BOSCH: Investigating season 6 episode 5 ‘Money, Honey’

There’s one that almost got away, but J. Edgar saves the day.

Bosch Season 6 Episode 5: ‘Money, Honey’

Bosch and J. Edgar close in on Mrs. Kent’s suspicious behavior. Charlie Hovan finally gets a meeting with Jacques Avril working undercover as Felix Mariama . Harry talks to two men from Daisy Clayton’s past. 

Harry cautions Maddie about Honey Chandler despite Maddie’s success on her case review. Barrel gets a heartbreaking phone call. Teddy Hobbs may have done worse than panhandling in the nude.  

And in especially good news, there is a wedding!

Emotions run high, time runs short

Bosch and Brenner have a heated exchange about the status of the Kent murder case. Kent claims the case is closed. Harry, however, disagrees and questions the completeness of the file they received on Craver. The two men also disagree about Brennar complaining to Chief Irving about encroaching upon FBI territory with the wire tap activity. Bosch tells Brennar he should take it up directly with Bosch going forward, but Brenner cites chain of command.

Crate and Barrel continue to trade off covering the wire tap feed. They only have 48 hours left per the warrant. Meanwhile, Harry calls the insurance company about Stanley Kent’s policy advising that they not pay out until they finish with the case.

Jerry continues to look through Stanley Kent’s personal files for camera footage from the picture frame. They update Captain Cooper about their hopes of finding video evidence to corroborate their theory about Alicia staging the demand photo. When Jerry asks about updating the Lieutenant, Cooper assures him that he will advise her of the new information.

Cannot trust Cooper

As suspected, Captain Cooper does not update Billets. The Lieutenant realizes she has been has been left out of the loop when she later stops at Jerry’s desk and finds out about the search for the video from the picture frame camera. It’s an embarrassing situation and she pretends that she was informed by Cooper.

Billets confronts Cooper about not keeping her apprised of changes in the case. He acts like he just lost track of time and proceeds to ask her how she feels about her job. She claims that she is perfectly satisfied being at Hollywood Division. Cooper suggests that change is sometimes good.

It sure looks like Cooper is trying to get rid of Grace. Could he be behind the phony crime statistics identified last season? Does he fear that Grace knows too much?

J. Edgar working overtime

Jerry is one busy guy. He continues to pursue Jacques Avril all while aggressively working the Kent murder. One evening Jerry hears a knock on his door. It’s Dwight Wise who has come to show him more photos that he’s taken. Did we really think Dwight would stop looking into his son’s murder?

Dwight has photos of the Jamaicans Winston and Marvel making frequent trips to ACB Auto Repair shop. Remi Toussaint is in the photos. Jerry surmises that Toussaint may be Avril’s right hand man that met with Hovan.

We also learn that Jerry has not spent a lot of time with his sons recently.

“Felix” gets closer

Charlie Hovan makes more progress in getting inside Jacques Avril’s operation. Avril talks to Winston and Toussaint about “Felix Mariama”. Toussaint reports that Felix “moves a lot of product”. He says he is satisfied with Felix’s credentials but assures Avril that he knows it is his decision.

Jacques Avril sets a meeting with Felix at the Sekou Haiti charity office. RHD detectives Espinosa and Conniff watch from outside with J. Edgar. We learn that Sekou translates to “rescue” in Creole. Jerry points out that the charity is partly legitimate and that Avril probably thinks it’s safer to meet with Felix there until he fully vets him. Espinosa comments that the charity is probably also used for laundering money.

Felix and Jacques Avril discuss locations and terms. Avril says the deal is “one for one”. Felix says there should be “a discount for volume” and suggests “one for three”. Avril explains that the terms will depend upon how much Felix invests in the operation and that he likes to “start modestly”.

Wedding bells

Jun and Irv have decided to tie the knot and become husband and wife. The big day approaches and Irving visits the grave site of his late son George. Irving “talks” to George and tells him that he wishes he could be there with them.

The wedding is a small but beautiful affair that appears to be held at their home. Someone named Bill Frank greets talks to the couple in the reception line. Irv refers to Bill as having been his “rabbi” in the LAPD. Bill mentions that he knows Jun encouraged Irv to run for mayor and agrees with her. (One response on quora.com explains a police “rabbi” as being a law enforcement officer’s mentor and someone who helps their career where possible.)

Seeking justice for Daisy

Harry digs further into Daisy Clayton’s murder. He adds her photo to his desk. The detective places his hand on the photo like a sign of his commitment to her.

Bosch visits the man Elizabeth asked him to research. Harry finds Alex Sands at work, a place called BradCo Kitchen and Bath. Alex claims that he and Daisy were simply friends. He was older and protective of her. After Daisy was killed, Alex chose to go on the straight an narrow.

Alex says the last time he saw Daisy she was talking to someone in a white van. He insists he did not see her get into the van, but Harry seems to think otherwise. When asked why he didn’t tell the police about the white van, Alex says it would not have changed Daisy’s outcome and could have been bad for him. Selfish much?

The van man

Bosch reaches out to Detective Anthony Servidone who worked on Daisy’s case originally. Harry meets with Servidone at The Frolic Room bar. The two detectives revisit details from the case. They talk about how Daisy had been washed with bleach and crammed in a plastic tub, which left the tub’s manufacturer logo stamped into her skin.

I Spy: Take a close look at who else is at the bar. It is Executive Producer Henrik Bastin. You may recall that Michael Connelly sat at this same bar in a scene from season 5.

Bosch talks to Servidone about a couple of people referred to in the original investigation. One person was a peeping tom that was deceased having been run over by a tour bus. On the other hand, John McMullen aka “John the Baptist” from the Moonlight Mission was still alive. McMullen runs a shelter for homeless teenagers offering them a place to spend the night if they agree to a baptism.

Harry tracks down the Moonlight Mission and talks to John McMullen about his van and Daisy. The van is no longer in commission, but John said it was operational in 2009. John quickly recalls details from his encounter with Daisy. He reports that she accepted the baptism but left the next morning saying someone was coming to pick her up.

Harry leaves his card with McMullen and tells him to “think hard” and report any more information about Daisy.

Maddie and Money

Maddie and Honey “Money” Chandler meet with Dante Crowe, the inmate released from prison after DNA evidence exonerated him. Chandler explains that the base amount they can sue for is $500,000 and change. Additional exculpatory evidence of harm to Crowe can increase the amount substantially. Examples are Crowe getting pneumonia, food poison and injury from a shank in the prison yard. The amount can go upwards to the tune of 5 to 7 million minus Chandler’s 30%.

Chandler asks Maddie what she knows about Brady violations. Maddie is familiar with situations where a prosecutor withholds information. They suspect this applicable to Crowe’s case where the key witness’ plea deal is absent from the summary. Chandler says they will sue the Los Angeles County.

Maddie’s dad cautions her about thinking too highly of Honey Chandler. He is critical of Chandler profiting from defending criminals. Maddie reminds him that the law says you cannot imprison someone for a crime they did not commit even if they have committed other actual crimes.

Tracking down Teddy

Pierce and Vega receive a new case. The victim is identified as Shaun Terrion with a fatal blow to the head. The detectives recall that Crate and Barrel handled a “territory” dispute betwee Teddy Hobbs and Terrion last year. Teddy claimed that Terrion tried to steal his “spot”.

Pierce and Vega enlist Crate and Barrel’s help in tracking down Teddy as the prime suspect. When Teddy is not at his usual spot, Crate and Barrel think about where else he might be. It would be a place near a coffee shop and a very long traffic light.

Crate heads to the corner of Gower and Hollywood Blvd. He finds Teddy and offers to take him to breakfast

Trivia break: What else happened at Gower and Hollywood Blvd in a prior season of Bosch? It involved an alley. First person to respond gets a shoutout in the next recap.

Crate and Barrel interrogate Teddy at the station. The detectives refer to the transcripts from last year where Hobbs said there would be “mayhem” if Terrion tried to take his spot again. Teddy is very amicable and merely says he “didn’t want to do it” but “had to do it” because Terrion took his spot.

Matching numbers

Crate and Barrel are doing good work monitoring Alicia Kent’s phone calls. Crate identifies a burner number used twice in the middle of the night. Bosch realizes it is the same number that the private investigator Stanley hired had found as well.  This number may very well belong to Alicia’s accomplice.

If Jerry can find incriminating camera footage, they may be able to force Alicia’s hand to give up her collaborator. Jerry has an idea to get a warrant to look at Stanley’s files at the hospital. Time is running short but he thinks that would be a good place to hide the video footage from the spycam.

Billets calls Alicia Kent and asks her to come to the station the next day to pick up Stanley’s belongings. Alicia resists but Billets tells her that her signature is required.

Down to the ‘wire’

Alicia arrives early for her appointment at the station the next day. Billets tries to stall her and asks if she can get her anything. Alicia says she wants to file a complaint about Bosch for meddling with the insurance payout. Billets says that is procedure when a murder has occurred.

Meanwhile, J. Edgar is at the hospital searching Stanley’s work files for the camera footage. He finally finds some but not specific to the evening of the murder. He will have to keep location. Bosch texts him to inform him that Alicia is already at the station. Jerry quickly downloads the files to a flash drive and heads to the station to search further.

Bosch enters the interrogation room and confronts Alicia about the missing robe in the ransom photo. She explains it by saying one of the assailants probably hung it up after the photo was taken. She demands to get Stanley’s things and leave. Just then Jerry enters the room and tells her to sit down.

J. Edgar shows Alicia footage from the night of the murder where she is walking around the house at the time she was supposedly tied up. Alicia then asks for her lawyer.

Honey Chandler arrives at the station asking to see her client. Chandler is Alicia’s attorney.
