Some actual police work

The dirty cops sit outside an apartment building to infiltrate a trafficking ring. The younger one tells the older one that he is nervous that Bosch is asking questions about Lexi Park’s watch and wants to know what they are going to do about it. He gets the phone notification that his “date” is ready, and he heads up to apartment 4 acting as a john responding to an ad. The young cop and the woman discuss the transaction and he gives her cash.

The woman takes the money to a different apartment, presumably that of the pimp, and hands over the money. The older cop captures incriminating photos from the car. We can only guess that the younger cop leaves before she returns. The two detectives later meet with their supervisor about the trafficking organization.

It becomes personal

Later that day the older cop breaks into Harry’s house and searches the home wearing gloves. He finds a photo of Harry and Maddie and snaps a copy to share with his partner. They decide to use this information to get closer to Harry via Maddie.

The detectives share their findings from the trafficking operation with their next in command. We learn that this would be turned over to DHS, but the older detective asks to help since it’s likely a multi-location search. He requests that they pair up with Hollywood Division CRU to make the bust. The request is approved.

Harry learns more

Meanwhile, Harry learns even more about the watch. He pays a visit to Feldmar where the watch was sent for repair. He speaks with the manager about the history of the watch. They discuss Lexi Parks requesting repair even though the watch is still registered as belonging to Dr. Schubert who purchased it originally.

Dr. Schubert’s wife claimed that the watch and other jewelry was stolen. They can surmise that the jewelry was not stolen, but instead Schubert was paying a debt that he did not want to disclose to his wife. Harry asks for Schubert’s phone number.

The Nguyen brothers

We see Honey mailing a single blue envelope by dropping it in a blue postal box outside of a public building. This seems like an odd place for her to be dropping mail. She gets a call from Harry who explains that he needs an attorney. What now?

Bosch has been contacted by Detectives Duran and Santana who are working the Lexi Parks murder. They want to know why Harry’s business card was found at the scene of the Nguyen brothers’ murder.

Harry assures them that he does not know who murdered the Nguyens, explaining that he was only there to inquire about the watch Lexi’s husband purchased from there. Honey decides Harry has said enough and ends the meeting. Harry talks to her after and is concerned that he may have led the murderers to the brothers. He becomes increasingly nervous about being followed. Bosch makes sure that Honey still has her gun, and she says she will also ask Mo to check her vehicle for tracking devices.

Speaking of Mo

Mo is busy working on obtaining employee credentials for Jade’s ex-boyfriend at Pharmawell. The tech wiz has a board with two columns labeled “WANTED” and “Found” “PWNED” (corrected 11/3/23, click the link to learn more about the hacker term “pwn” related to defeating someone. Thank you to Laura H. for the correction). He works at his computer moving sticky notes from one column to another until all have been “found” “PWNED”.

Later, Mo enjoys some jazz with Jade and gives her a flash drive with the medical files that her ex stole. She wants to make sure there are no backups or copies elsewhere. He assures her that he cleared them all. She calls him a “sweetheart” and “Mo Bassi, MVP”.

The ladies bond

It’s official! Paulina has returned to work. Maddie welcomes her back with a Trejos Donuts gift card.

Maddie gets a visit from BSS (Behavioral Science Services) about the status of her return to work.  says she is sleeping better and wants to be on the job. She talks to Reina and Paulina as they share donuts at Trejos.

The officers talk about looking after one another. Maddie tears up and hugs them both. Oh, and Reina has a powdered sugar ‘stache!

Time with Dad

Maddie enjoys a visit with her dad. Harry asks about Rico and Maddie’s plans to find her own apartment. He also jokingly gives her a hard time saying how Coltrane misses her. Maddie asks about Harry’s case. He tells her about the Nguyen brothers being murdered and how he thinks that may be connected to Lexi Parks.

The blue envelope

L.A. Times reporter Scott Anderson is the recipient of the blue envelope that Honey mailed earlier. He opens it to find a copy of the subpoena for Honey to testify at the FBI’s grand jury for investigation of the Carl Rogers’ murder. Of course, the document also mentions all files related to her civil case against Carl Rogers. Anderson shows it to his editor who allows him to proceed with a story and ask Honey about it.

The reporter pays a visit to Honey at her office. She asks where he got the subpoena, giving no indication that she sent it herself. He asks about her response to the grand jury and wants to know if she took the Fifth. She simply says she “declined to comment”. He tells her that the story will run the next day if she decides to talk further.

Press Conference

A media circus waits outside Honey’s home after the story breaks the next day. She claims that someone is trying to “destroy her reputation” and interfere with her work.

Honey’s anonymous leak to Anderson has the FBI in a pickle. Baron tells Agents Long and Jones that the AUSA believes their office leaked the subpoena. He shares that jurors have become frightened and left. The grand jury is currently on hold.

Trafficking organization bust

The older dirty cop (who we soon learn has the last name Ellis) coordinates with Vasquez on the search for the trafficking prostitution operation. Ellis suggests that Maddie works communications with him from the undercover truck. The officers are assigned different duties and locations. The younger dirty copy (who we soon learn has the last name Long) will capture the violation on wire.

In the communications truck, Ellis tries to fake bond with Maddie in an effort to get information about Harry’s case. He gives her a cup of coffee and comments on how new officers often think of police work as more of a gig than a career. Maddie tells him this reminds her of her father. He comments that her father believes Foster is innocent. Maddie shares that Harry thinks two other murders may be connected. Ellis responds with faux surprise.

Time for the arrest

It is time to arrest the pimp and also, surprisingly to Maddie, the “bottom” or lead prostitute in the organization. Officers gear up with helmets and bulletproof vests to approach apartment 2.

Ellis slams the pimp into a post and kicks him once on the ground, all while exclaiming that he “loves this f-ing job”. Maddie’s eyes widen a little. After the scene calms down, Ellis commends Vasquez and Maddie on their work. He also pulls Maddie aside and it what appears to be a veiled threat, tells her “What we see here, stays here”. Maddie replies saying the experience has been “educational”.

We have names

Meanwhile, Bosch receives a text from Detective Pierce finally identifying the two dirty cops by name, Ellis and Long with the Ad Vice department, with Ellis being the older one.

Harry gets Mo on the job of getting more information on Ellis and Long while he attempts to call Dr. Schubert at the Center for Cosmetic Creations. He learns that Schubert is doing procedures and is currently unavailable.

Mo uncovers that Ellis and Long have been partners for six years. Harry correctly guesses that they were assigned to the “Bad Cats” detail, a group with skillset similar to SIS making them very adept at surveillance.

In other news, Honey picks up James Allen’s belongings from his friend, the bartender at The Well. We got another shot of those “Rainbow” brand condoms now in her trunk. She promises to get the items to Allen’s sister.

Group meeting

Earlier in the day, Harry received a visit from Lexi’s assistant who stumbled upon Lexi’s appointment book in her own office. Harry flips through the book and finds a flash drive with recordings. We hear Lexi Parks threatening the Nguyen brothers with a formal investigation into stolen property at the Wanna Buy A Watch store.

Honey, Harry and Mo meet at her house to go over the latest findings on the Foster case and the importance of Lexi’s threat to investigate the origins of the watch. Harry also confirms that Ellis and Long had been using James Allen as a confidential informant, thus the sudden break in arrests. Harry reminds the group that they also have the witness who heard two car doors when Allen’s body was dropped.

At first, Ellis and Long are not sure where Harry is. They wonder if he has found and removed the tracking device from the Jeep. They definitely agree that he is getting too close with all his recent findings. If he’s not at home, where would he be? Ellis correctly suspects that Harry is at Honey’s house. The tracker did not show him there since he rode with Mo in his car. So, now we have Ellis and Long watching from outside Honey’s house.

Back to the jewelry store

Harry decides that he and Mo need to go to the jewelry store and look for any ownership paperwork. They look around the store and Harry remembers the creak in the floor behind the counter. He pulls up the rug and there is the safe in the floor. Mo is able to break into the safe by resetting the internal reset button. There they find cash or “go money” and a CD. They take the CD and leave.

Ellis and Long continue to follow Harry and Mo. Ellis still thinks they will be unable to find anything that ties them to the watch. He just might be underestimating our Harry Bosch. We can only assume that Ellis and Long were extorting money from Dr. Schubert and that the watch was one of their extortion collections.

“I miss Vin Scully”

Mo and Harry talk in the car. Harry begins thinking about all the twos associated with the case – two Nguyen brothers killed by two men in ski masks, 2 car doors heard at Allen’s body drop, two dirty cops. It reminds him of the late Vin Scully saying “deuces are wild” during Dodger games when there were groups of two, like two strikes, two men on base, etc. Harry laments the passing of Vin Scully.

Just then a loud engine is heard pulling close to Mo’s car. It is Ellis and Long. They are speeding up awfully close to Mo and Harry, and the screen fades to black.

Are Ellis and Long planning to run into Mo’s car or just give them a scare? We will have to check out Bosch: Legacy S2 episode 8 to find out what happens next.
