Read on for my full investigation of Bosch season 6 episode 4 ‘’Part of the Deal”.

She’s back

Elizabeth Clayton is working at a thrift shop. She appears clean and sober. While working her shift, she spies a man outside the window. He’s watching a young girl on a coin ride outside the store.

The man and presumably his daughter get into a van and leave. Elizabeth runs outside and writes down his plate number. She calls Harry and asks him to run the plate. She believes this man was a friend of Daisy’s.

 A new angle

Harry heads to St. Agatha’s Hospital to look through Stanley Kent’s office and files. While looking around, he receives a call from Detective Pierce. Pierce reports his research findings on Stanley. We learn that Stanley opened a new bank account last spring. Pierce confirmed payments to the private investigator and purchases for a GPS tracking device and a photo frame with a surveillance camera.

Harry looks through Stanley’s desk drawers and comes across a couple of documents. There is a life insurance policy and a patent record. Harry talks to one of Stanley’s colleagues about the patent and probes about the likelihood of an affair. The doctor says he and Stanley talked but never about politics. He being a Democrat and Stanley being a Libertarian did not elicit casual political conversation.

He explains the patent to Harry. The doctor confirms that the patent belongs to Alicia. It’s for a surgery sponge, not fancy, but very lucrative. Stanley received half of the rights to the patent after five years of marriage to Alicia per a prenuptial agreement. The doctor scoffs at the idea of Stanley having an affair especially with their being a morals clause in the prenup.

The doctor tells Harry that he probed Kent about the status of his marriage wanting to know if things were okay. Kent did not give an answer.

Mismatched photos

Harry reviews the suspect board at the station. He notices that Alicia Kent’s robe is on the chair in the ransom photo. Harry remembers retrieving her robe from the closet when he found her tied up. He begins to wonder if the ransom photo was fake. Maybe Alicia Kent is actually behind her husband’s murder and collaborated with a love interest.

Maybe the sovereigns really did have nothing to do with the murder. Then again, the murder weapon was found at the Strout house. Harry pieces together a scenario where Alicia’s lover is part of law enforcement, someone who would have the skill set to plant the murder weapon.

Bosch takes the idea to the chief who allows him to approach Judge Sobel for a warrant to tap Alicia’s phone. Harry requests 2 weeks of phone surveillance. Sobel only gives him 72 hours.

Old times, sad times

Barrel goes to lunch with retired Detective Ryan Rodgers. The two swap stories about old cases at Musso & Frank’s. Rodgers feels warm. When they leave the restaurant, he seems unsteady walking. Rodgers falls to the ground and Barrel calls for help.

Rodgers experienced a heart attack and is hospitalized. Barrel visits him often and encourages Crate and Bosch to go visit him as well. He also has a serious talk with Rodgers about getting healthy even saying he will walk with him at the mall in the mornings to help his friend.

Barrel is monitoring the Alicia Kent phone tap, trading shifts off and on with Crate. Crate notices that his partner seems upset and they talk about Rodgers.

Haunted Harry

One night after reviewing the Daisy Clayton case and researching the plate number from Elizabeth, Harry falls asleep on the couch. He has a very haunting dream.

He walks down a hallway of covered bodies and sees Barrel at the end of the hall. When he enters a room, he sees Daisy Clayton reviewing her own murder book. Daisy is covered in blood. Harry sees a body covered with a sheet. The toe tag says Jane Doe. Then it becomes full of names including his mom’s name, Eleanor’s name and names of females from homicide cases he has investigated.

Look for:  Jane Doe, Marjorie Lowe, Eleanor Wish, Daisy Clayton, Danielle Skylar, Monica Reynolds, Marie Gesto, Charisse Witherspoon, Angela Benton, Rosemary Foxworth, Linda Foster, Catalina Perez, Ana Rodriguez, Stacey Kincaid, Irene Saxon, Lindsey Mathers, Dona Baker, Jody Kremetz, Rebecca Verloren and more.

Harry pulls the sheet from the body and sees Maddie on the table with her throat slit. Bosch is shaken as he awakes and realizes it was a nightmare.

Show me the money

Winston and Marvel pull up to ACB Auto Repair and meet with Remi Toussaint. Winston has stored cash in all four doors of the vehicle. Remi takes the money to Avril at the Crenshaw Bar & Grille. A woman counts the money. Next we flash to Remi getting a cash receipt at a charity organization called Sekou Haiti. I think we can assume their is some money laundering involved.

Finally, half of the money is returned to Winston as “his cut”. Winston seems a little displeased, but Remi reminds him that the arrangement is fifty cents on the dollar.

Moments with Maddie

Maddie and Antonio visit the Record Parlour store. You may recall Harry taking Anita Benitez to the same store in season 3. Is this a popular date venue?

Maddie shows Antonio one of Harry’s favorite Art Pepper records. She tells him about the song Art made about his daughter Patricia. Like Harry, Pepper did not get to see his daughter much in her childhood. Harry could relate to the song. She points out that things are different now with her dad.

I spy: Maddie discovers the same album during her first visit to her dad’s house in season 1. The song “Patricia” is playing on the turntable in scene.

Antonio suggests that he meet Harry. Maddie is a little reluctant but agrees. The next day she makes pancakes for breakfast and shares the news with her dad. Antonio wants to meet him. Harry points out that Maddie is often embarrassed by him. She agrees that she is sometimes, but she wants the two of them to meet.

Things are pretty awkward at the introductory dinner. Maddie tries and fails to order a margarita and her dad says “Nice try.” Antonio tries to impress Harry with chatter about jazz and orders a Fat Tire knowing it’s Harry’s favorite.

Harry corrects Antonio’s jazz references and he’s pretty sure the Fat Tire order was for his benefit. Antonio comes clean and simply shares that he is not good at small talk. Now that’s something the guys do have in common. This breaks the ice and they all laugh about it.

Who’s talking?

Crate and Barrel are monitoring Alicia’s phone but do not have anything helpful yet. Harry decides to “stir the pot”. He goes to Alicia’s house asking for some of the framed photos from her living room table to use in a press conference about her deceased husband.

He also asks why she did not tell him about her patent. She asks why that would matter. He says money can be a motive. She looks uncomfortable and insists that cesium was the motive. He thanks her for the photos and leaves.

Once Bosch is gone, Alicia calls Special Agent in Charge Jack Brenner and reports that Bosch was just there. She sounds very nervous.

Oh, Brenner would be able to plant a weapon, right?

Harry decides to take the information to Agent Reece. She visits Brenner and tells him Bosch suspects that Alicia and someone in law enforcement were in cahoots to murder Stanley. She leaves Brenner’s name out of it but tells him that LAPD has tapped Alicia’s phone.

Brenner calmly asks a series of questions. He then tells Reece to notify him if Bosch says anything else. Later, Brenner calls Chief Irving and tells him that Bosch needs to stand down. Irving says he will address it. Irving then calls Bosch and does the opposite telling Harry to “keep the pressure on”.

Bosch takes the photo frames to J. Edgar who sees the camera discreetly embedded in the corner of one of the frames. He tells Bosch that the video would not be stored on the frame but probably in the cloud or offsite location.

Who is Felix Mariama?

Charlie Hovan requests a meeting with Jacques Avril. He goes undercover as Felix Mariama. He is met instead with Remi Toussaint, Avril’s right-hand man. Felix tells Remi that “[he] move[s] a lot of product”. Remi inquires why he wants to meet with Avril if that is indeed the case.

Felix takes credit for a recent murder of a massage parlor owner in Koreatown. He says the owner was his partner and became greedy. Now he needs a new partner.

Charlie updates J. Edgar on Felix’s meeting with Avril’s second in command. Remi reports his findings about Felix to Avril. Avril tells him to investigate Felix further and returns to reading from La Recherche du Temps Perdu by Proust.
