Honey and Harry continue to dig deeper on David Foster’s defense. Meanwhile, Mo takes on a personal mission for his new friend Jade. Maddie struggles with her victim impact statement and ongoing PTSD from the abduction. Finally, Ellis and Long are awful people!

Another extortion

The episode opens on a woman complimenting the services of Dr. Schubert who has made a house call. The woman is very pleased with her lip enhancement and pays Dr. Schubert in cash. Schubert gives the patient care instructions and gets in his car to leave.

Dr. Schubert does not get very far, though. Ellis and Long arrive in their loud muscle car and block Schubert’s exit. They take the cash, which feels light. We are not sure what Ellis and Long have on Schubert, but the doctor is clearly paying for it. Ellis tells the doctor that the vig has increased.

What is “the vig”? I was not familiar with the term. Perhaps, if I were a gambler, I might have known.

Short for “vigorish”, Merriam-Webster defines it here.

Matthew is busted

Busted by Honey and Harry that is. Matthew receives a text about the “white flower”. He recognizes the message as code for meeting the Feds at the Fiora Blanca restaurant. Matthew leaves for the restaurant. To his surprise, it is not the FBI agents there waiting for him but Honey and Harry instead.

Matthew describes his previous interactions with the Feds. At first, he denied knowing anything about the shipping container diagram but later confessed that he received it from Honey. He did not say for certain that it was from Simon Wakefield’s phone but most certainly claimed he did not know the whereabouts of Wakefield’s phone. The last part rings true since Honey gave Matthew the schematic but not the phone it had been stored on.

Matthew asks if he will be let go from the firm. Honey tells him she does not know yet. But after leaving the restaurant, Honey assures Harry that she still does not trust Matthew.

While still at the table, Harry receives admonishments from law enforcement contacts for his role in the defense of David Foster. Honey also receives a message. The prosecution is trying to have Harry removed from Foster’s case for posing as an interested buyer to access Lexi’s home, which is now for sale.

Jade offers details

Mo joins his new friend Jade Quinn for drinks. The pair tries out various offerings on the menu and Mo inquires further about Jades complicated relationship status. The mystery woman explains that her disgruntled ex-boyfriend, who works for a pharmaceutical company, stole her family’s medical records and has threatened to share them.

Mo’s first thought is for Jade to take them back, but Jade explains that she does more writing about hackers than doing actual hacking herself. They sample another drink. Later, we see Mo listening to Jade’s podcast.

Maddie’s headspace

Harry meets Maddie at the park. He wants to let her know about his encounter with Deputy Harrick, Lexi Parks husband. She knows this will not sit well with her law enforcement colleagues.

Suddenly, Maddie receives a message from the DA’s office. She goes to the police station where DDA Anna Keiser, a victim witness coordinator, is waiting to speak with her. Keiser encourages Maddie to attend the sentencing as it could help get the toughest sentence for Dockweiler. She also tells Maddie that victims can benefit from some closure by going through the impact statement process. Maddie insists that she is not a victim and exits the meeting.

While getting ready for her shift, Vasquez asks Maddie how she is doing because she seems distracted. She also assures Maddie that she will not say anything about Harry working for the defense. Maddie points out that she just said something then.

Later, Maddie has a nightmarish daydream about approaching a driver in a vehicle but the driver is Dockweiler.

A case for Harry

Meanwhile, Honey makes a case for Harry to stay on as investigator for David Foster’s defense. Judge Simon Newland presides over the objections of the prosecution. Newland declines the DA’s request to remove Harry as Harry did nothing illegal to access the home.

Judge Newland’s bigger concern is getting an update on plea negotiations for the case. He believes the evidence suggests a slam dunk for the prosecution and does not want to waste any unnecessary time on the case going to trial. Honey objects but ultimately agrees that she will share the possibility of a plea deal with Foster and advise him with her best information.

A case for David

Honey does meet with David Foster and his wife to discuss the option of accepting a plea offer. She explains that they only need one juror to doubt his guilt, but David is very stressed about his DNA being found at the scene. Honey talks about working on alternative theory about the crime and encourages him to think about what accepting a plea would suggest about him. She talks about people always wondering if he truly did it if he does accept a lighter charge and sentence.

David’s wife wants to proceed with trial, and David finally agrees to do just that.

Watch talk

Harry gets out there and does the work just like his motto suggests. He takes phone logs for Lexi Park to Mo for review. Harry wants Mo to identify any calls related to her watch. Mo realizes this could be a lengthy but tedious task and reminds Harry jokingly that some people have a life outside of work.

Pierce and Vega

Harry requests additional information from Pierce and Vega who somewhat begrudgingly oblige him. They allow Harry to take a look at the murder book for James Allen. It notes that Allen had repeated arrests over a seven-year period before the arrests stopped the last three years. Harry suspects that Allen began serving as a confidential informant for someone who was, in exchange, keeping Allen’s record clean.

Pierce and Vega confirm the location of the body dump. Harry reviews photos of the victim and his hotel. Harry observes that there are no defensive wounds on Allen’s body. Pierce points out the bulk size container of condoms in Allen’s hotel room, a room which Harry points out is now empty.

Knocking on doors

Well, not knocking, exactly, more like trying to buzz in. Harry visits the location where Allen’s body was found and attempts to get inside the building to talk to potential witnesses. A woman lets him in, and he asks her if she heard anything the night the body was found. She does not recall anything but mentions that her grandson heard “dos matadores”.

The grandson speaks with Harry confirming that he heard the sound of the body landing on the ground. Then he heard two car doors close before the vehicle with a loud rumbling engine pulled away.

Harry reports back to Honey that there may be two killers. He tells her that James Allen was unconscious at the time of strangulation. Harry also asks her to make sure that the analyst checks the crime scene DNA for condom trace evidence. Could Foster’s DNA have been planted at the scene via a condom used with Allen?

Mo wants to help Jade

Mo has another outing with Jade. They swap stories about their younger days and early hacking handles. Jade says she was called “A+” and expelled for changing her friends’ grades. Mo simply shares that his given name is Maurice.

Mo also has something else to tell Jade. He mentions that he wants to help retrieve her family’s medical records that are being digitally held hostage by her ex-boyfriend. Jade is shocked that he believes he could bypass security at a pharmaceutical company.

Mo’s mission

As such Mo goes on a complex and risky mission at the ex-boyfriend’s company named PharmaWell. Mo poses as James Booker, a contract building inspector performing tasks normally associated with the fire department. Mo builds a rapport with the staff member assigned to escort him through the building. He even goes as far as sharing family photos in the elevator so he can get close enough to the escort to retrieve his access badge credentials.

Mo plays it super smooth responding to any issue with confidence. For instance, when the building escort notes that Mo forgot to log something on a clipboard, Mo simply explains that it was actually a test to see if his guide noticed the omission.

Finally, Mo and his escort reach the PharmaWell floor. Mo spies the Telecom IT room next to the restroom. He requests a bathroom break where he generates an access card with the information he downloaded in the elevator. Mo is in the server room. He works his magic manipulating different equipment before exiting the server room just as his escort rounded the corner. His reason for taking so long? No paper towels in the men’s room!

Sharing the news

Mo shares the news with Jade. She is stunned that he successfully planted a jump box at the facility. He explains that his final step is to get the ex-boyfriend’s credentials and retrieve the records. Jade wonders how he can do that, but Mo is confident that his plan will work.

The Well

Honey and Harry visit the venue called The Well where James Allen picked up clients and sold drugs. They speak with the bartender who shares that he was the one who cleaned out Allen’s hotel room. Harry asks about Allen’s most recent client and the bartender gives them Matt’s name and indicates that he is a regular at The Well.

Harry waits around for Matt to speak with him. Matt reports exactly what we saw in an earlier episode. Allen left the hotel room when eh he saw bright headlights and heard a loud vehicle. Allen never returned. Likewise, Matt left as well not wanting to get involved in anything problematic.

Night before sentencing

Maddie shows up on Honey’s doorstep the night before Dockweiler’s sentencing. She wants Honey’s opinion on giving her statement at court. Honey leaves the decision to Maddie but emphasizes that she should not allow Dockweiler to have any control over her.

They also share a bittersweet moment when Maddie asks Honey if she ever wishes she could reach out to her mother for advice. We get the feeling that Maddie is especially missing her mom, Eleanor, at a time like this.

Day of sentencing

Maddie does choose to give a statement at the sentencing. She tells Dockweiler to look at her and face what he has done. She emphasizes that Dockweiler’s evil behavior does not define any of those that he hurt. On the other hand, his choices do define the type of person that he is. She holds no punches in regard to expectations for his sentencing.

Outside the courtroom, Maddie and Harry share a big hug. They both agree that the trauma is not over but that this day in court does help some. Back at the station Vasquez tells Maddie that she heard that she was amazing in court and tells her that she is always available if Maddie wants a listening ear.

Harry to the watch store

Mo’s phone log review has turned up a call to the Wanna Buy A Watch store 4 days prior to her murder. Minutes after the call to the watch store, Lexi called a separate repair shop. She then made another call to Wanna Buy A Watch.

Harry arrives to the Wanna Buy A Watch store hoping to get more information that could be important to the case. Peter Nguyen shares limited information with Harry noting privacy protocols for the customers. Nguyen simply reports that the watch was procured from an estate sale and sold to the customer. Harry leaves his contact card but notes the creak beneath Peter’s feet. Viewers recall that as the location of the safe in the floor.

Ellis and Long respond

Ellis and Long surveil Bosch’s store visit from across the street. Long expresses anxiety about Bosch’s interest in the watch store. They watch Bosch leave and observe his location on the tracking app. Then they notice Paul Nguyen arriving to the store.

Next thing you know, two armed men break in through the back entrance of the store wearing masks. Ellis swiftly removes his mask and demands that Peter tell him what he shared with Bosch, or he will shoot his brother Paul. Peter complies and Ellis says he believes him. Then Ellis immediately proceeds to shoot both Paul and Peter while Long breaks into cases mimicking a robbery scene.

Again, these two are truly awful people.

What is Harry on to that is making Ellis and Long so nervous? Will Mo be able to complete his mission on behalf of Jade?
