Let us investigate further the events of Bosch: Legacy episode 7 ‘One of Your Own’.

Refresh your memory:

Not what Honey expected

Honey meets with her therapist, Dr. Estevez, telling him that Carl Rogers is no longer in the United States. Of course, we know that Carl Rogers is also no longer breathing.

Honey struggles with her lack of closure on Rogers. She had hoped she would feel more relief and be approaching a sense of normalcy. The truth is, she still does not feel like herself. She wonders if she will ever feel at peace again.

Then she learns that Datz has been murdered by a fellow inmate. This does not bode well for Honey, who kind of, sort of, but not exactly threatened Datz by telling him that Arraya owed her a favor. Of course, she also suggested to Datz that she could ask Raul to make sure nothing happened to him. Regardless of the shade of gray that Honey was using, Datz did fall for the bluff and gave up the information she needed about Rogers.

Marty is concerned that Honey may have come too close to crossing a line with her bluff. He cannot help but wonder it was her former client, Raul Arraya. Honey insists it was not an actual threat and that she never spoke with Arraya. She tells Marty that “[she] would never suborn murder”.

FBI presses Honey for details

Two young FBI agents visit Rose & Associates to speak with Honey. She refuses to comment on her visit to Datz at Terminal Island. If they want her to speak, they will have to serve a subpoena. But somehow the agents are able to run through the discussion as if they heard it first-hand.

Honey tells Marty that she thinks someone was listening to the conversation she had with Datz. The next day Honey calls Harry to warn him that the FBI may show up on his doorstep as well. As they speak Harry is sweeping his office for bugs. He ends up finding one in the lamp on his desk and leaves it in place.

Harry has nothing to say

Sure enough, the same two FBI agents approach Harry in the parking lot of his office. He has little to share because he was simply in the room listening as Honey and Datz spoke. He certainly cannot reliably quote anything Chandler may have said.

The two “lads” as Harry calls them tell Harry he must come with them. Harry reluctantly joins them in their car insisting that they give him a ride back to the office. We learn that he spends hours at their office, and they did not give him a ride back. Harry calls Mo for a lift.

After Harry’s ordeal with the FBI, things do look up when he receives a call from Halley Lewis, Nick’s friend from the Navy. Halley recalls the name of the paper where Nick’s love interest worked.

Honey in the clear

Honey pays another visit to Terminal Island prison, this time to speak to her former client and Eme boss Raul Arraya. She asks Raul if his guys killed Datz and Raul asks why anyone would think they did.

Honey tells him about her bluff with Datz. Raul is impressed with her shrewdness. He says it was not him, but he will not rat on anyone. She then asks what the “chatter” on the block is saying. Raul talks about a supposed hit on Datz from the Russian Bratva.

Later that day, Honey hears that the shiv used to kill Datz was found in the cell of someone named Gregor, not anyone associated with Raul.

Seeking justice for Dr. Basu

Harry is determined to find Dr. Basu’s real killer, believing now that Jeffrey Herstadt was framed. Harry walks the sidewalk where Basu was stabbed. He talks to Dr. Shipman who was mentored by Manny Basu.

Harry asks Dr. Shipman about any possible stalkers or disgruntled patients Dr. Basu may have had. Shipman is unable to think of any, reiterating that Dr. Basu was loved by all. Harry also asks if Shipman was working the night of the murder. Shipman tells Harry that he left work early that day. Harry leaves his card with Shipman in case he thinks of anything helpful.

Gustafson tries to intimidate

As Harry returns to his Jeep, he see’s Detective Gustafson leaning on the vehicle. Harry promptly tells the detective to move. Gustafson speaks arrogantly to Bosch and tells him to stop interfering with his investigation. Harry basically says “make me”, not mincing words.

Harry also speaks to RHD Detective Joan Bennett about Gustafson. She tells Harry that Gustafson is angry about Bosch making him look bad. She says Gustafson is all about getting attention with the high-profile cases. Harry tells her that Gustafson can “get in line” like the rest of the people who have it out for Harry.

At night, Harry walks the crime scene again and talks to a young man walking his dog. The young man remembers telling Gustafson specifics about the murderer’s sweatshirt. So, why did Gustafson not include this information in the case file?

Sticking to the case

Clearly, Bosch has no intention of halting his investigation of Dr. Basu’s murder. Harry goes to Basu’s home and interviews his daughter. Basu’s widow seems very agitated and wants Harry to leave. She was told they let the murderer go free. Bosch assures her that Jeffrey did not kill her husband.

Bosch looks at Dr. Basu’s calendar and sees a note about meeting with the medical investigation board. Harry asks his daughter about the subject, but she had not heard anything.

The search for Paulina’s shooter

At Hollywood Station, Lt. Thorne introduces Detective Steve Morrison. Morrison tells the officers that the man suspected of shooting Paulina is a gang member named James Sharp. Sharp is already wanted for skipping out on his parole. RHD Detective Joan Bennett shows a picture of Nicole Davis, Sharp’s girlfriend, who was seen travelling with him.

The detectives ask the officers to be on the lookout for Sharp and to call for backup if they see him. They identify him as armed and dangerous.

Sounds similar

Reina and Maddie enjoy donuts at Trejo’s when they hear a call on the radio about an attempted rape in Thai Town. The description sounds like Preeda Saetang’s assailant. Reina tells Maddie to accept the request, but Officer Morgan claims it first.

Back at the station, Maddie asks Officer Morgan about the details. The victim fought the assailant causing him to drop his knife. The mask and smoke-covered smell of the assailant sounds just like the man who raped Preeda.

Preeda shows up at the station and calls Maddie to come outside. Maddie explains that she cannot talk about the investigation and refers Preeda to Detective Coleman. Preeda is discouraged because Coleman does not return her calls. Maddie explains that the force is focused on finding the person who shot a fellow officer. Preeda is bothered feeling like her case is taking a backseat.

Taking initiative

Maddie sees Detective Coleman at the station. Coleman is assigned to Preeda Saetang’s case. Maddie shows Coleman the app that Preeda has been using to monitor crime in the area. Coleman knows about the app. Maddie shows her some similar break-ins where someone cut a screen window.

Coleman tells Maddie that they have DNA from the rapist but there is no match for him in the system. Maddie concludes that this means the guy does not have a record of criminal behavior.

Coleman seems impressed with Maddie’s initiative and asks if she and Reina would be willing to help with a canvassing of the area. Maddie agrees wholeheartedly.

Reaching out to mom

Nicole Davis calls her mother from the hotel parking lot where she and James Sharp are hiding out. She wants to come home and be with her son, but Sharp will not let her go. Nicole asks her mom for cash to give Sharp so he can leave without her.

Suddenly, Sharp walks out of the hotel room. Nicole quickly ends the call.

Later, Detective Morrison speaks with Nicole’s mother. She admits that Nicole called her and asked for money. Morrison gives the mom a recording device for when Nicole calls back. They can set up a money drop and capture Sharp.

Detective Morrison talks to Lt. Cosgrove of SIS (Special Investigation Section) about the money drop and explains that Nicole needs to be kept safe from harm.

The drop

The drop is a coordinated effort with SIS (Special Investigation Section) and uniformed officers. Nicole is surveilled as she picks up the cash from underneath a picnic table at the Lemon Grove Recreation Center. Sharp pulls up beside her and she gives him the money. She wants him to leave without her, but he will not let her go. Nicole gets in the passenger seat.

The pursuit

The team attempts to surround Sharp’s car, but he pulls away. Cosgrove and the rest of the team pursue Sharp. Sharp crashes into a fence, but he and Nicole are still sitting up.

All the officers have their guns pointed at the car including Maddie and Reina. Cosgrove shouts for Sharp to show his hands. Sharp reaches for something and someone yells “gun”. Cosgrove and the other SIS team members fire at the vehicle shattering the back window.

Code 4 is called, and they approach the vehicle and check the trunk. Sharp and Nicole both appear to be dead.

Detective Morrison arrives and asks what happened. Cosgrove tells him that Sharp pulled his gun. Maddie hears the conversation and has a concerned look on her face. Is she unnerved by what just happened or might she have seen things differently than Cosgrove reports?

Vance concerns

Detectives Poydras and Franks from Simi Valley (where Vance lived) show up to Harry’s office building. They want to know what Harry was working on for Vance. Harry wants to know why Vance’s cause of death has not been confirmed. They threaten to have his PI license revoked. Harry thinks fast and tells them to calm down.

Harry changes the real story and tells them that he was trying to find one of Vance’s college roommates. He claims Vance wanted to apologize to the roommate for letting him take the fall for something back in college.

When the detectives ask who knew what he was investigating, Harry uses it as a chance to make Sloan look suspicious. Bosch says even though only Vance was supposed to know about the investigation, Sloan still came to his office asking about it. Harry suggests they check out Sloan instead.

In other Vance-related news, Philip Corwin goes to Ida Porter’s home to tell her that she is being let go. She will receive a generous severance package. Ida cannot believe she is being discarded after 40 years of service.

A familiar face

Harry looks through archives of photos from the paper that Nick’s girlfriend contributed to. Harry understands this could take a while. There are so many photos, and he does not know what he is looking for.

Then he sees Nick Santonello in one of the photos. Surely, the mystery woman was the photographer. Harry finds the name Gabriela Lida on the back of the photo.

Harry tracks down Gabriela. He learns that she and Nick were married by her friend when he snuck home. It was not a legal union, but they wanted to make a commitment. They shared a daughter whom they named Vibiana after Nick’s biological mother.

After Nick died, Gabriela did not tell his adoptive family about their daughter fearing they would try to take her. Harry wants to meet Vibiana and share information about Nick’s biological father.

Gabriela agrees to plan a time for Bosch to meet Vibiana and her son Gilberto. Yes, Vance has a granddaughter and great-grandson as heirs!

Gabriela and Harry part ways for the evening and get into their cars. Not far behind in his own vehicle is Sloan, watching every move.
