great of an actor Zeeko is when angry. He can say so much with his eyes.

They find the John who called the police. He is a firefighter who doesn’t want to get involved, but when Bell threatens to tell his colleagues, he admits he saw her at a townhouse. They raid it and it seems empty at first. Then, they find a basement filled with beds, filth and a leaky ceiling. The overall vibe gives me chills. The two agents seem horrified, and then they discover pictures on the wall, drawn with makeup. Further horror comes when the other officers discover a medical examination chair, which looks out of some sort of horror picture show. It is filthy as well and has straps on it. What the hell happened here?

The Horror Continues…

The team discovers traces of polyacryimide, which is what the one victim’s implants were made from, on the chair, and traces in the garbage. It is linked to a Ukrainian implant procedure, which allows them to search doctors that might have practiced there but did not have a US medical license. As Kristen investigates this, Bell and Zidan speak to the property manager of the Town Houses. She says the buildings belong to a Jacob who is never around, and she does business for him. He owns many buildings, and this particular one was empty because they were waiting for building permits. She agrees to cooperate with police and is horrified that something like this happened in the building.

Hailey sits with a sketch artist to draw a picture of Snake and talks about the rumors other girls talked about regarding an “old” Ukrainian doctor. She has never seen him, but the other girls stated he was the only nice and kind one. Kristen finds the doctor and the two agents go to speak with him and are discussing the case upon arriving to his apartment. “Do you think he’s in the wind?” And suddenly, he falls, dead, onto a car behind them. (I mean, yeah, he was … in the wind. Ba dum tiss.)

Fight Song

They are tying up loose ends. Maggie and OA separate to search for the suspect, believing he is still inside the apartment complex. Maggie spots him in a mirror and there is a fight as they collide. She is an all-around badass, holding her own for some time before he briefly gets the upper hand, strangling her. She fights him off, but not before she sustains a nasty cut on her forehead. He escapes, but Maggie shows OA how he left his bloodied handprint on the wall. They have his fingerprints; they can ID him.

Not Shocking: Snake is a Snake

It is “Snake”. Snake is Stepan Tsarko and they raid his address, not finding him there, but discovering the brands of the victims in a keep safe. OA looks horrified, and they share a moment outside on the balcony, where OA talks a little about his past. OA then realizes that Stepan has a perfect view from his balcony to the woods across the water to where the bodies were buried. This case seems to get to him more and more.

Another officer discovers a picture, and they realize that the property manager (Eliza) is in on it, and she is friendly with Stepan. Kristen confirms this, and they realize Stepan worked with his cousin, Oleg, and Jacob, the property manager to run this entire trafficking ring.

They decide to set up a sting, trying to lure Stepan out to arrest him. OA wants to do it, but Valentine is picked by Mosier, after Mosier tells OA he has great undercover experience and she doesn’t want to burn him on something as simple as a John in a motel. On that note, OA agrees, but still looks annoyed.

Mr. Valentine

Valentine is humorous as a John. We also learn from Mosier he used to be vice, which is the first piece of background information we get about his character. He has three girls show up to the hotel, where they confirm services. As this happens, OA and Bell discuss the 1 in 5 statistic that Maggie told Hailey earlier in the episode. He has three sisters and a mother, and this clearly angers him. Maggie confirms this again and OA goes silent.

They are able to arrest Stepan, but the townhouses are empty, and they can’t find the other girls. Kristen says there is sand on Stepan’s tires, and the girls in the sting tell the police that they came from a beach house, not more than two hours away. An EZ pass confirms it’s in Long Island.

“Everything you just said is why he’d respond to me applies to you.”

In one of the best scenes of the episode, Mosier then tells Maggie she is going to get the location from Stepan. Maggie points out to Mosier prior to this that Stepan hates women and will be off his game because of this. Mosier says, “Everything you just said to why he’d respond to me applies to you”. There is this sense of respect between the two women and maybe some foreshadowing for future episodes. This is an awesome lead up to an even better interrogation. As Mosier guessed, Stepan is cocky and enraged by Maggie’s questioning. Missy Peregrym shines in this scene. They get the location of the girls.

The team gets to the location, where they take out two men, before accidentally missing a third. OA notices just before he lunges on Bell, and the two men fight while he yells at Maggie to stay back. The man does not win the fight with OA, he goes to “sleep”, and the two of them follow the rest of the team into the basement, where over 50 girls are huddled. They find Brooke, reunite her with Hailey, and the episode ends with Maggie telling Hailey she is a fighter, but leaves the room with tears in her eyes.
