Designated Survivor Returns!

Designated Survivor begins Season 2 a year after the Capitol was destroyed by a well-placed bomb. President Tom Kirkman (Kiefer Sutherland) is trying hard to make his presidency legitimate. The Capitol has been rebuilt. Hannah Wells (Maggie Q.) is in hot pursuit of terrorist Patrick Lloyd (Terry Serpico) who infiltrated the US government at the highest level. The administration is dealing with a new threat of a hijacked plane that contains American citizens.

As the story line develops, we find the Ukrainian and Russian governments have plotted together to finance starting a potential war on American soil. The perceptive President figures out the plan and brings down the “Kirkman hammer” and ends the terrorist threat.  The releasing of the passengers and eventual blowing up of the plain due to an Oxygen tank left much to be desired with the action of this episode. Looking back at the first season you were sucked in with non-stop action, killings and plot twists that never end as expected. Hoping to see more of this in Season 2.

Very excited to see the introduction of the character Lyor Boone (Paulo Costanzo) who is a welcome comic relief. I found myself chuckling at his OCD methodology as he tries to help the Kirkman administration remain relevant. It was good to see him land on the show after a great run on Royal Pains.

Designated Survivor has a lot of potential, especially if the showrunners decide to follow the Patrick Lloyd story line. After all he did just return to Washington, D.C. which I’m sure wasn’t for sightseeing.

After watching this episode, I’m left with three questions:

  1. Will Patrick Lloyd kill a member of Tom Kirkmans’ family this season?
  2. Is Seth going to resign from the White House?
  3. Do you think Lyor will ever drink Goji Kombucha?

Designated Survivor returns every Wednesday 10p on ABC.
