Let us investigate further the events of Bosch: Legacy episode 3.

Refresh your memory:

‘Willy’ or won’t he talk

Honey Chandler enters the kitchen to pour her morning coffee. A noise startles her. She visualizes masked Charles Kipps pointing a gun at her and then she imagines firing back at him. Honey snaps backs to reality and we see a lawn worker blowing leaves on her patio.

Honey and Harry are on their way to the Terminal Island Correctional Institution to meet with Willy Datz. They want to find out who threatened him causing him to withdraw his testimony. On the drive over, Harry congratulates Honey on helping Jeffrey Herstadt and admits he may have been wrong about Jeffrey.

Willy Datz arrives to the meeting room looking rough and acting flippant. He is not inclined to give them any information until Honey pulls out a photo of an Eme prisoner she represented who is housed in the same cell block. Honey says her former client owes her a favor. She hints that this guy could be good or bad for Willy. This prompts Willy to speak up.

Datz reveals that an attorney representing Russian mobster Alex Ivanovich threatened his family.

Back at the office, Marty fears that Honey crossed an ethical line, but Honey insists she did not actually threaten Datz.

From Trejos to trauma

Maddie gathers her gear for her shift and says hello to an Officer Perez. There is an awkward exchange where it’s not clear if they are talking about going on a date. Maddie says she has to head out. Perez follows up telling her that some of the “boots” are getting together for drinks that week. He invites her to join them. Maddie has a little smile on her face as she walks away. I guess Maddie is single again!

Reina and Maddie have friendly conversation over confections at Trejo’s, the strikingly pink donut shop. Vasquez learns for the first time that Maddie’s mother was an FBI agent. The two officers talk college and why they chose law enforcement. They get a call about a rape victim and Reina tells Maddie that this is why she became a police officer.

Maddie wants to help

Maddie and Reina arrive at apartment. Preeda Saetang is the young woman who was assaulted. Maddie takes notes while Vasquez interviews her. Maddie canvasses the building and places tent cards for evidence collection.

The officers speak with Detective Coleman who has caught the case. Maddie catches herself stepping outside of her “lane” after she mentions evidence she noticed in the apartment. Coleman stays at the scene while Reina and Maddie give Preeda Saetang a ride to the hospital.

Maddie feels bad for the young victim crying in the backseat. At the end of their shift, Maddie tells her T.O. that she gave Preeda Saetang her phone number if she wants some support. Reina is adamant that Maddie should not have done that. She insists that Maddie refer any call to the assigned detective.

Continue the search

Bosch meets with his tech guru Mo to research Dominick Santanello online. Mo discovers that Dominick never renewed his driver’s license. Harry thinks about the timeframe and suspects that Dominick served in Vietnam. Harry directs Mo to the Vietnam War Wall of Faces and they learn that Dominick was killed in action shortly before he would have turned 20 years old.

Later that evening, Bosch reviews Dominick’s memorial page. He notices a recurring entry from someone named Olivia. Harry sends an online message to Olivia asking her to call him.

The next day, Bosch goes to meet privately with Whitney Vance at Valhalla Cemetery after asking Mo to check his Jeep to make sure there is no tracker on it. Harry gives Vance the news about Dominick. Vance wonders if Bosch was close to his own father. Bosch tells him that he never knew his father.

Vance asks Harry to continue investigating to learn more about Vance’s only son. Harry agrees.

As Harry leaves the cemetery, he sees that he is again being followed. He loses the tail with a few swift turns.

Listening in and running out

Mo reports to Harry that Carl is on his way downtown. Bosch arrives at the same location working his way upstairs trying to evade cameras with a ball cap hiding his eyes.

Harry stands outside the room where Rogers and his financial advisor, Simon Wakefield are meeting with Alex and Lev Ivanovich.

Rogers agrees to return their ten million dollar buy-in for an investment before Carl went to prison. The brothers correct Rogers insisting that he owes them forty million after interest. Carl argues that it was not a loan and that his businesses have suffered due to his time behind bars. The brothers refuse to negotiate. Carl explains that he cannot safely generate that much cash so quickly. It would create a red flag for the “operation”.

Carl says he will get the money. He and Simon leave. A security guard notices Harry on camera and alerts the Ivanovich brothers.

An impressive high-octane chase ensues as security and the brothers chase after Bosch. The chase leads to the rooftop where Harry jumps to the next building. He runs through the next building and exits near an approaching van. Bosch shimmies over the van and escapes into a crowd of people. But security still has a shot of Harry on camera.

Records and research

The next day Maddie stops by Harry’s office to bring some of his favorite vinyl and his stereo. Bosch is thrilled. They make plans for dinner later in the week.

Later, Bosch meets with Detective Bulgakov from the Russian Unit of the Sheriff’s department. He obtains photos and intelligence about the very dangerous Ivanovich brothers. The detective says that Alex Ivanovich is “the brains” and brother Lev is “the muscle”. Bulgakov warns Harry to be careful.

Harry meets with Honey to review the information gleaned from his surveillance and meeting with Bulgakov. He confirms that Rogers owes the Ivanovich brothers an enormous amount of money. That’s why the brothers threatened Datz; they wanted Carl free so they could get their money.

Harry asks Honey if she learned anything about the businesses from the photo he snapped of the directory for the building the Ivanovich brothers use. Honey reports that they are “fronts”.

Then Harry notices the name SOKOL on the list. He remembers that Mo traced the purchase of the burner phone Carl called in prison to the SOKOL station in Bakersfield. It dawns on him that Rogers was calling the brothers from prison.

Olivia calls

Harry gets a call from Olivia. He wants to meet with her to talk about Dominick. She agrees.

Bosch leaves and notices that again he is being followed. Once again, he manages to lose the tail but decides to rent a different car, thinking his Jeep must be compromised.

Harry drives north to meet Olivia. We then see John Creighton talking to two security employees who are still following Bosch – from the air.

Harry still has the moves as he dodges the Ivanovich brothers in the fashion district. Maddie proves that she inherited the “can’t let go” mentality of her father when she feels compelled to give Preeda Saetang her phone number. Honey makes a bold move with her bluff to Willy Datz.
