Damnation Episode 6
Week after week Damnation brings viewers on a crazy ride that twists and turns in every direction. Trying to predict what will happen next is becoming near impossible. This week’s episode is no different and it had me on “pins and needles” from start to finish.
When we last saw the brothers, Creeley (Logan Marshall-Green) was standing over Seth (Killian Scott) demanding he confess to the murders he framed him for. This week we open with a flashback to Wyoming in 1924. We learn in this flashback that the brothers, along with Lew (Juan Javier Cardenas), use to work for their father strong arming people into giving up their land to an oil company. We also learn that Creeley doesn’t have the heart to threaten these people and it’s left to Seth to do the “dirty work”. I’m really impressed with how young they have made the brothers look. Creeley in particular looks much younger in the flashbacks. Kudos to the make-up team with Damnation.
Fast forward to the barn. Creeley is again demanding Seth confess to the murders he framed him for. When Seth balks at doing so, Creeley shoots a warning shot next to his head. I don’t think Creeley will really kill Seth, but perhaps if he pushes him too far he just might. Unfortunately for Creeley though he did not anticipate Lew showing up with a gun pointed at his back. I think Seth and Lew will have no problem killing Creeley, and he must think so too as he tosses his gun aside.
Life is Precious
Seth and Lew are torturing the hit man that was sent to kill the Preacher and his wife. I cringe when Lew threatens to castrate him with a burdizzo, and I’m not even a guy. The hit man refuses to tell Seth who sent him, instead he tells him life is a “long boring joke”. This upsets Seth and he shoots him, telling him he is wrong that “life is precious and God loves you.” Lew is not happy that Seth killed the man. He is sure they could have got more information from him, and I have to agree with Lew on this one. I think Seth is letting his preacher act affect the way he thinks.
Earlier at the Carnival Melvin Stubbs (Paul Rae) announced, in front of Sheriff Berryman (Christopher Heyerdahl), that he is running for Sheriff of Holden County. Berryman and his men now find Calvin Rumple (Dan Donohue) as he prepares to leave town. The Sheriff tells him before he can leave he needs to get the Duval Family to fund his reelection. The Duvals are the Industrialists that are after all the farmer’s land. This news has Calvin terrified. I’m not sure who the Duvals are or what they are capable of, but Calvin’s reaction tells me they are very dangerous people.
That’s My Boy
We flashback again to 1924. Seth gets a nasty beating by his father for covering up for Creeley’s failure to drive the homesteader off. I do feel a sorry for Seth at this point, but only for a moment. Their father then tells Creeley they are going for a ride. I’m scared for Creeley, I don’t know what his father has planned, but this man is so violent it can’t be good. They go to the homesteader’s house. After killing two of the man’s friends he tells Creeley to kill the homesteader. My heart is aching for poor Creeley. He does not want to kill the man. He cant stop shaking as he aims the gun at him. His father finally convinces him to shoot the man. “That’s my boy,” he tells Creeley when the deed is done.
Creeley wakes up in the barn with his boots missing. I have been wondering what Seth and Lew had done with him. He returns to the room he shares with Bessie (Chasten Harmon) all agitated, but he wont tell her what is going on. I feel so sad when Bessie tells him she is the only person that cares about what happens to him. Creeley finally tells her about Seth framing him for a murder seven years earlier. Suddenly Sheriff Berryman shows up and arrests Creeley. I’m in shock because I don’t know what he is being arrested for.
It turns out the Sheriff has arrested Creeley for the murder of the man he put on the Ferris Wheel. Creeley puts a bug in the sheriff’s ear that it was Seth that murdered the man, and that there may be more bodies under his church. We know Creeley dug up all the bodies, now we know where he put the other two. You can tell by the look on the sheriff’s face that he believes what Creeley has told him.
Under the Church
Sheriff Berryman shows up at Seth’s church and shares a story with him about the Preacher from his childhood. As he does this he bounces around on the floorboards. He finds a loose one and pries it up. To no one’s surprise, other then Seth and Amelia (Sarah Jones), he finds the bodies of the other two men. I love that Creeley stuck the corpses there. It appears Seth will finally get what he deserves. Seth and Amelia are given one day to prove they did not kill the men or they are going to be arrested.
We get a very sweet scene between Creeley and Bessie when she comes to visit him in jail. Their feelings for each other are really beginning to show. Bessie confesses to him that the sheriff is her father. She tells him to use that a leverage against him if he needs to. Creeley gives her his mother’s locket to hold for him and tells her about his childhood dream to be a teacher, even though he can’t read. I love these two as a couple and I hope they are together in the end.
That’s One Way to Get the Money
Amelia convinces Seth and Lew to rob the bank to get the money to pay off the farmer’s loans. I find it a little strange that no one in the bank recognizes their very own Preacher. Even with his lower face covered it’s obviously him. Preston Riley (Teach Grant) does seem to recognize him, but then says he must be “shit faced”. I think this will come back to haunt Seth in the long run. He even talks to the bank manager and is not recognized. I love this show, but find this scene a bit disappointing. It turns out they can’t get into the safe because it’s on a time lock. Lew uses dynamite to blow the door open, the explosion is so large everyone in the area is now aware the bank is being robbed. Seth and Lew make off with a bunch of money and permit papers that belong to the industrialist that is buying up the town.
While this is happening Amelia convinces Sheriff Berryman they should work together. The sheriff claims that the hit man that Seth and Lew killed was the killer of the three other men. Berryman now looks good to the townsfolk for “catching the killer” and Seth and Amelia don’t get arrested. I’m angry that they have found a way out of trouble again, but this does mean that Creeley is no longer suspected of the murders and is released.
The episode ends with Martin Eggers Hyde (Gabriel Mann) showing up in town and driving off with Creeley. I’m very worried what is going to happen to him. Will Hyde send Creeley back to prison? Have him killed? Or something else? I hate that I have to wait another week to find out!
