Bosch: Legacy Episode 6 ‘Chain of Authenticity’

Surprising details surface in the aftermath of Whitney Vance’s passing. Tragedy befalls Hollywood station and Maddie fears for a friend. Carl Rogers tries to evade the U.S. Attorney’s office and the Ivanovich brothers reunite with dear old dad.
Harry shares emotional details of his past with Maddie, which bonds them even closer. A trusted friend guards important information for Harry. Honey gets way too close for comfort.

Refresh your memory:
- Keating is Carl Rogers’ attorney.
- Lev Ivanovich is the “muscle” in the pair of Ivanovich brothers with Alex Ivanovich being the “brains”.
- John Creighton is the VP of Trident Security, the firm that works for Vance Engineering. John Creighton was the one who reached out to Harry on Mr. Vance’s behalf.
- Paulina Calderon is Maddie’s fellow training officer from the police academy.
- Ida Porter has been Whitney Vance’s personal assistant for almost 40 years.
- Eleanor Wish was Harry’s ex-wife and someone whom he still cared deeply for. Eleanor was Maddie’s mother. She was murdered in Bosch season 4, having recently started collaborating with the FBI on a case.
Be on time
Punctuality is important whether you are turning yourself in or evading authorities.
Carl Rogers stays in a safe house overnight. He is due at the U.S. Attorney’s office the next morning. His attorney, Keating, calls Honey seeking assurances about his client’s safety. Honey has little sympathy and reminds him to be on time.
Keating enters the safe house to speak with Carl. The attorney bypasses the two handlers to talk to Carl privately. Keating gives Rogers a small vial of powder assuring him that it will be enough. And much like Honey, Keating implores Rogers to be on time.
Got freight?
Honey’s colleague Matthew figures out that the blueprint from Wakefield’s phone is for a shipping container. They identify the tracking number and Honey calls Harry to tell him there are two containers being picked up, one in Wilmington and one in Long Beach.
Honey and Harry go to Wilmington and Long Beach, respectively, to investigate. Harry does his best John Creighton impression again to inquire about the container at Long Beach. The manager tells him that the container in question has already been picked up. When Bosch learns that it was a “modified” container, he is curious to learn more.
As a courtesy, the manager shows Harry a different modified container. An engineer who works on the modifications tells them that the container picked up earlier had an air conditioning unit but not a freezer like most requests for modification.
Harry calls Honey to update her on his findings. She assumes the container at Wilmington has also been picked up already. They consider the idea that Carl Rogers is planning to travel in the container to Vietnam where there is no extradition treaty with the United States. Harry leaves his location, but Honey decides to look around more at Wilmington
Hunting Rogers
Brothers Alex and Lev are searching for Carl Rogers. They arrive at the home of Jasmine, Carl’s girlfriend. They intimidate Jasmine and threaten her family but leave her unharmed believing she really does not know where Carl is.
The brothers go to a deli and reunite with their father who has arrived from Russia. The three men drive to Keating’s home to get the location of Rogers. Keating is stunned when he looks up and sees the Ivanovich family inside his home.
The elder Ivanovich demands to know where Carl is. We do not see the interrogation, but we do see Keating’s body wrapped in a rug being tossed in the back of their vehicle.
Meanwhile, Carl has offered coffee to the two handlers at the safe house. When the federal escorts arrive to pick up Carl, he is nowhere to be seen. Instead, they see the two handlers passed out on the floor having been drugged with the mysterious powder Carl put in the coffee.
Close encounter
Back at the shipyard, Honey enters a building through an open door. As she is walking through, she spots the other PLANO container. She draws her gun from her purse and slowly opens the container door. Sure enough, the container has been modified with air conditioning and holds plenty of water and snacks for a long journey.
Honey hears someone coming and quickly exits the container. She hides behind pallets of freight. A vehicle backs in through a garage door. The Ivanovich brothers carry Keating’s body into the container. Lev moves the vehicle out of the garage and joins his father and brother in the container.
Honey tries to send a text to Harry but stops abruptly when another vehicle pulls up to the garage. Carl Rogers exits the vehicle and enters the container. He looks very pleased with himself for pulling off his escape. Carl opens the storage room in the back and is blindsided by the Ivanovich family.
Father Ivanovich shoots Carl twice and each brother fires a shot as well. They leave Carl in the container and leave. Honey opens the door to look inside the container after they leave. She appears unnerved by the gruesome sight, closes the door and leaves.

Just between us
Honey and Harry share a nightcap in her backyard as they talk about Carl’s murder. They agree to keep the news to themselves. Harry insists that Maddie not find out about what happened, and Honey agrees.
In other news, Honey has “hired” Bosch for $1 to investigate the murder of Dr. Manny Basu. If Jeffrey is innocent like they believe, the real murderer is still at large. Harry agrees and will review the discovery material.
Honey and Marty talk about the disappearance Rogers and Keating. Marty mentions how the feds must be really embarrassed about losing Rogers. He also implies that they are probably both dead. Honey plays along never letting on that she knows everything. Marty asks about the civil suit wondering if Bella could still be awarded a judgement from Carl Rogers’ estate.
Boots on the run
Maddie and Paulina run a 10k to see if they qualify for a special relay race from Baker to Las Vegas. Officer Perez, or Rico as we know him, is recording the times for the “boots” from Hollywood station. Rico and Maddie have some flirtation.
Neither Maddie nor Paulina qualifies for the relay, but Rico suggests that Maddie be an alternate. She will give it some thought.
Mysterious envelope
Harry finds a bubble envelope in his stack of mail. It is not something he was expecting. He opens to find a handwritten will from Whitney Vance. The will names Harry as the executor. The heirloom gold pen from Whitney’s office is also in the mailer.
Bosch talks to Honey about the will. She explains that a handwritten will is also referred to as a holographic will. Honey tells him that a holographic will must be verified through a specific “chain of authenticity” (see episode title) that includes the handwriting and the pen used.
Harry says Ida can advise on the authenticity of the pen. Mr. Vance noted in his letter that Ida was told to mail the package to Harry. Honey notices that Ida is named as one of the beneficiaries. She is to be given ten million dollars.
Harry and Honey talk about the need to protect the original copy. Harry says they need copies including decoys to be safe. Later, Harry puts one copy in his safe deposit box at the bank.
Harry gives the original to one of his most trusted friends, more like a brother. Harry meets J. Edgar in a secluded area at night to give him the package with the will. J. Edgar promises to keep the package safe by booking it as evidence in one of his cases at RHD.
Harry also meets with another colleague from his LAPD days, medical examiner Gary Potter. Potter tells him that the autopsy for Vance has not yet been finalized. Potter mentions possible evidence of foul play but nothing conclusive at this time.
Officer down
Maddie’s fellow boot, Officer Paulina Calderon is driving when she and her partner see a driver run a stop sign. They turn on their siren indicating for the car to pull over. Paulina’s TO, Officer Templin, approaches the car first and then signals for Paulina to approach the driver.
We see the driver holding both hands on the wheel. Then suddenly he grabs a gun and shoots Paulina multiple times. She falls to the ground and Officer Templin calls for help.
Everyone at Hollywood station scatters to leave and go help their fellow officer. Lt. Thorne stops Maddie on her way out and tells her to remain at the station and ask Sgt. Mankiewicz for instructions. Mank asks Maddie to join RHD in going to notify Paulina’s parents of the shooting.
Painful memories
Harry hears the news on the radio of a rookie female officer being shot. He is overcome with fear for Maddie. He calls her immediately and is relieved when she picks up at the station.
Maddie asks Harry how she should approach the notification. He tells her, “You’ll find the words.” Harry flashes back in his mind to the day he had to go to Maddie’s school to tell her that Eleanor had been murdered.
Maddie says goodbye to her dad. Harry sits in the car as tears well up in his eyes. Between the memory of Eleanor’s death and the idea of Maddie being shot in the line of duty, Harry is wrought with sadness.
Maddie joins an RHD detective in notifying Mrs. Calderon about Paulina. Paulina’s mother requests that they drive her to see Paulina immediately.
Back off
After Harry talks to Maddie, he notices that he still being followed by Creighton’s cronies. Harry has had enough. He drives straight to Jon Creighton’s home to tell him to stop tracking him.
Creighton fires back telling Harry that he is no longer employed by Mr. Vance and that he needs to stop investigating on his behalf. The way he speaks to Harry can be construed as a threat or a bribe. Creighton tells Harry that they have even been watching Honey.
Meanwhile, Honey is at her office shredding all the documents pertaining to the vendetta against Rogers.

Shared grief
Maddie visits Harry at his office that night. He knows she is shaken about Paulina and wonders if it changes her thoughts about being a police officer. She confirms that is does not change her mind about her chosen career.
Maddie asks about the time Harry was shot in the line of duty. He hesitates to talk about it, but Maddie really wants to understand what Paulina is experiencing.
Harry proceeds to share his story. He was on a task force with the FBI in pursuit of a group of thieves using underground tunnels, the case that was made into the movie that paid for Harry’s house. When the authorities finally caught them, two of them ran into the tunnel and Harry followed.
One of the thieves shot Harry and then came closer planning to shoot Harry again to make sure he did not survive. Harry thought he was going to die, but his partner arrived just in time to take down the shooter.
Harry’s partner on the task force was Maddie’s mother, FBI Agent Eleanor Wish. Maddie is moved to tears thinking about her mom saving her dad’s life. While Harry did go on to marry Eleanor, he admits that he had already fallen in love with Eleanor before she rescued him. He shares that he “just didn’t know it yet.”
Maddie looks out Harry’s window and tells him that she misses his balcony view. Harry is deep in his memory of Eleanor and responds, “I miss her, too.”
