Empire Episode 11

Lucious Lyon “The King” has returned to his throne, with all his memories intact.  He finds that a lot has changed but is determined to find his way back.  Queen Cookie decides to quietly control Empire in the background. While Lucious gains his footing…

Past Transgressions

Andre Lyon, fresh off his psychotic break decides to grow a conscious during this episode. Why?  I have no idea.  I would never, let me repeat NEVER reveal to my father that I tried to murder him.  Especially if his name is Lucious Lyon. Knowing his history of killing individuals with no regard of being family or not –  I would have steered clear of that danger and just lived with the guilt. Andre has enough money, he could have vacationed overseas for a while until his conscious was clear.

Will the Lyons recover from this confession?  I say yes, there are too many skeletons in the Lyon family closets.  This confession pales in comparison to those skeletons.  I admit I was surprised with his brother’s reactions.  I expected anger for almost killing their mother, instead I witnessed a sibling scolding of “Two wrongs don’t make a right” lecture.

Did anyone catch how quickly Cookie blamed Andre’s mental illness for his decision to murder his father?  This is setting the stage for Cookie and Lucious to turn on one another over their son. Lucious has not grasped that a mother’s love is unconditional. Coming between this love will cause claws, fangs and guns to come out. Once the smoke clears the only thing that would remain are bruised egos.

Eddie Barker Caveat

Money will make friends become enemies and gold diggers alike.  Eddie Barker (Forrest Whittaker) is a beast in the game of deception and conspiracy.  Eddie’s need for cash in his personal life pushed him to betray Lucious and Cookie.  Putting together an underhanded deal to sell Empire right under the Lyon noses.  It has the potential to be brilliant.  He has begun sabotaging the Lyon brothers in love (stopping Hakeem’s engagement) & Career ( removing Jamal from the Empire musical showcase) using the art of distraction.

The Lyon family is dealing with murders, kidnapping and custody battles and does not take the time to notice Eddie slowly taking over business meetings and Empire artists, to invoke his vision and line his pockets.  I don’t think Eddie will succeed in this plan and truthfully, he might end up missing, never to return.  His disloyalty will break Lucious and Cookie’s heart. I’m hopeful this misdeed of Eddie will push Lucious and Cookie back together for good.

Cookie Lyon

The queen of Empire seems to be getting sick.  She nearly fainted in Lucious’ arms and then completely fell unconscious while defending her son Andre.  I initially thought that she had been poisoned. (I know I’m extreme) I also realized that Cookie is a strong stubborn woman. It will take a lot more than a little poison to take her out.

Her sickness could not have come at a worse time for Empire.  Being out just one day in the music business is the equivalent of a year.  Knowing Cookie, she will run her business from the hospital bed just to stay relevant.  This tragedy will once bring the family together (at least for a moment) and rally around their mother.  I don’t expect the mood of togetherness to last long.

Empire continues to strike unexpected chords of intensity and unpredictable storylines. I look forward to the next episode.

After watching this episode I’m left with three questions

  1. Will the Lyon family turn their backs on Andre after confessing his attempted murder?
  2. Will Eddie Barker take Empire from Lucious and Cookie?
  3. Why is Becky keeping her pregnancy a secret?
